Why does Allah punish those who don't believe?
People are punished because of their rejection of God after the message has come to them. The following verse is enough for this question:
"Whoever goes right, then he goes right only for the benefit of his own self. And whoever goes astray, then he goes astray to his own loss. No one laden with burdens can bear another's burden. And We never punish until We have sent a Messenger (to give warning)."
(Quran, 17:15)

Very pretty recitation. I appreciate it on an aesthetic level though I see nothing to single it out from other monotheistic religions. I don't see the point. If god is so great then surely we non believers are to be forgiven. If not, then how is god better than your average person?

Here's the main thing (I'll try to keep it in simple terms): The Almighty God has non need of us. At the same time, he has created us for a purpose. He has informed us of that purpose. If we do not fulfill the purpose we have been created for, then we have fallen short in our life.

First of all, God has no gender. There is nothing like unto God, and he is not like his creation. The word "He" is used because of the limitations of the language. It is used out of dignity and high status...the word "it" would not convey the proper understanding of Allah.

I will end with the verse that follows the last verse I mentioned:
"No soul can believe, except by the will of Allah, and He will place doubt (or obscurity) on those who will not understand. "
(Qur'an, 10:100)
What I would bold in that verse is: "THOSE WHO WILL NOT UNDERSTAND."
I mean, it's day and night -- that's how clear it is.

At the same time, He has revealed the knowledge about the truth of this life through different Prophets throughout history. In the end, life is a test. There are so many things you can do, but which decisions are you going to make in life?
