I'm gonna straighten out all you guys who are saying that this couldn't happen. First of all the captain says the ship was low on ballast. The wave that hit the Poseidon was NOT a tsunami. It was a rouge wave, which DO exist and can be generated by underwater earthquakes (which is mentioned in the film). So, the Poseidon, was low on ballast, and was struck by a rouge wave(which is also called a tidal wave) and capsized. Happy?
Even though I know Leslie Nielsen did have serious roles in films I still can't help thinking he's going to say something goofy/funny 'and don't call me Shirley!'.
I actually like/love this film. I like/love it from the plot or scenes such as the scene where those people get thrown about in that room and injure themselves on pianos and get thrown on glass. I don't think my brothers liked/loved this film. This was never my favourite film. I presumbably was interested in ships and boats I also liked/loved the TV Show 'TUGS' and I actually want to work on the Queen Mary 2 when I am grown up.
@rickram1961... Same here, rickram1961. Except I was 10 yrs. old when I seen the movie back in 1972. Man that's kinda young to see a movie like that, non:) My gosh, there was even smoking in the cinema way back then. Eventually changed it to only the back 10 rows. Then to only up in the balcony. And then it was banned. Anyhoo, like yours it was at a capacity filled theatre in Welland, Ontario Canada; The Park Theatre. . And yes it was a fantastic film. Ciao
Don't hate me but...this wasn't the first Poseidon Adventure. The first one was made in 1911 and most ironically of all was shown on the Titanic as it struck the iceberg that claimed the ship.
@Frienmugenheight That's nothing but a rumor and a hoax. Snopes.com started it and it is a gigantic lie. Titanic didn't even have a theatre. Please don't believe it. Paul Gallico's novel wasn't even written until the '60s. This is the first film adaptation. Don't worry, I don't hate you.
@JPnintendofan Yeah man I broke my cardinal rule: Never trust just one source! After further research it's clear how absurd that claim is. Titanic did have a theater though....if you call a projector in the dining room a theater. Thanks for not hating me in my stupidity.

A little history relates that Irwin Allen took out a 2.5 million dollar loan from a bank to cover the financing obligations of the film, which Fox would not cover. History was made. The capsizing sequence is still amazing!
The remake, Poseidon, at a price tag of 175 million...very BAD indeed.
@kcj1974mem it wasnt a remake. sort of. it was wolfgang's vision of the book, but as it's own movie, it was pretty okay, and the special effects were fantastic.
This would be an awful disaster to experience, not that any disaster is good. But the ship being slammed onto its side, then going all the way under water until it's upside down, lord. The shot of the Poseidon with its superstructure and funnels under that dark green water still gets me. Picture what the Captain, bridge crew and any poor soul out for a midnight stroll went through.
Lol, imagine that, then imagine the original 1911 Poseidon Adventure film shot on the Titanic was shown to the passengers while the boat hit the iceberg and was scheduled for another showing that night since the passengers loved it so much. LOL
The remake could have been a good movie it had good actors in it, but Mrs. Irwin Allen, who produced it, didn't use her husbands #1 rule of a good disaster script - don't kill your main characters off on page 8 (approx 8 minutes into the film); get to know them first then start killing them off on page 25. And as good as the actors were, they don't compare to the Oscar Winners in the original.
These movies were all the rage in the 70's and we loved them, lapped them up. Then some bastard called Lucas made Star Wars and changed our lives forever!!!!!
many people would say Airport was the beginning of the "disaster" genre, and though it wasn't terrible it was too corny in places.i consider this movie to be the real start of the "disaster epic".
This film TOUCHED me!!! The cast, amazing!!! But very sad (in 0:55, when the Xmas tree fell down with the (poor) people - tears!)...the songs in the end; 'cryful'!!!
This is one darn good film. Even with the special effects of the remake, none could match this. I mean, come on, you put Gene Hackman and Ernest Borgnine together and there's bound to be a great result.
Tidal waves on the open ocean are about 2 inches high travelling at about 500 mph. They don't get large until they are about to reach the shore. Fantastic movie but scientifically inaccurate

