@digipotty37 Fallen Phoenix Slope is the name of the mountain, Zhang Ren's soldiers didn't write it. It is more of a coincidence that the name was Fallen Phoenix and Pang Tong's Taoist name is Young Phoenix. If your name is Jim though, and you are walking into a canyon named "Jim died here", you'll probably take it as a bad omen.

@KomonoDragon no your think of Sun Quan, originally Pang Tong wanted to serve Sun Quan, Zhuge Liang wrote him a reccommendation letter but Pang Tong refused to use such a item wanting to get his position based on his own merit, Sun Quan however thought he was to ugly and turned him away, Pang Tong then went to Liu Bei who also thought he was to ugly and gave him a minor position. For a while Pang Tong simply did nothing till Liu Bei sent Zhang Fei to sort him out.

Pang Tong was killed because the officer who set up the ambush in the valley thought that it was Liu Bei on his white horse

The reason why Liu Bei is so sorrowful and eager to take the land of Shu after Tong dies, is because Lei Bei not long ago intrusted the white horse to him, and feels as though its all his fault

In simple terms

Had Pang Tong not been given or been riding the white horse at the time, there is a strong chance that he wouldnt've died as the ambush was set for Liu Bei

I did a search and found that it's located near present day Luojiang County of Sichuan province. They have a Pang Tong Shrine there and about 0.6 mile northeast of the shrine is where Pang Tong got ambushed.

The shu army had spears and swords and a sizable number of men and commanders. Zhang ren only had foot soldier archers and if you're going to pursue someone, you need cavalry to cut them down while they are disorganized because if on foot, you're not fast enough so they can get away and get into a formation to resist cavalry. If you pursue with archers even on horseback, spearmen and swordsmen could butcher them in that narrow pass because a bow is useless hand to hand.
