I would have to say that all 3 of these musicians are great!. There's not 1 that tries to steal the show from the others. They compliment each other in their work. When you read the credits on the cd case you see ZZ Top, not just single names doing all the work. Now thats a true team. Corporate America should pay ZZ Top to come talk to them. Thak about it.
Best less than 2:30 rocker ever done. Cool lyrics, great vocals by Dusty Hill, who unfortunetly doesn't get enough chances to sing lead with Billy, awesome solo, this is a power trio doin' it's thang right here!
I'm gonna continue the praise of Dusty's bass playing;Heard it on the X is a rockin song from this fine southern rock band and that's what they are,Texas is a southern state.ZZTop has made some of the best songs ever and they deserve all the gratitude given to em and more.
Oh My God. Dusty Hill's bass sound is unbelievable. I mean, everyone knows Billy Gibbons is great, but the bass..... Whatta tone! No wonder they sound so huge.... its a 3-piece band that sounds like a 6 piece.
what happened to Frank Beard? He was on his way to being an otherworldly drummer but then came Eliminator (a great album) with mostly a drum track driving
everything I think maybe we should find out what they did with the real Frank Beard
zz top was cool in the 70´s, they were great in the 80´s, they were awesome everytime. even today. coolest bluesrock/pop/tex-mex/god-knows-what-band ever!
holy shit, this song just rips, frank beard just plays the shit out of this, what a super band, i first heard them with eliminator, than i got there older stuff, wow, what a difference, they really are a great band
@sitro74 I am thinking you are talking about the part of the Metallica "Cliff Em All" tape where they are naming their influences and favorites and at the very end Cliff with a big cheesy smile nods his head and says "ZZ TOP!"..you are right and so was Cliff like you said. Cliff Burton was brilliant!
Most southern people in the US like ZZTop. Funny thing I know is that people up in northern areas do not really like ZZTop that much, and that's what I heard about.
@tshk5271221 you heard wrong, we love zz top in the north too, best live band I've ever seen, one of the few bands you cant really appreciate until you see them live, their studio works does not do the justice
DUDE, I CAN'T EVEN DRIVE MY CAR WITHOUT TURNING ON ZZTOP SONGS. SINCE ZZTOP WAS INFLUENCED BY HISPANIC CULTURE, NORTHERN PEOPLE WON'T LIKE ZZTOP, AND THAT'S WHAT I HEARD FROM MY FRIEND. IF NOT TRUE, THAT'S GOOD.
i was at my guitarplayers house the other night, and he threw this show in the dvd player/giant plasma screen, and WOW! whatta performance! i promptly ordered
"double down live" on dvd.cannot wait till it arrives in the mail! i saw your post(thank you) before i saw it at my buds house, and i wondered if it was available on dvd.
Dusty, Billy, and Frank, could have fronted their own 'Kick Ass" band if they wanted to and be very successful at it. What makes ZZ special is that each member is on equal footing with the others. How else could they have managed to KICK ASS for sooo long? Long live the TOP!!
@mynewpastime yeah! he´s one of the coolest looking drummer in the world, and he and the band are idols for a hole generation. what a pity that much to less people are listening such a music today... BLUES-ROCK FOREVER !!!
More Dr. B trivia. Doc Brinkley as he was known specialized in restoring male virility by implanting goat glands in his patients. He also dabbled in politics and actually won the office of governor of Kansas in the late twenties/early thirties although the two major parties conspired to deny him his rightfully won victory. He also owned a flamethrower AM radio station in Milford, Kansas that reached all or parts of thirty states. The government conspired to take that from him also.
All I know for sure is that Z.Z. Top always played well live. I don't recall them ever rendering a bad show. I've never been disappointed in their live sets---I've had my socks knocked off by their accuracy and awesome live feel, but never been let down! Thanks for the great post!
@HonkIfYouLoveHonking no, you're correct....Billy and Dusty most certainly DID trade off on the verses of the song.Billy kicks it off with "Do you remember, back in 1966", Dusty on "Country Jesus, Hillbilly blues, that's where I got my licks", and so on...duets on the "anywhere, y'all, ev'rywhere, y'all", then Billy on the "I heard it, I heard it, I heard it on the X". Dusty just did the lion's share on this outing is all.....
@generationx1966 I've yet to see them live, though they still play out, Blue Oyster Cult is a band that rarely records but do tour still and are amazing live. I'm glad they are still a ROCK band! haha
If you like ZZ's "X" check our a guy who calls himself KINGSBLADEUSA. His version blew me away. And he seems like a cool guy as he'll personally respond to posts.
He's got other great covers of Ted Nugent, the Offspring, Johnny Cash, Metallica and more.
Yet another ZZ song where Beard's syncopation really gives the music it's bad-ass ZZ-Top sound. That man's drumming is so subtle...he's kinda like a pocket drummer who figured out how to lay down the heavy to rock and roll. Another great example of his style spelling out ZZ's sound is the song "Just Got Paid Today".
1. What the hell does Gibbons say at the beginning of this song? I hear him say it before every performance, but I can hardly figure out a single word of it!
2. Why does Dusty sing the entire thing here? It's clearly Gibbons singing parts of the verses on the original. It sounds like Gibbons's voice on the studio version of "Dust My Broom" too, but Dusty always takes over that one live as well...
@lookingforfun70 I mean, it's cool that Dusty gets a bit more spotlight during live performances than he does in the studio...it just seems kinda random how they switch up the lead vocalist for certain songs every now and then.
