You have to be a real loser to do what these people do in this vido, assume it, people will never know what Linux is and it will be always compared to Windows
Win7's interface looks a lot like KDE 4, but which one came first? Anyone know? And no I know KDE has been around for ages, but I'm talking specifically about KDE4 ( the one with the plasma system).
Fooling people that are rather non-techy and not particularly into recognizing Fat32/NTFS and windows' standard folder-layout is something else. I for one would've recognized this as not being Windows 7, had you shown this to me. Silly experiment, really.
@Fridelain Get a load of yourself will you? You sound like the odd guy out by pointing out ridiculous claims. "Well, technically, black is not a color! In fact, technically, color is not even color!"
@masterdave208 What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Linux is the kernel base of such Operating systems. And so Linux is an overall word for all these operating systems, like ubuntu, gentoo, kubuntu, suse, aso... i refer this to Linux.. and in other facts you are right.
@Fridelain you might as well stop calling your operating system windows/linux/mac, call them "windows xp sp2 build 2238" or "ubuntu 10.10.7863" or "mac os x 10.6.4"
this is just plain stupid, it's just a name, oh and stop calling yourself Fridelain and call yourself Fridelain [last name] instead ;p

Windows 7 actually uses KDE4 Code and Aero uses OpenGL. Well, that's at least that's what I heard, but I'm sure about Windows 7 using KDE code and they can legally do that because qt is under the LGPL, they just needed to make a deal with Nokia.

That's not a KDE problem. Media apps use libraries for their codecs and some distributions (like ubuntu) tend to ship without proprietary codecs. If you are online when trying to play a file, the codec will be downloaded automatically (just like Windows Media Player - just that wmp doesn't open a new window). If you want a media player that just works, use a libavcodec-based one like vlc or mplayer (on any OS you want - they even work on windows!).

