OH they bark. The scream isn't really a distress signal thing, I think its meant to get your attention but when they are afraid they bark LOUD.

My shiba *almost* never barks.. She will do the scream when she is having to get a bath or has to get put in her crate when she thinks people are awake.. She will whimper when she wants something esp. to bury a bone somewhere in the house! (under the pillows or behind the toilet are usual places lol)

@iGangster I hardly ever bathe her.. She needed it more a few months ago when she was not potty trained.. She would pee while she was sleeping and be laying in it.. Now she doesn't do that and so she hasn't had one for a while.. Only when she's really dirty or for a super special occassion..

@DjNeo7744 That's actually incorrect. I happen to have two Shiba Inu's and they bark as well as howl and scream. Some Shibas just bark less than others.

@hilarys01 Dogs can bark, they can also howl. Dogs like shiba inu's who are closer to the wolf than say for example a sheltie will howl alot more, but in this case, they will just squeel/bark/whine using their howling voice ;D

@hilarys01 i have a shiba and to answer the question i would say its 50/50. my shiba tends to do that "screaming" thing when he gets all worked up or wants something badly.. but if its something out of a window like a person it will start out as a "scream" then go to a bark. but if someone comes into the house its a full on bark, dont be mistaken they have a very very loud bark. you would be surprised! i hope this helps!

thanks. i have one now and she tends to do more of a bark then the scream, just when something is out of the ordinary she will bark at it and yes it is very loud!!

@hilarys01 yes they do bark, well barely, atleast my shiba doesnt bark hardly, she howls, its not bad howling she howls at everyone EVEN ME lol and no when they scream (or yelp) something CAN be wrong, but most of the time not really.. mine screams at the vet (cuz they VERY independent) they are definetley a one family pet so letting someone else hold my dog.. she'd be screaming to death and she gets back to me shes like wagging her tail LOL
