I've read the book seen the movie. Never entered my mind that Mothman was there to warn anyone. I believe it was an alien creature that for unknown reasons entered our dimension at that time and place. Another interesting series of alien beings entering our dimension is the Skinwalker ranch in Utah. I think it is possible Mothman actually caused the bridge collapse, or, had absolutely nothing to do with it, maybe it was just a faulty bridge. The collapse may have even scared Mothman away.