id rather use a OS that works out of the box TBH , nothing wrong with linux if u know how to do it , but otherwise its no good for ANY avg user who dosnt have time to WASTE , many people in the world have lifes to get on with
not all people should identify the fucking K as KDE corporate identity... the could think of it as windows konquer or anything like it, are you idiot?
uneducated or just ignorants to something you know? the fact that they dont recognize something so trivial as the K standing for KDE doesent make them idiots, assuming they are idiots for ignoring such dull fact make you a retarded scum... and my other comment just was missing letters, but it is not a surprise you couldnt fill the spaces, really hard task for such a basic brain
This dull fact is the one which distinguishes KDE from other operating systems. Its a simple one which should almost be common knowledge at this stage... or course it takes some people a while to reach the standard of common knowledge.
Regardless... they should notice that no Windows logos are present in the OS.... this currently IS common knowledge!
Filling in missing letters should be your job, nobody elses... I can't believe you are trying to blame me for your bad english! xD
linux could take over the os market but there is still a few flaws. even though there are a lot of useful free apps that could even rival even professional ones for its os's distros there is still not really any good amount of them. apps like garage band and imovie (all others have a rivaling alternative) from apple and microsoft's huge amount of apps and also if there is no package synpnax version of what you wan to install you will have to do it in the terminal which could be a pain.
@XxToNy1105 but a window can't swim or catch fish either. Totally irrelevant!
I tried Kubuntu Jaunty, and despite liking all previous versions of KDE over Gnome since about 2000, KDE4 is not quite ready enough for me. Maybe 4.2 or later will have the v4 changes mature, complete, and usable enough for me. But until then Gnome will have to do.
@PaulTheHobo its most often, not a "choice" at all.
@DragonRomer, Wine runs some things faster. Drivers - good point, but lot better now+improving.
P.S. For the people that need XP/Vista. Partition half your drive. Install Windows first on half the drive. Then install Ubuntu, it has a very good bootloader that will allow you to choose.
Better yet, install Ubuntu, install the VirtualBox package from SUN and load XP/Vista/7 into a virtual machine. I like the free VirtualBox better than the VM Ware that we pay for at work.
I am a big fan of KDE as an occasional BSD user. (I've moved on the Ubuntu because I'm too busy. Call me a pussy whatever. Ubuntu gets it done for me.) However, the last really user friendly and popular OS I used-- I have to tip my hat to Microsoft for XP after a couple of years it was good, really good-- even with all the viruses. Too bad they let that code base get old and replaced it with an abomination. Ugh, Vista. I'll say it again; ugh, Vista. Vista made me try other things.
Yeah, people are stupid when it comes to computers.
Windows is so pervasive, as far as Joe I. Pod knows, Windows == Computer. If you show the average person a computer, they'll assume its running Windows. Heck, I showed a guy KDE 4.1 and he thought it was Vista!
Yes, come on go on.. For now, you've only got one point: "Computer games", as for drivers, I don't know what you're talking about, maybe you couldn't get your G19 LCD to work? heh, gamer lamer ftl
I tried loading up XP on my old 98 machine and it had some driver issues. -__-
I tried loading Win NT 4 on my laptop and almost no drivers exist. -__-
I tried reinstalling Vista on my laptop and I had to go out of my way to download my touchpad and wireless card drivers (well, Windows update started finding them eventually).
Windows only seems to have drivers for hardware within its lifespan window.
Personally, I've found some OpenGL-based emulators (specifically 1964) run better for me on WINE than on Windows. Lots of emulators have native linux builds.
If it's PC gaming, I really do suggest just using Windows, just like one would buy a 360 or PS3 for console gaming, etc. However for low end gaming, I've found emulation, WINE, and virtualization to be great, and for computing in general (software development, browsing, email, etc.) I don't need to subject myself to Windows.
A few hardware producers are seriously interested in developing drivers and other stuff for linux, because it has a different philosopy... With linux you don't have to replace hardware or buy a new pc every 2 years... Linux is penalized by monopolistic position of microsoft... It isn't linux fault if it isn't supported, but I believe in open source and its power, so I prefer to have full control over mi pc, not to be controlled by windows and microsoft... Sorry, I'm Italian :)
Your argument makes no sense. If you don't want to play the latest games theirs no reason to upgrade, and even then certainly not every 2 years with windows. If games were released on windows, which they aren't until someone patch's them or makes them compatible with Cadega or WINE 4 - 5 years down the line (yes, that's why your upgrade cycle is way behind) then you would have to upgrade to play them just the same, game performance is all hardware, not software.
I'm not taking about games, I noticed that Linux can make a 8-9 years old computer work, but not an old distro, I've installed on that pc Ubuntu 9.04 and it works... With windows is impossible! If you think a desktop environment it's too slow, just change it... Don't need to install 98, which now isn't supported... As for games, I totally agree with you, I don't agree with Microsoft policy, I think it forces you to buy new hardware to work properly much more often than using Linux...
Again, your argument makes no sense, you can install vista on 8 year old hardware too, and games aren't owned by Microsoft, they are individual companies, their is no Microsoft policy on games.
I think you are just hating on Microsoft for any reason you possibly can
Yes, I can install it on an old hardware, but it goes veeeeery slow... There are minimum requirements to install Microsoft OS's, and they are higher than Linux ones... No, I don't hate Microsoft, I've partitioned my hard disk and installed Fedora and Windows 7, much better than Vista, but Xp was the best...For games and Windows-programs, I use 7, for everyday activity, I use Linux :)
It isnt slow at all, You can change visual settings just like on Linux, disable visual themes and make it look like windows 95 and it will be perfectly fast.
Anyway I like Linux, I won't change my mind, since my hardware is supported and since it satisfies my needs, as well as you won't change Windows... I enjoyed this discussion, it's a pleasure to talk with a polite person :)
Wow, someone actually acknowledged an argument?... You know what? It was a pleasure to talk with you too. I am not used to people acknowledging points like that at all. *thumbs up*
Some of your points are valid. Not having games is no fault of Linux though, we can't help it if developers don't make games for us. Twp points where Windows will never win though. Customizability and default security. For the former I'm sure you'll agree. For the latter, let me cite just one example. WGA. Even if you lock your computer down tight as a BSD Windows will still phone home. MS can still see into your PC. There will always be a back door. You can keep your games. I've got my Wii.
I also want to make you aware that there are distros that will run on hardware that VIsta could never run on, Even in low graphics mode. Moon Os for example is very pleasing to the eye. Rivaling anything Vista could hand you. It will also run just fine on 128 MBs of RAM without sacrificing graphics. Even Compiz with Gnome uses far less than Vista with Aero enabled. Not trying to argue, just bringing up points that were missed in your conversation with futurama88.
One last point. Drivers. Used to be that you would have had a valid point. Not anymore. Linux supports more hardware out of the box than any other OS. On a clean installation on almost any hardware everything is working without having to search for, download, and install drivers. However, this is a moot point, as most who buy a computer don't install their OS. The OEM's take care of that in house. Though it is still very valid for those of us who build our own PC's.
There are only a couple of points I haven't already answered that you have brought up,
Firstly, that back-door thing smells of conspiracy, Without evidence I'm going to discard it as FUD.
WGA does not give Microsoft access to your PC, it merely executes itself in the same way a virus scanner does - you don't think every time you scan for viruses the company is actually looking at your computer do you? no. It is scanning, just for cracks instead of viruses.
Secondly, default security. I have still never seen any evidence that to suggest - were windows userbase as small as linux or mac's, that the default security would not be sufficient, HOWEVER being as that is not the case, Windows users do need to install their own software security. Big deal? This takes all of five minutes, and is usually free, see for example Avast anti-virus and Comodo firewall. Both are professional software that I would trust with my life, but they have a price tag of $0.
As for hardware security, ANYONE, no matter their OS, would be a fool to not run with AT LEAST a good router.
As for running on lower end hardware, again, you are confusing what I say, you are talking about vista in low graphics mode, I.E., Aero off. That is not what I was talking about. I was talking about vista with ALL visual styling and themes turned off, it looks identical to windows 95 and will run on just about any machine. If their comes a point in time (cont.)
If their comes a point in time where you have access to a computer that cannot run that adequately, I dare say it is from the EARLY 90's, and thus belongs in a museum. I have every confidence that vista would run on a 32mb RAM system from 1995 with those settings.
I will address drivers even though I think they are irrelevant, just as most hardware is plug and play on linux, it is plug and play on windows. HOWEVER, most people, myself included, do not trust the default drivers and would (cont)
and would rather download updated drivers from the hardware manufacturer's website, this tends to yield increased performance and stability, sometimes dramatically so.
I will take this up again after work tonight. Just wanted to let you know I started this because I believed by your earlier convo I could have a clean debate with you. And it wouldn't degrade to name-calling and FUD.

