0:49 "we're lethargas" lethargic being a very deep state of consciousness. If anything he would be on some sleeping pills not psychedelic like LSD. I could see how people would think that tho given the trippy reverb from the lethargas' voices and their droopy mellow quality.
dont need to be on drugs to regress into doldrums. apathy, inertia and lethargic attitude is a product of overconsuming on internet and porn. erases your life. funny that i'm conscious of that and still just stare at youtube anyway. Life destroying. And humans never emotionally prepared themselves for the internet. So my generation is hooked and mostly mentally corroded.
WHAT IS THE REAL NAME OF THESE CARTOON? I SAW IT ON PRESCHOOL AND WANTED TO SEE IT AGAIN REALLY BAD. PLEASE SEND THE ANSWER TO matthew.neary@gmail.com
They are saying he is in the doldrums. From The Phantom Tollbooth. Its a trippy book about a young boy who obviously smokes a ton of marijuana and gets bad grades because he cant handle it and he gets this tollbooth in the mail and he is so fucked up on acid and he goes on a wonderful trip. This is that story.
If you're gonna make a an anti drug cartoon at least makesure that the can understand what the characters are saying. Seriously I could barley understand what they were saying.
im not sure how this relates to drugs. the doldrums is a band around the equator that has virtually no wind. it would trap sailboats and keep them stuck there with no means of escape. The phrase to be in the doldrums relates to being stuck or in a slump. milo is merely being trapped by the creeping effects of laziness and boredom.
poor kid seems like he is on acid or a kind of hallucinogenic. Good thing he went to sleep, but maybe not!!!!!! This cartoon has a lot of obvious symbolism.
phantom of the toll booth was one of my favorite movies when i was a little kid, This movie had more to do with every day dope-age than drug related behavior.
Someone who had done drugs before must have been involved in making this, maybe even made the whole thing... Sidenote: that kid looks and seems extremely gay.
I'm sad... they took down the videos of however posted this whole movie... glad your movie's still on here... maybe you could post the rest if you have it... I'd really appreciate it.
Find me some proof of Chuck Jones as a big drug user. I'd like to see that. Otherwise, stop dumping on great artists with this inexplicable "he was on drugs" nonsense... also, this was made in 1967 in Hollywood... for the people who were on drugs at this time, it was actually much different than it is today. I know this is youtube, but it's just offensive to say things like this if you really don't know the facts.
@totoro1591 Dude, come on now! If taken out of context, this kid is baked. I've read the book, seen the cartoon, and posted this video. This particular scene would be quite nice on drugs. I really don't think that drugs were what was intended for this clip, but out of context it really makes one wonder. You guys really stand up for your tollbooth!
somebody has to... I make it habit to judge things within context... I find "out of context" can lead to a lot of misunderstanding and strife, but that may be beyond the scope of this particular situation, nevertheless, I want the truth out there so people don't get the wrong idea. This happens to be my third favorite movie of all time, and I've been around the animation block, so to speak.
You can also argue that the prevalent use of hallucinogens in society was a contributing factor into the reason why things has such a psychedelic feel to them during the '60s.
@totoro1591 Touche. Surrealistic art is also very cool while tripping. Some surrealist artists never touched drugs, but you'd have to agree that work such as Dali has a very hallucinogenic feel to it. Some surrealists were on drugs though, such as the amazing artwork of Alex Gray.
"In 1980, Dalí's health took a catastrophic turn. His near-senile wife, Gala, allegedly had been dosing him with a dangerous cocktail of unprescribed medicine that damaged his nervous system, thus causing an untimely end to his artistic capacity. At 76 years old, Dalí was a wreck, and his right hand trembled terribly, with Parkinson-like symptoms."
OMG!!! I'm so sick of people thinking you can't have an imagination without being on drugs!!!!! My goodness!!! The whole idea is that he has literally traveled to the land "beyond [his] wildest imagination, of course!"
I wish more people knew about this movie. It's so wonderful. Please go watch the whole thing here on youtube, just put in "Phantom Tollbooth"
I know exactly what you mean. If anybody paints with bright colors or says anything poetic or plays interesting music there's a whole host of losers instantly accusing them of being on drugs
As a fantasy writer, and totally not interested in even drinking anything with caffeine in it; like soda and/or coffee... it's insulting... besides, who really believes just being on drugs makes you an artist? Where did that idea come from? Maybe it's because powerful art tends to stem from trauma, and drugs are a way of dealing with trauma, if not in a good way?
@totoro1591@totoro1591 Dude, come on now! If taken out of context, this kid is baked. I've read the book, seen the cartoon, and posted this video. This particular scene would be quite nice on drugs. I really don't think that drugs were what was intended for this clip, but out of context it really makes one wonder. You guys really stand up for your tollbooth!
I can see the humour in that, I'm not trying to take you too seriously. What I was referring to is other cases kind of similar to this when someone assumes that you absolutely have to be on some kind of drug to do something creative, strange, different, etc.
@actron Of course, but mind you in '67 hallucinogens were very prevalent in society. I do believe that *some* of the cartoons created during the mid '60s-early '70s had a VERY psychedelic look and feel to some parts. I understand that there are also idiots out there who relate drugs with everything remotely intrinsic. But then... what about Fritz the Cat :)
