@dwsanda09 Have you read Jessop's new book, "Triumph?" She explains what went wrong in the Texas raid. She also acknowledges the children being returned. I don't think there was any prank involved when the call was made to police - too many people who have escaped the FLDS can corroborate Jessop's stories of abuse. When people who are all related through friendship and marriage can give you the same version of events after escaping or being kicked out, then there's clearly a problem.

I grew up in a nearby LDS community. My grandma moved there when she was 14 to work and attend Normal School. My grandfather was the Bishop's son. Some of my friends mothers seemed to be married in Polygamy. About girls dysfunctional families in town I wouldn't know because she wouldn't have let me hang out with them. Over 1/3 of the sexual abusers in Utah are fundamentalist Mormons despite the fact that they represent about 5% of the population of Utah. That is statistically significant.

The wage gap is a lie. There has been no studies as of yet that have shown conclusively that women are paid less. And anyway why should they be paid the same? Women go off and have children/take maternity leave and get paid for not doing any work. Men don't do that, they are more reliable, for at any moment a woman may fall pregnant. You can't expect the company to pay two people for the same job. Women also don't demand pay increases like men do. It's their own fault.

@dwsanda09 Have you read Jessop's new book, "Triumph?" She explains what went wrong in the Texas raid. She also acknowledges the children being returned. I don't think there was any prank involved when the call was made to police - too many people who have escaped the FLDS can corroborate Jessop's stories of abuse. When people who are all related through friendship and marriage can give you the same version of events after escaping or being kicked out, then there's clearly a problem.

The issue is forced marriage and denial of education. Until 1997 the usual monogamist marriage age was 16--a judge had to make the final decision, but if a couple seemed intent he generally agreed. This is the same pattern usual in rural Texas. The only thing unique about Mormon polygamy is arranged marriage and the lack of courtship in the most isolated groups. I'm not a particularly religious Mormon, grew up in Southrn Utah. Hamlets lack public secondary education facilities/related jobs.

I live near the BC FLDS community. They're in hiding now, sending only the oldest and ugliest out to shop. But when I still saw the little girls, my heart was torn by the expression on their faces. These girls never have a chance, they don't receive a standard education. And the boys are just discarded, also without education.
Forced polygamy is right there with bloodletting, slavery, FGM, and other trappings of our barbaric past. We are all equal, no one is a 'religious authority' :(

I even read that the older women are told to go up high on mountains/hills and wait to be "taken up" to the sky, sort of like "Scotty, beam me up." It's pretty pathetic and sad that these poor brain-washed older women actually believe it. The "husbands" are too busy pronging 13-14 year-olds to care.

Everyone has the right to raise their own children in their own beliefs. Why would they do otherwise? And from what I see these people take great care in what they do, it's a beautiful community they built with their own hands. Maybe the reason you don't see a lot of people leaving is because they are happy there and it's their home.