Foolish amarok, foolish system. KDE - unlegal gpl copy Aero & Aqua interfases! Using gpl & linux, you are become foolish loser. If you hate Windows, you will can use BSD and postBSD system(FreeBSD, Mac OS X and others). I'm experimentator, I'm recommend SkyOS for developers for home media centres
BSD License - good
gpl license - very bad.
I'm sorry, I'm bad speak on English, but I THINK, THINK.
"Foolish amarok" Amarok is an outstanding application. "KDE - unlegal gpl copy Aero & Aqua interfases! " You are an ignorant moron without a clue. "Using gpl & linux, you are become foolish loser" You have just confirmed again that you are an idiot. "If you hate Windows, you will can use BSD" KDE runs on BSD. "BSD License - good gpl license - very bad." BSD is good, GPL is better.
epic failure. Win7 looks nothing like KDE4. I don't know how KDE3.x looked, but when I tried KDE4, the start button justed screamed 'ribbon.' ZDNET probably just edited in the people that agreed with their hypothesis the most. My brother is 15, and he has a friend who is 10, and they can understand Vista.
Actually, Linux is REALL OS. It's a very good os too. And this video just shows that most users can't see the difference. KDE 4.2 on Linux is actually very stable, fast, and secure. Linux is 100X more secure than mac and windows.
This is definitely KDE 4.

I can name 2 Linux distros that are easier than windows 7 and Mac OS X
they are
QOS (linpus)
and Chrome OS (google)
their is also Ubuntu witch I say would Qualify
as being as user friendly as windows
(sorry for the repetitive "as")

theyll be shocked when they realise that KDE sucks after a fresh install because it wont even play mp3's or basic avi video lmao , windows 7 FTW
girlsdrinkfeck 2 years ago
That's not a KDE problem. Media apps use libraries for their codecs and some distributions (like ubuntu) tend to ship without proprietary codecs. If you are online when trying to play a file, the codec will be downloaded automatically (just like Windows Media Player - just that wmp doesn't open a new window). If you want a media player that just works, use a libavcodec-based one like vlc or mplayer (on any OS you want - they even work on windows!).
tangenz 2 years ago 2
Once you install all codecs you can do all that Windows can & more.
Windows 7 just comes with mp3 & WMA decoders only. Mp3 is royalty free while WMA & WMV is not.
With Linux you can all mp4 (In many flavors), mp3, OGG, AAC, WMA, WMV, Quicktime Mov, Real & more.
Of course, you can pay royalties to the microsoft & real versions. Unless you add the codecs yourself.