horrible trailer. at the "in the early morning hours of new year's eve" wtf does that mean...and then, it say all the ACTORS' names as the people on the ship, NOT the characters. this is appalling. do they think we're idiots. i hated this time period in films. and this film is not great either. and the trailer tells us that 1400 people died. He was in the book. LOL He went to the find the bathroom and never came back. But back then in the movies you couldn't kill off a kid. LOL The movie was awesome and I saw it as a kid at the drive in theater. It made such an impact on me. The book was much better, but usually that is the case. The remake was good, but it didn't have the impact that the original had.
That's funny, I first saw it in '72 at a drive-in too. My parents and I were in our car, and our neighbors and their son, who was my best friend at the time, were in their car right next to ours, and we kept laughing and waving to each other over some of the lame dialogue (particularly Ernest Borgnine's cursing and constant complaining, and Stella Stevens telling him to shut the hell up! -- "I know what suppatory is!"-- LOL). But the part where Shelly Winters died was very sad and emotional.
You do realize that it's obvious from the very beginning that most people will die, I hope. It's not a secret, and I mean, come on, they say the actors names to say who was in it!
wow, for christmas, my dad got a ROKU netflix instant watch player, u get to watch the instant watch movies on ur TY, i just watched thisone about 20 minutes ago, not as good as the 2006 version, but it kept me entertained, i reccomend this =D
Not as good as the remake????? Oh my god, you must be a young person because the original had so much atmosphere and you actually cared about the characters. The new one had plenty of CGI, but will never light a candle to the first one. I never felt for the people in the new one that I did in the first one.
@JWJNC serious i agree there was really sad to see the cast die off in the 70s one but i have to admist seeing the remake and what happened to the ship when it turned over twisted my stomach to hell it really did scare the hell out of me and truthfully i cared more about the ship getting hurt then the people hope that doesnt make me a bad person
see this is what makes this movie different than the remake. this movie is an adventure meaning it's purely for fun and has not one scary moment. the other is claustrophobic, explosive and actually matters when someone dies. not just "LINDA, LINDA, NOT MY LINDA...so what next?". 2006 POSEIDON ALL THE WAY!!!
It was said from other actors on the set that Shelly Winters would eat hot chile with her bare hands. I dont know why anyone would do this but I guess its because its Shelly Winters.
Since the Asian Tsunami on 12/26/2004, we now know what the author and director of this book and movie obviously didn't ... there is no way a tsunami would have hits this ship, as tsunamis in deep water are only inches high and bareley felt.
What would take out a ship ... most definitely, is a rogue wave -- like the one that hit the Andrea Gail, lost at sea during the perfect storm of 1991.
Maybe they just had the terminology wrong, huh? LOL!
@Beatpoet7371 "Tidal wave" is a misnomer, yes, but rogue waves (check the Wikipedia entry, to which -- to my annoyance -- youtube won't let link) are real and could produce the same result. Fortunately, they're quite rare, so much so that their occurrence has only recently been confirmed (see link).

