ironically the UK is rather divided. in Wales, we are lucky to be out of the way in the west, and dont really have much to do with the rest of the UK. we have our own TV stations & Radio Stations in Welsh, and are very close to our only celtic relatives in the world, the irish, just over the sea.

The Queen is Head of State in Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and other places but they do not belong to us nor are they administered by us any more.
She's Head of State by virtue of the Treaty of Westminster, which has created separate crowns for those countries -- e.g. in Australia she is referred to as the Queen of Australia first, then the other Realms and Territories.
Don't blame Americans in general or Katie Couric in particular for this gaffe. It was the writers who did the teleprompter. They were the true idiots. Any educated American knows that the UK is one nation.
