I just got wires taken of today' n i can barely open my mouth like barely fit one finger in between' but hey "how long will it take before i can really open my mouth the way it was *before* i broke it?"

  • thank you aaron, i am 17 and had this surgery 6 days ago as well as wisdom teeth out. it has been really helpful hearing your thoughts and i admire your positive attitude throughout the whole thing!

  • I had a similar Surgery :D Either side of my lower jaw was split and then they slid the lower jaw so that they could get rid of the awful over bite :D Took me 1 week to recover but to be honest the first 3 days was a pain in the ass... But hey... The outcome was definitely rewarding and I now have a much stronger jaw :D!

  • you are looking great from the surgey

  • Hi Aaron, How you doin? 4 weeks post surgery.. I've healed pretty well except for a small bump in my lower left jaw. My surgeon said it should reduce in the next few weeks.. have you noticed anything like that in your lower jaw? Also Im starting to get into somemore solid foods, as long as I cut them up. However I have noticed when I open my mouth wider, I get a bit of a click in the jaw. I dont know what thats from.. again have you experienced anything similar?

  • @MrCheerfulGuy : Hey, glad to hear its healing well. I never had a small bump in my lower jaw but I did have a click for the first three months or so. It just went away recently. I was worried about the click as well but my surgeon said it does happen from time to time and it should go away...which it did.

  • How was your experience with Dr. Bloomquist? I'm considering having my surgery done by him as I've heard he's reputable and offers discounted rates. Do you live in Seattle or did you fly there for the surgery? If you don't live there, did you have to fly back for check-ups? I have to have both jaws operated on for my overbite/lip incompetence. How much was one jaw with Dr. Bloomquist?

  • @09jerica : I would highly recommend Dale Bloomquist. He was very reasonable in price and did an amazing job. I had no pain and I credit his expertise to that. I live up here in WA so it was local. I only had three checkups with him..I have one more scheduled once my braces are removed. My lower jaw surgery was $7400...my freind had upper and lower done from Dr. Feldman (Bloomquists partner) for $15,000...a good price for the surgery and that includes hospital stay as well. Good luck!

  • Hi Aaron,

    your videos are awesome! .

I have a question i'm due for surgery in 3 weeks and they are moving my lower jaw forward about 6mm ... so its very a like. However they also recommended that I cut my chin and move it forward too to enhance my profile.

You had your jaw widened did that include cutting your chin? If so have you regained feeling in your chin yet? one guy has not regained feeling in their chin for over a year now. Also did they have to take your wisdoms out?

  • @MrCheerfulGuy : Hey thanks for the compliment. I'm glad they are helpful. I had my wisdom teeth pulled before I got my braces. I didn't have a chin augmentation but I would do it if I were you. You only want to have this surgery done once so get it all done at the same time. I am still missing feeling in my lower right side of my face. It can take a while for the feeling to return and in some cases, it never fully recovers. I am confident it will come back over time though.

  • @aaronmd50 Hi Aaron,

9 days before my surgery so i'm no doubt feeling the same as you were feeling pre op.. I still do have an option to pull out.

What are your thoughts post surgery? Are you glad you've had it done? I'm in the same boat as you .. I have a slight over bite but never have problem with chewing food.

My surgery includes: Lower jaw advancement about 6mm and chin augmentation as an option. I might not go through with the chin at this point because thats purely cosmetics.

  • @MrCheerfulGuy : It depends how and why you want the surgery. I am completely happy with my decision to get the surgery and would have regretted not getting the surgery. I had a 6mm overbite as well and the difference in my bite is amazing. If you wanted to get the surgery then do it. Don't let the fear of Post Op stop you from doing what you wanted to do. It was worth every penny as far as im concerned and my smile is great. Best of luck...don't back out!

  • @aaronmd50 Hi Aaron, your replies have been most helpful. You have to post another video or picture of you without the swelling. Did they cut your chin? Did you lose sensation in your chin post surgery?

