STAR-TAC baby ftw! wow i lusted after that phone BIG TIME in LA all the rich ppl and wannabes had em....back then cell phone contracts were super expenisve...lol my prepaid slider blows em out the water now
I think i got my first cell in 1997. It was motorola qualcom something. I used GTE for service and i paid $50 a month. I think everybody still had PAGERS then.
Had my first cellular phone in 1995. It was a Audiovox bag phone (or car phone as I used it). Was $99.99 and came with battery and charger. I remember my plan was $50.00/month and 20 minutes talk time. Had the phone for just over 6 years. I have a Blackberry Tour now that was $130.00 and $80.00/Month with unlimited text, date, nights & Weekends minutes and 450 minutes prime call time.
AFTER THIS 10 YRS, YOUR SON, YOUR GRANDCHILD, THE CHILDREN NEARLY YOUR HOME..ALSO LOL to you when they see you still usuing iPhone4, HTC Sensation, iPad2...as same as your LOL with this commercial.
why is it that whenever theres a commerical tthe guy talking always has the same exac voice as everyone? is it just a computerized voice or something? or the same exac guy!
Did the annoucer man just said, "Put it in your pocket or purse?" I don't know about any of you, but I DEF. could not fit that thing into MY pocket, hahahaha!!!
My mom got one of these, but through the hospital where she worked (nurse). The plans were CRAZY expensive so neither of my parents cared to get one for personal use. I remember as a kid I would call people off the cell phone and my mom would freak out because it wasn't for personal calling. lol
"Ya I got all my guys working on it" Cell Phones must have been seen as a way to get of work and go on your speed boat....makes sense! Hey it was the 80's!!

I remember that phone, it was huge and had terrible battery life. Also back then service was very expensive, we paid like $198 one month and barely used the phone (less than 1 hr that month) when GTE was our cell phone provider.
Everyone knows that Apple invented the mobile phone, the concept of actually making a phone-call without wires was the stuff of wonder and science fiction before the iPhone came out... Steve Jobs told me himself.
I remember sitting on my bed whilst living in Vancouver and ordering this phone back in 1997. I remember not knowing how many minutes were "realistically" needed in order to not end up with a $600 "Cellular" bill.
I remember taking it to work and my boss didn't know how to react to me having it on my desk. There wasn't a way to silent it.

Omfg, that leather case design was on phones for years to come. Even on bar phones! lol. Kinda sad though, at least back then if someone tried to mug you, you can use your brick sized phone as a weapon.
@luis36702 Not back in those days. I used to drive through Toronto gabbing on a phone about the same time this commercial was aired, nobody cared. Life was good.
I remember back in those times having to wait at home for an important call back during those times and to make a call away from home, having to put quarters in the pay phone. You never saw very many people carry cell phones back in the 80s and early to mid 90s.
This sure brings back the memories. I remember when having a cellular phone to carry with you every where you go was a luxury. Now days, cell phones are more advanced and extremely common and pretty much replacing land lines in the home. I remember the first time I had a cell phone, it was a bag phone that plugged into the car plug and to me that was a big luxury back then.
@BoogsterSU2 Yes , Verizon is a conglomerate of companies including cellular one. AT&T and Cingular were both separate companies, AT&T just bought them out , same with sprint.
Wow $20 was a GREAT price for cell phones back then. I got my first one in 1998 and it was like $400 + this ridiculous monthly calling plan for 50 MINUTES was an extra $100. Lol the days
I really wanted this phone. It sounded like such a great deal! So I called the 800 number to order one, and a foreign lady answered she asked what company i was trying to reach, CellularOne, and she said "I'm sorry, we do not answer calls for that company." Suspicious. I also visited the website and saw nothing about the awesome Motorola 550 Flip Phone.
@MsEazye2010 YES!!! It's about time some retard would reply to that comment and actually believed i was being serious. it only took a week though so it still wasn't that long. So good job at proving to everyone how much of a retard you really are for actualling thiking i was being serious
Geez, does any cell phone video NOT have a comment about the iPhone? Seriously, iPhone users are assholes with too much pride. Android users don't go boasting about their phones, even though Android is a LOT better in my opinion.
I'd love a GSM-E158 Brick phone. Don't know what it is? Look it up. Brick is in! 8D
@ismaeldeltoro Dude, I have better things to do with my money than buy hype. I am an investor. I could spend thousands buying an iPad, iPod, iPhone, and an iBook, but why? Android offers the same thing iPhone offers for less than half the price.
First rule of investing: Don't turn cash into trash.
The DPC-550 was from around 1996, my dad had one. Also had a moto car kit that made it a real 3 watt unit when plugged in (like a bag phone or normal car phone), rather than .6 watt when standalone, very necessary back then when in rural areas.
Someone should have told that black gentleman that in only 14 short years it would become a crime to talk on the phone while driving... Probably would have never purchased the damn thing!! :-P
Way back in the day it was like "Hey, let me borrow your celluar phone?" Then you'd hand him something the size of a shoe box. Now days, you could lose the darn thing, being the size and thickness of a credit card. Go figure how fast things change and by how much.
It would be funny to find one of these at a yard sale...wrap it up for your preteen/teens first cell phone but buy them a modern one but use one of these to trick them at first....to see there reaction:P See how they will react thinking there first cell phone they got was an old dino...while all there friends may have smartphones and such lol and then after they are done in panic mode be like chill out HERES your new phone! and give them the real one! lol
@CanadianHitman08 i also had that phone too. i am sitting here lol , thinking how cell phone has came a long way from being a bulke phone , to a compack phone , back in the day it did not have tex messaging or the internet , it was antlog phone , they were chargeing you more per a min. on the call's .
@buzznugget our society lost that skill when as verrie77 said texting arrived but also people focusing on holding a phone up to their ear and listening to someone on the phone takes their mind off the road
@wafhsecl Oh good point. So i'm guessing in the 80's and 90's they used a bluetooth headset instead of holding the phone up to their ears? because like you just said holding the phone up to their ears and listening to someone took their minds off the road. then they probably used a bluetooth headset in the 80's and 90's.
My first "mobile" phone (I use that term loosely here) was bolted to the wall behind the driver seat of my company car. It was possible to detach it, but it weighed about 10 kilos. The sound quality and cost of a call resembled that of the moon landings. I remember people staring at it in awe (yes, the phone). Since then, I have had a wide range of brick phones. I stopped being amazed of smallmess somewhere around the Ericsson T10s and the Nokia 8810i.
4 The incredible price of 19.95 and you'll also receive the bible statement bill every month for the ridiculously low price of 450 dollars call now this deal wont be around forever!!!
Cellular One is what my mom had service through before they were bought out by Verizon atleast the southern region. I also have this model. Used it too. Prior to the Analog cut off and GPS mandate. Have a Droid 1 now.
@SouthwesternEagle Iphones are a peace of shit Entertainment item.WOW COOL BITCH AFter 5 Months of Your Phone plan, You Just Spent more than your Phone was worth, WOW dude You are really a big fucking retard!. People knew how to drive and talk on the phone back then. When did our society lose that skill?
buzznugget 1 year ago 3
@buzznugget When texting arrived I guess.
Verrie77 1 year ago
@buzznugget our society lost that skill when as verrie77 said texting arrived but also people focusing on holding a phone up to their ear and listening to someone on the phone takes their mind off the road
wafhsecl 1 year ago

Cellular One is what my mom had service through before they were bought out by Verizon atleast the southern region. I also have this model. Used it too. Prior to the Analog cut off and GPS mandate. Have a Droid 1 now.
