The sleep mode that saves from ram to hard disk can also be from a Terminal with "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0" you still go in sleep mode but nothing is saved to the disk.

The sleep thing is because of "safe sleep" which saves the contents of memory to the hard disk before fully sleeping. This means that even if your battery totally dies while the computer is in sleep, you won't lose any data because it's been saved. The downside is that it takes a few seconds to copy the data.

the sleep thing has been a common thing since they switched to intel.

All my power pc macs would instantly go to sleep upon me shutting the lid. These intels just stay on until they feel necessary. Not TOO big of a deal I guess, but still annoying.
