  • I do not see any reason for the deduction. It was a more difficult and spectacular routine than Maxie's. Ma boycotted the medal ceremony and did not take her silver medal. Judging at these Worlds was outrageous...The main judge was a notorius Mrs Keller from East Germany.

  • The thing that seals it for me is Ma's legendary toe point. Just beautiful. Gnauck's routine is attractive because she's so aggressive and swings with so much power, but I thought Ma's style was far superior.

  • Ma's routine was superior to Maxi's from start to finish. She should have won gold.

  • She missed some of her cast to handstands.

  • She didn't need to reach a handstand.

  • That was not a deduction under that code. Notice other competitors from the same Worlds like Maxi Gnauk also did not quite hit all their handstands.

  • I love how the commentator complimented her more than pointing out flaws, today they always badmouth gymnasts!

  • Its true, always used to be a far more positive feel to the whole sport I feel...In regards to competition at least...

  • I totally agree

  • Indeed i recall China protested by not showing up for the silver medal, for a change i totally agreed with China. But that didnt help much, EastGermany could never be outdone by a newcommer, be she even from fellow communist China.

  • Well, that's definitely underrated - she was one of the best in the world at that time. I'm glad at least she won the Olympic gold for UB at LA 1984 (even with the boycott, well, an Olympic gold medal is an Oylmpic gold medal.)

  • Wow, she didn't get a 10 for that? Oh, that's too bad. Such originality and precision. I really like that Voronin release and that dismount is so fantastic. But, though she didn't win that title she spurned an entire culture and furture generations of legendary bar workers from China.

  • The commentator made a mistake-she does not do a Voronin release-Maxi Gnauck does in her UB routine. It's the element Gnauck does from a hip beat uprise to a straightlegged jump over the high bar to catch. Ma's release is a hip circle straddle hecht/half. Nadia did this move at the 1979 Champions AA and in 1980when she missed it and fell off in Team Optionals.

  • If my memory is correct, she (China) did not accept her silver medal.

  • The judges were biased against her routine. She was underscored.

  • Well, I think Gnauk may have won over her because Gnauk had 12 o'clock handstands, but Ma looked short on her handstands. I have never been a fan of Gnauk though.

  • Gnauck won because she was an East German. For some reason those gymnasts were always gifted medals in finals. They did the same in 1988 when gymnasts like Dagmar Kersten took bars silver over better routines like Shushunova's and Boginskaya's.

  • I agree about Dagmar Kersten- I thought her 1988 Olympics compulsary bars routine was not good and did not deserve a 10.

  • The only deserved 10.00's at Seoul in compulsories were Silivas's. Her comp. UB flowed like a dream. Kersten's routine was good-but not great like Daniela's.

  • Ma Yanhong was ROBBED. And I'm sure Maxi knows she was outswung by a mile.

  • Did she get a 10?

  • No, she lost to Maxi Gnauck. The Chinese Team filed a protest but failed. I think they received a warning instead.

  • i love ma yanhong!! mind sending this to me at huiyenn93@yahoo.com?

  • Sent! Sorry it took so long; I've recently switched computers.

  • Can you send it to me too? Reply to me, so I can send you my email in a private message.
