“If Christ himself came to Geneva, he would be crucified. For Geneva is not a place of Christian liberty. It is ruled by a new pope, but one who burns men alive, while the pope at Rome at least strangles them first.” 1554
(Yup, when the Catholics killed Tyndale, they strangled him first. Poor Servetus took a full 30 minutes to be slowly roasted to death. All to God's glory, mind you, as he had predestined .. )
How about reading the deeply spiritual and TRULY Christian Sebastian Castellio ,, His, and the many other expressions of horror at what Calvin did, completely put the lie to your argument that everybody was killing each other in those days so it was fine for Calvin. Listen to Castellio:
She said that heresy and blasphemy were regularly punished by deat!?? That is a total disgusting lie !! ,, the Reformation was BUILT on the foundation that a church had no right to put heretics to death (which is what the Catholics were doing). And the severest punishment on the statute books for heresy in Geneva at that time was,,,, expulsion. Check it out. Shame on her. Bearing false witness. Calvin wanted Servetus dead and he trumped up charges to commit an unspeakable murder
Wow, did she actually just say that Servetus did not believe Jesus was divine?? And she is a "doctor"?? Pathetic, pathetic. Servetus was rock solid on Jesus' divinity! What laziness - it takes just a couple of minutes to google things like this these days.
@rslnep Amen. Also, if Calvin and his friend really believed Rome was the 'anti-chris't, then why were they sending the 'anti-christ' evidence to accuse anyone?
The real question for a Christian SHOULD be..did Calvin do what Christ would have done or what Christ told him to do?To quote author Greg Deuble "Jesus did not belong to the authority structures,whether civil or religious.Much less did he commit violence against any fellow human,whether friend or enemy.And the scripture is clear that "no murderer has eternal life abiding in him"(1 John 3:15)."
Catholic/Protestant="spirit of antichrist" [1Jn 3-4]. Early Christians lived and "prospered" in even worst pagan Roman times than anyone else in history, yet were not reduced to killing people to defend themselves nor their religious beliefs!

John 16:2
"... but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God."

Servetus didnt deny the deity of Christ. He was a modalist. Dr Karin Maag should check her facts before she gives lectures.

@echoesintoeternity
You are correct, Servetus did not deny the deity of Christ.
A quote from Servetus:
"I shall admit these three things: first, this man is JESUS CHRIST; second, he is the Son of God; third, he is God."

So... let's no condemn Huss's execution either, because we cannot apply 21st century mindset to the past.
