I played the oboe cues on an alto sax in an Army band. I had to work my arse off, but I got it to sound appropriate. I used an old King Alto with a meyer #5 mouthpiece and a medium Van Doren reed.....I listened a lot to the Eastman Wind Ensemble to get the right "feel"...
I agree with 1955marfa. Played this piece my junior and senior class in high school (73-74) for concert contest. We did not rush it either. Oboe solo is one of the most difficult to play. In others I have listened to they subed the oboe with a sax and it was awful.
In Texas, this performance would earn a Division III--pitch problems throughout; brass is blasting/tempo problems throughout. The oboe sounds like she's playing a differnt piece altogether..Overall--a butchering of the piece. It's not meant to be played so fast and so loud.

i agree with many but the intintion in many players and keeping in tune with many wa very difficult mant are flat and some are sharp thks piece can be asy to play if the main problems are covered even during the cut time players were making staccotos on the notes i would give this band a C
Its a much more beautiful piece when played slow about 72 bpm. at the beginning. Our Conductor kept the tempo slow and romantic it speeds up later then retards, the intro really needs to be slow. By the time you get to 118 its gonna speed up, and you will want the tempo as slow as possable. The whole piece is 12 min. long. It takes a lot of control of air.
@jht161056 You are correct. The original is at 72 BPM - so is the Curnow. The issue (and it's a common mistake) is that it's *eighth note* is 72 BPM and not quarter note is 72 BPM.
If your eighth notes are at 72 - it's slower, and like the original.
Here, here, way too fast! It is much more romantic at a slower tempo. This pace, and ridged tempo doesn't do the piece justice. Give the oboe/english horn his freedom as Alfred Reed has written. Russia in 1944...
pssh. they suck. i had to memorize this song for marching band. nd they use music?? im 13 nd those adults cant memorize their music? losers

Check out, you tube; 12-9-2008 'Russian Christmas' part 1 & 2 by Stambaugh Youth Concert Band
still a little fast in the intro but very well done.
This band did it well just way too fast.