uneducated or just ignorants to something you know? the fact that they dont recognize something so trivial as the K standing for KDE doesent make them idiots, assuming they are idiots for ignoring such dull fact make you a retarded scum... and my other comment just was missing letters, but it is not a surprise you couldnt fill the spaces, really hard task for such a basic brain
Dreadfultime 2 years ago

Drivers - good point, but lot better now+improving.
jgbreezer 2 years ago
I don't want KDE to copy windows. I want KDE to be KDE, and KDE4 is a pain in the ass.
JuddMan03 2 years ago
I like the free VirtualBox better than the VM Ware that we pay for at work.
zerobeholder 2 years ago 2
I am a big fan of KDE as an occasional BSD user. (I've moved on the Ubuntu because I'm too busy. Call me a pussy whatever. Ubuntu gets it done for me.) However, the last really user friendly and popular OS I used-- I have to tip my hat to Microsoft for XP after a couple of years it was good, really good-- even with all the viruses. Too bad they let that code base get old and replaced it with an abomination. Ugh, Vista. I'll say it again; ugh, Vista. Vista made me try other things.
zerobeholder 2 years ago 2
Yeah, people are stupid when it comes to computers.
Windows is so pervasive, as far as Joe I. Pod knows, Windows == Computer. If you show the average person a computer, they'll assume its running Windows. Heck, I showed a guy KDE 4.1 and he thought it was Vista!

Drivers. Linux drivers are far less mature if not completely non existant for alot of hardware.

