I kind of remember this, Cote's skate hit the ref's face cutting his face up, and I wouldn't blame the ref for wanting to fight him. One game back in the early 90's when I was playing junior pro, the ref gets body checked and then the ref attempts to trip the same player with his foot then starts punching the player and the player fought back, it was a strange but epic fight.

This is why fighting in hockey should go through reform. You can tell without refs guarding, some players are intent on injuring other players. It's all fine if they want to pound each other to a pulp if they're still standing and taking it but when a guy is down and you have someone wailing at them, it's just barbaric and full on assault/battery.
