Such grace and ease of movement; the front salto was a very difficult skill for the time, but its the little touches of balletic beauty which make this so aesthetically pleasing; the turn at 1:18-1:20 is really gorgeous. I always feel so sad when I think about Yelena:( at least she left behind a legacy of beautiful gymnastics for us to enjoy.
@FLACSC74 Nadia was a clearly a better gymnast than Mukhina all the way around. Nadia had better form, consistency and better landings. I enjoyed Mukhina when she competed and I liked her a lot. I was saddened beyond belief when she had her tragic accident. but she was no where near 10X better than Nadia. Mukhina was worked inappropriately and was sloppy at the 1979 Euros. She did not appear happy. I felt sorry for her when I watched her then and afterward she had her tragic accident.
Your right about Comaneci being the better gymnast technically....BUT more 'daring' gymnasts like Mukhina and Shaposh did tend to make Nadias routines SOMETIMES look a bit boring...but thats just my opinion!
@desglacons Thats because she (Mukhina) had broken her leg and her coach made her go back to the gym before she was ready and fully healed. She said she walked crooked and it was painful so I don't think I would be very happy either.
@HailieNichole1995 That is sad to hear. I remember watching this when it happened and wondered if something was wrong. Now you have explained it. A further sad note to Mukhina's storied life. Thanks for the info!
Yes Elena won it. Nadia did permorm on the beam in the 77 Euros EF and achieved a perfect 10, however the Romanians were instructed to walk out of the competition in protest at the scoring in the vault (where Nadia was placed 2nd). Therefore Nadia was unable to collect her gold medal which went to Elena. In the 1979 Europeans Nadia was 3rd on the beam after a couple of severe wobbles in the EF.
Such a lovely fluid beam exercise. When you watch the minor gymnasts of the time you realise how good the top ones were.

Are you sure she won this event in EC 1977? Because Comaneci is known for being BB european champion three times in a row: 75-77-79.

Elena was such a beautifully controlled and graceful gymnast, and to have such a tragic life is heartbreaking. Rest in Peace, Elena.