Okay one last concern about the titanium plates. The doctors leave these in there or do you take them out after a while? I'm not sure how I feel about having metal in my body thats all .. thanks for the encouragement so far, you've been awesome

  • @MrCheerfulGuy I will try to get a video up in the next week or two now that I'm healed up. They did cut my chin but it was to narrow my lower bite, they didn't do a chin augmentation. I didn't loose feeling in my chin, only my lip lost feeling. I wouldn't worry about the plates, they are small and medically proven to be safe. I have never even noticed they are in there. They will leave them in as there is no reason to remove them. Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

  • @aaronmd50 Thanks for the vote of confidence and all your replies so far. Surgery in less than 1 week! okay a technical question which you may or may not know. How much can a nerve be stretched before it's actually damaged? I mean 6mm doesnt seem much there are other people that have had it streched longer than that. I am meeting with my surgeon again next week before surgery, however I thought you may know the answer. At this point I think I'm going forward rather than backing out :)

  • @MrCheerfulGuy : Glad to hear your going through with it...you will be glad you did. The nerve doesn't get stretched, they will cut the bone instead and the nerve will also be cut. It will grow back in time but you will have some numbness in the meantime. Its actually kinda strange being numb for so long...im starting to get used to it. The feeling almost always comes back though.

  • @aaronmd50 Hi Aaron how you doin? It's been about 4 days after my surgery and all is going well. I wanna thank you personally for your videos and replies. You've helped me the most as your surgery is almost identical to mine. I watched your videos before and after surgery to calm myself. That and alot of postive thinking. I'm definitely feel tingling in my lower right lip and chin. The other side is fine as he was able to by pass the nerve. Your right about the pain, minimal pain just swelling.

  • @MrCheerfulGuy : Hey, I'm glad to hear that the surgery went so well. You will have nothing but easier days from here on out. As you get to open your mouth wider, its much easier to deal with. I appreciate the nice comments. I was pleasantly surprised with how easy the surgery was and was glad to hear you experienced the same. My lower lip is still tingly so that can stay around a while. Best of luck healing up!

  • @aaronmd50 Hi Aaron. Just a couple questions about Post Op.. how long did it take for the swelling to go totally down. Your day 6 video looked pretty good and I'm sitting at around the same.. however I wanna know if I'm okay to pop into work in a few days. Also how long was it until you could chew into some steak and meat? I've been pretty much vegetarian for a week now and its killing me..

  • @MrCheerfulGuy : The swelling will go down after a few weeks but there will be residual swelling for a few months. I could still feel a bit of swelling for about 2 1/2 months (nothing major, just a bit). Your surgeon should be able to clear you for work as long as there is no physical labor (anything that could damage the surgery area or cause bleeding from the incisions in your mouth). As far as chewing hard foods, It took me about a month to eat steak. The muscles in your mouth have to heal.

  • @MrCheerfulGuy Hey would you say the surgery was worth it ? And how long did you have braces on after the surgery ?

  • Are the screws and plates around your jaw permanent? I was told I either needed surgery or to have my front teeth pushed back into a vertical position, and the surgery sounds better, especially since I've kinda got a hidden chin. I want to enlist though, and I'm afraid that plates and screws in my face will ruin any chance of joining the Marines. Especially if I don't make it to college.

  • @Gyrene0351 The screws and plates are permanent...and don't worry about enlisting as the bone grows back within a couple of months..it just makes more sense to leave the plates and screws in instead of a second surgical procedure to remove them. If you want to get the surgery then I say go for it. Although i didn't do this for cosmetic reasons, my bite is noticeably better. Best of luck!

  • thats cool, dude. i'd just like to see a vid of you without swelling and then when everything is all said and done. thanks again for posting your vids. like i said, i will be having my upper and lower done this summer and you are the most helpful person on youtube! (a lot of people who have similar surgeries have under bites and that is just not the case) thanks again

  • @evanmcnichols: Hey, thanks for the compliment. Glad I could help. I know I used the video's here to help me get through it and that's why I decided to make my own series. Its good to know they are helping someone. I wish you the best and would love to hear how your surgery goes so feel free to let me know how its going! If its anything like mine, it will be easy and over before you know it. Good luck!
