  • FYI. Hoglan was a roadie for Slayer when they toured for Show No Mercy in 1983. No shit.

  • Gene please lose some weight. It would be such a shame to loose such a talent to some silly obesity related problem.

  • Its funny enough that his work on "symbolic" is embarrasing when compared to how hes massively progressed today. in both technical skill & in weight. jk! jk! hoglan is pretty much at least the 2nd greatest metal drummer that ever lived.

  • Whos the better Gene ? Hoglan or Krupa

  • how this guy can play with so much intensity being so fat is beyond me, its remarkable

  • @Grimeyhoob HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Pickles the drummer

    doodily doo

    ding dong

    doodily doodily doo

  • Actually... the whole Mechanism album's getting played in the background :P

  • FYI, the song in the background around 2:00 is the first track on Mechanism's album called "Machine". Mechanism's one of Gene's OTHER bands, lol... awesomely epic too

  • "Brother To Brother" Gino Vanelli....classic.

  • you kno hes the drummer for the tv show metalocalaypse

  • He's the drummer for the live incarnation of Dethklok. What you hear on the show and the Dethklok records was done mostly in Reason.

  • ha ha, the dude with the gaffer tape.

  • If I had $10k I'd fly him to my house just to watch him beat the shit outta my mattresses.....and then I'd record some music with him

  • Gene rules!!!

  • What a nice guy and an amazing player too!!

  • Gene Hoglan is a beast! Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo are the greatest drummers ever!

  • @shiwazzle go fuck your self

  • unbelievably talented drummer, even more incredible that he is self taught

  • another thing about this amazing drummer is that for as fast as his feet are .. he has never.. and never will use axis or trick or any other current top of the line pedals .. he's using old school tama camco pedals .. just some proof that it's not the pedal .. it's the feet hitting the pedal

  • Jason Bitner of Shadows Fall uses the old school tama camco pedals also.

  • did not know that .... now i do

  • i'd take hoglan and christy's drumming in death and steve flyn's drumming in atheist over kollias and roddy any day .. i like the latter two a lot also .. but the cymbal work, jazzy influences, different feels of the earlier ones .. it's less robotic and more amazing

  • What about Sean Reinert's drumming?

  • He played in DEATH. He could be 600 lbs, but the fact still remains, HE PLAYED WITH DEATH!

  • If you haven't already, you should check out DARK ANGEL. His drumming is fantastic, and he recorded DARKNESS DESCENDS ('86) when he was like 18-19 years old.

  • i dont see what the big deal is about his weight. our bodies are really for nothing more than carrying around our heads, so who gives a fuck. hes a killer drummer and a genuine dude

  • lol calm down just like him for the way he plays drums not cos how fat he is

his pretty sick drummer an shit most metal drummers are like twigs but seeing this dude play it just increases repect just playing as good even better

  • Dude, think about it. Without some weight on your arms and legs you can't hit the drums as hard. It also forces him to be very efficient and not get exhausted to fast. He's become fat in order to play the drums like he does!

  • @Abjauchgrube lol your retard

  • "My airdrum set was huuge!"

    haha, he's awesome.

  • just checking him out cuz he's in fear factory now seems awesome

  • you should check out his other stuff SYL, DARK ANGEL, TESTMENT (demonic) OLD MAN'S CHILD, ZIMMER'S HOLE

  • The first time I heard of Gene Hoglan was when I heard Death's album "Human". He blew freakin' doors on that album. He is an amazing drummer and definitely a legend.

Seeing this interview totally shattered my perception of him as a mean looking tough guy from the pictures that I've seen. He seems quite nice soft-spoken and down-to-earth. An all around cool dude.

  • FYI the first Death album Gene played on was 'Individual Thought Patterns'. Sean Reinert played drums on 'Human'.

  • You're right...totally slipped my mind.

  • @drumthumpercomau also on symbolic

  • @drumthumpercomau and suddenly yamila68's world comes crashing down

  • Sean Reinert was the drummer on "Human."

  • you're a dumb fuck. i've never even heard of marty okelly.

  • Who the FUCK are you talking about? Sean Reinert was the drummer on Human.

  • @yamila68 That was Sean Reinert >.>

  • @yamila68 Excuse me but I think Sean Reinert play drums on human

  • stfu man so wut if hes fat? hes an awesome drummer

  • wow hes awesome and all but from watching metalocalypse i would have pictured him as skinnier

  • lol me 2, funny thing though look up devin townshend, hes one of the members from genes other bands. he looks just like pickles.

  • one of the best drummer ever for me!..LEGEND!!!

  • he went to my high school. actually, i went to his. he scared everyone. but was really cool. he resembles joe mama besser.

  • That are a hell of a hairlenghe the guy to the wright are carrieng around with?:O And of cause Gene! a good drummer who doesn´ t play blastbeats all the time! great drummer :)

  • You know the what the greatest thing about him is?

He is such an awesome and friendly guy and not arrogant in any way!

  • He moves fast for a big lad.

  • There he is guys, a living legend. One of the biggest influences not only in music, but in his humility.

  • Ankle weights??? This man is INCREDIBLE!!!! GLEN the DVD come on man, Get it out!!

  • I have followed drummers for years and of them all you are by far my favorite.

  • is his dvd out yet?

  • how many bpm can gene do?

  • 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

  • over 9000

  • WHAT 9000?!?!

  • he can do around 250 - 255 bpm.

  • Awesome. Great interview. Some education from the master himself. Hail Gene Hoglan.

  • All hail the, uhh... Ample amounts of flesh. Mister Gene Hoooooglan!

  • Gene rules!

  • Shit, nice intro.

  • Probably the best extreme metal drummer, along with Dave Lombardo and Pete Sandoval!

  • This guy is REALLY under-rated!!

  • @AyeBlinken I don't think he's underrated. Gene's one of the most respected drummers in metal. Few can even touch his credentials.

  • I love the fact that Kollias said that blastbeats with 2 feet are wrong, and then see one of his main influences doing it ;)

  • well think about it,it makes perfect sense to use both feet.kolias can have his one foot blasts but it dosent mean hes cool just because he chooses to make his right foot do the work that both his feet could be doing.dont get me wrong kolias may be a competent death metal drummer but I yawn at his playing because hes doing the same thing pete sandoval(morbid angel)was doing like 15 years ago. blasts were inovative back then but theyve been over used & bled dry in my opinion

  • Agreed man. I actually play in death metal bands, and there's lots and lots of blastbeats. And to be honest, im kinda losing interest about playing blasts. I use both feets as well. And i respect one feet blast too. What i dont like is people like kollias (who BTW is a hell of a drummer) saying is wrong. In drumming (maybe in every instrument there is), there's no wrong or right. And if you are a drummer, you have to know this.

  • its not wrong, its just taking the easy way out, like racing a man with flip flops while you have nike crosstrainers. Plus on a micro level they both have different time spacing.

  • Hail Gene Hoglan!

  • sweet!