Linux has worked every time I fired it up 100%.
Games on linux is a fair argument, to an extent.
jvdthwip 2 years ago
Personally, I've found some OpenGL-based emulators (specifically 1964) run better for me on WINE than on Windows. Lots of emulators have native linux builds.
If it's PC gaming, I really do suggest just using Windows, just like one would buy a 360 or PS3 for console gaming, etc. However for low end gaming, I've found emulation, WINE, and virtualization to be great, and for computing in general (software development, browsing, email, etc.) I don't need to subject myself to Windows.
jvdthwip 2 years ago
A few hardware producers are seriously interested in developing drivers and other stuff for linux, because it has a different philosopy... With linux you don't have to replace hardware or buy a new pc every 2 years... Linux is penalized by monopolistic position of microsoft... It isn't linux fault if it isn't supported, but I believe in open source and its power, so I prefer to have full control over mi pc, not to be controlled by windows and microsoft... Sorry, I'm Italian :)
futurama88 2 years ago
Your argument makes no sense. If you don't want to play the latest games theirs no reason to upgrade, and even then certainly not every 2 years with windows. If games were released on windows, which they aren't until someone patch's them or makes them compatible with Cadega or WINE 4 - 5 years down the line (yes, that's why your upgrade cycle is way behind) then you would have to upgrade to play them just the same, game performance is all hardware, not software.
DragonRomer 2 years ago
I'm not taking about games, I noticed that Linux can make a 8-9 years old computer work, but not an old distro, I've installed on that pc Ubuntu 9.04 and it works... With windows is impossible! If you think a desktop environment it's too slow, just change it... Don't need to install 98, which now isn't supported... As for games, I totally agree with you, I don't agree with Microsoft policy, I think it forces you to buy new hardware to work properly much more often than using Linux...
futurama88 2 years ago
Again, your argument makes no sense, you can install vista on 8 year old hardware too, and games aren't owned by Microsoft, they are individual companies, their is no Microsoft policy on games.
I think you are just hating on Microsoft for any reason you possibly can
DragonRomer 2 years ago
Yes, I can install it on an old hardware, but it goes veeeeery slow... There are minimum requirements to install Microsoft OS's, and they are higher than Linux ones... No, I don't hate Microsoft, I've partitioned my hard disk and installed Fedora and Windows 7, much better than Vista, but Xp was the best...For games and Windows-programs, I use 7, for everyday activity, I use Linux :)
futurama88 2 years ago
It isnt slow at all, You can change visual settings just like on Linux, disable visual themes and make it look like windows 95 and it will be perfectly fast.
DragonRomer 2 years ago
I lost, you're right! :)
Anyway I like Linux, I won't change my mind, since my hardware is supported and since it satisfies my needs, as well as you won't change Windows... I enjoyed this discussion, it's a pleasure to talk with a polite person :)
futurama88 2 years ago 3
Wow, someone actually acknowledged an argument?... You know what? It was a pleasure to talk with you too. I am not used to people acknowledging points like that at all. *thumbs up*
DragonRomer 2 years ago 2
Thank you! :) *thumbs up*
futurama88 2 years ago 2
Some of your points are valid. Not having games is no fault of Linux though, we can't help it if developers don't make games for us. Twp points where Windows will never win though. Customizability and default security. For the former I'm sure you'll agree. For the latter, let me cite just one example. WGA. Even if you lock your computer down tight as a BSD Windows will still phone home. MS can still see into your PC. There will always be a back door. You can keep your games. I've got my Wii.
GaelachWolf 2 years ago
I also want to make you aware that there are distros that will run on hardware that VIsta could never run on, Even in low graphics mode. Moon Os for example is very pleasing to the eye. Rivaling anything Vista could hand you. It will also run just fine on 128 MBs of RAM without sacrificing graphics. Even Compiz with Gnome uses far less than Vista with Aero enabled. Not trying to argue, just bringing up points that were missed in your conversation with futurama88.
GaelachWolf 2 years ago
One last point. Drivers. Used to be that you would have had a valid point. Not anymore. Linux supports more hardware out of the box than any other OS. On a clean installation on almost any hardware everything is working without having to search for, download, and install drivers. However, this is a moot point, as most who buy a computer don't install their OS. The OEM's take care of that in house. Though it is still very valid for those of us who build our own PC's.
GaelachWolf 2 years ago 2
There are only a couple of points I haven't already answered that you have brought up,
Firstly, that back-door thing smells of conspiracy, Without evidence I'm going to discard it as FUD.
WGA does not give Microsoft access to your PC, it merely executes itself in the same way a virus scanner does - you don't think every time you scan for viruses the company is actually looking at your computer do you? no. It is scanning, just for cracks instead of viruses.
DragonRomer 2 years ago
Secondly, default security. I have still never seen any evidence that to suggest - were windows userbase as small as linux or mac's, that the default security would not be sufficient, HOWEVER being as that is not the case, Windows users do need to install their own software security. Big deal? This takes all of five minutes, and is usually free, see for example Avast anti-virus and Comodo firewall. Both are professional software that I would trust with my life, but they have a price tag of $0.
DragonRomer 2 years ago
As for hardware security, ANYONE, no matter their OS, would be a fool to not run with AT LEAST a good router.
As for running on lower end hardware, again, you are confusing what I say, you are talking about vista in low graphics mode, I.E., Aero off. That is not what I was talking about. I was talking about vista with ALL visual styling and themes turned off, it looks identical to windows 95 and will run on just about any machine. If their comes a point in time (cont.)
DragonRomer 2 years ago
If their comes a point in time where you have access to a computer that cannot run that adequately, I dare say it is from the EARLY 90's, and thus belongs in a museum. I have every confidence that vista would run on a 32mb RAM system from 1995 with those settings.
I will address drivers even though I think they are irrelevant, just as most hardware is plug and play on linux, it is plug and play on windows. HOWEVER, most people, myself included, do not trust the default drivers and would (cont)
DragonRomer 2 years ago
and would rather download updated drivers from the hardware manufacturer's website, this tends to yield increased performance and stability, sometimes dramatically so.
DragonRomer 2 years ago
Also, console games, especially on the Wii, are the reason people think gaming is immature. Computer games are for deeper.
DragonRomer 2 years ago
I will take this up again after work tonight. Just wanted to let you know I started this because I believed by your earlier convo I could have a clean debate with you. And it wouldn't degrade to name-calling and FUD.