@Beatpoet7371 you may be right about tsunamis, but the ship used in the original movie, the Queen Mary, reportedly had stability problems and was hit badly twice by rogue waves (not sure of the cause), once during WWII and another time later by a wave that almost turned the ship around. I have read that the author Paul Gallico was on board the ship during the second hit and that's where he got the idea for the book (couldn't confirm this anywhere).
I'm right with you on that one. Gene Hackman? Shelley Winters? Pamela Sue Martin! Babe of the century! Come on!! There's just no question. These kids just don't know what they're talking about.
posiedon adventure original clip okay can anyone answer this --why can't they give us the original silver screen copy !?like close encounters had done.,
whats now a "special edition " phoney copy
is no more than laser disc transfer not true 70 mmm transfer the film is missing footage
I know so well, rogo's wife slaps child and screems come on kid missing on DVD ...
also DVD sound needs fixing high pitch whistle when bornine screems you preacher !
So the actors were on the ship instead of the characters? I'm really confused now. I Jack Albertson was on the ship, why did they keep calling him Manny? Jewish mob connections?
My favorite movie! Saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid. Used to re-create the capsizing with my cousin's Barbie dream house!lol Also used to have the viewmaster reels. Thanks for the 70's flashback.
weeelllll...in the new movie, fergie plays this lady called gloria. she died when the boat flipped. shes in the credits. there is one song during the credits caled wont let you fall which is by fergie.
An amazing film, far better then even some of today's movies. A brilliant cast, amazing plot, classic themes, ingenius actors/actresses..This movie is AWESOME! I am 14 and think this is one of the greatest movies of all time, all around. 10 STARS!
I thought the 1972 Poseidon (I saw that in 2005) was pretty good. And the 2006 Poseidon was also great. The new one had better special effects, but the older one had a bit of a "trapped" feeling because they didn't show above the surface. Both were good!
why does no one agree with me? THE ORIGINAL IS CRAP!!! don't you hate the religious subplot, the lame characters and the unneeded humour. and don't even get me started on the effects: toy boats look more realistic. Fine fine if no one agrees with me i just hope you know i laughed my ass off when shelley winters had a heart attack from holding her breath and eric shay's voice and dialogue gave me a migrane!
In some scenes it´s difficult to concentrate on the history. If you´re a male you can´t help but stare to the legs of Susan Shelby (Pamela Sue Martin) :-D.
It is true lol. True Roge waves are very rare. But some are real and they have been seen up to 30 feet tall! Could it flip a big ship over-no. But heck it would be a heck of an Impact.
The original is the best by far. All fiction. Based on Paul Gallico's actual experience aboard the Queen Mary one time when she almost turned over. It is a model of the QUeen Mary seen in this movie.
Wow... haven't seen that trailer since about 1973! Now I remember why I was so crazy about going to see the movie. Was my all-time favorite while growing up. Guess it still kinda is today :)

@Beatpoet7371 For your info sir, even though your comment is 2 years old, that it wasn't a tsunami that hit the Poseidon it was a rogue wave.
crisrea12345 10 months ago
Oh my God. It's a movie, it's fantasy. Go watch the Discovery channel.
talktopete 10 months ago

What a stupid trailer, it tells you everything, you don't need to see the movie.
Nnovata 3 years ago 3
So the actors were on the ship instead of the characters? I'm really confused now. I Jack Albertson was on the ship, why did they keep calling him Manny? Jewish mob connections?

My favorite movie! Saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid. Used to re-create the capsizing with my cousin's Barbie dream house!lol Also used to have the viewmaster reels. Thanks for the 70's flashback.

The original movie had a much better script.
Did the remake have the song "The Morning After" by Maureen McGovern?
If not, then the remake just totally sucks!

An amazing film, far better then even some of today's movies. A brilliant cast, amazing plot, classic themes, ingenius actors/actresses..This movie is AWESOME! I am 14 and think this is one of the greatest movies of all time, all around. 10 STARS!
SKINNYGINNYKITTIES 4 years ago 3
there's no sane reason to "remake" a movie like this. period.

Typically poor Hollywood big studio judgement. Chimps could do a better job deciding what movies should be made.

Amen! Thous shalt not remake a classic!

In some scenes it´s difficult to concentrate on the history. If you´re a male you can´t help but stare to the legs of Susan Shelby (Pamela Sue Martin) :-D.

was this a true story? which one do u like the best? the first or the newest one?
Xlivelaughluvxxo 4 years ago 3
Not a true story. All Hollywood.
Definitely the original.
TJamesBell 4 years ago
It is true lol. True Roge waves are very rare. But some are real and they have been seen up to 30 feet tall! Could it flip a big ship over-no. But heck it would be a heck of an Impact.
cold409 4 years ago 3
The original is the best by far. All fiction. Based on Paul Gallico's actual experience aboard the Queen Mary one time when she almost turned over. It is a model of the QUeen Mary seen in this movie.
dallaskeffer 4 years ago
really?? I gotta see it then!
Xlivelaughluvxxo 4 years ago
Oh yeah. You gotta check it out. It was a HUGE, HUGE blockbuster at the time. Like right up there with Jaws.

The original is THE ONE to see. Way better.

Whooa! Roddy McDowell's box office draw was so expendable enough that he gets killed off in the
trailer even?!
