Not too bad....just needs a bit more practice. There're 3 lengths..the long one (As shown) is more traditional. The dancers are supposed to dance slower but still with a snap (More graceful). The medium length one's which most preferred are for the streets and stage. Shorter ones are supposed to be used on the stage or on the poles. The guy in the back have to hold onto the belt of the head guy, and the head guy can't really thrust forward suddenly because of the short length of the body.
I personally believe this type of lion is the best type of lion, but this is just based on experience and opinion. Like a previous commentator, I do not want to be mean, but the lion does look half dead or half drunk/sleepy. If the head can turn crisper as well as more use of the eyes, the lion would look much better. Another point I noticed was that the lion looked down a lot and when it did the "Big Drum" motion (the walking part with the head raised), the lion was not fierce. When the lion...
Does that motion, the lion's personality or emotion should be feeling like that the lion "is the shit" and be more "cocky" in a way. And yes, sashes would be a great benefit as to the lifting act.
A final note, I would like to see your group continue to use that style of lion as this style of lion head (not the dance) is dying out really fast and being replaced by the short, fluffy, and light lion heads. But overall not bad for the new people you had noted in the description.
don't take this the wrong way, it is meant as constructive criticism. Your lion looks like he is half dead; try putting more life into the lion. By that I mean raising the head more often, sharper movements, lighter feet, etc.
@ThatBlokeRandom Not really. Black lions just means it's a new school or a young team. When you gotta fight you gotta fight....no matter which color beard or color lion you're using ha ha. Btw....a red faced black beard lion represents Kwan Kung/General Kwan. There're other beard/lion combinations to represent other famous Chinese persons/heros.
The long tail is the best. You should definitely stick to the traditional lion (personal opinion) If possible, get a heavier and larger head. So much more fiercer and appealing. If possible, use more tail motion; it becomes easier to see as well as makes the lion look livelier.
@mumalu8 thats what they say I haven't figure out why. It doesn't seem to have big adornments or anything so I think its just the build of the lion head maybe different materials.
You should probably get a much shorter tail..that way the person in back can see when the person in front starts to move foward, so they don't just get pulled foward, they know when to walk. Also, a smaller head would probably fit you better. The legs just look scrawny with the head that large.
Yeah, I agree. We also have a couple traditional lions that also have quite long tails. But the heads aren't as big as this one(or it doesn't seem so).
It's a pretty lion though. It just doesn't look as puppy-like as for example, the Hok San style.
but still, cool points because you have a traditional lion head.
Also, you know what helps with jumps? A SASH. Makes it easier for the tail to lift the head by giving it something to hold onto and lift with, and if the tail has a sash, it will keep the tail's pants secure which keeps the head's foot from slipping. If you have a sash on already, then my apologies.
Thank you very much for all the advice. It's probably some of the most helpful criticism we've recieved in a while that was also kind. In response to a few things you mentioned:
- We have heard about & seen the thing about the sashes, although we have never tried it yet.
- None of us have any hok san training, but that may change soon.
- We're heading to San Francisco soon, where we hope to buy a new lion head, & drum too.
- We will discuss your comments at our meeting tomorrow. Thanks!
ps. If you have the resources, it's a good idea to use the appropriate lion head according to the style. There are many differences between traditional and malasian style heads, but one of the more obvious ones are a sharper horn for traditional, as well as a curved mouth. You probably know this, but you were doing a traditional style dance, minus the jumps.
Overall, a decent job; you just need a few small, but crucial touch ups. Your first head has good style. Your second head has movements of great streangth. Since your a high school group (is that right?), perhaps you should try hok-san (malaysian) style. Its more playful and acrobatic and in general, is just a lot more entertaining for an audience and is really fun! Your music was good, but could've had cleaner stops. Nice work! Keep up the practice!
To follow up on what "vietricer" said, when you walkyou don't want to be upright. keep bent over, w/ knees bents, and kick the feet back as if you were running in place.
btw, your mini jump around 8:43 was the right idea, just crouching into a squat.
when you go for a stacked jump, it might be helpful to 1, not do it with such a big head, especially since traditional style almost never does jumps, and two, to aid you with landing a jump successfully, try a mini jump first in which you do a tiny hop, followed by going down into a sqat, and jumping up (w/o kicking your feet back). Then, the head just extends the legs. This will give you a more stable footing and a stronger stance.
The guy who switches out at 6:25 has awesome head movements, but can keep the head on his back when looking down by bending the back further, rather than bending his neck.
The whole point of traditional style lion dancing is to look strong and aggressive. Try working on your shakes (when one extends the arms and shoots the head out).
Refrain from taking the head off your back-shoulders. It looks slopy.
um...i know you say no negative comments but a advices (may help you or maybe not) when you bow...never show your face like that. you don't have to WINK so much lolz...once or twice like ever 2-3minutes is fine...don't walk like you normaly walk, walk as you a lion ^^ btw your druming is awesome
Your Welcome...Um...I believe that tail of the your lion is a little bit too long...Ex. A lion; their back is straight...not like super curve like right now...measure the tail where only 1 person can fit on the back and not like 3-4 like right now lolz.
Well we have one with a shorter tail, except its too short. It would look better with the pants, but somebody lossed a pair. The head is kind of inbalanced also, but we're thinking of purchasing a new one.
@vietxricer Only on the poles do the lion dancer (Head) don't show his/her face during a bow. On the stage and on the streets (At least traditionally) the lion head actually looks up rearwards towards the sky just before each bow. Check out some old video clips of kung fu movies with lion dances....when they bow they do as I typed. Btw...that's the way I learnt it too.

Perfect! The reason I have any knowledge of lion dancing is because I'm in a troupe.
We're called Cherng Loong Lion Dance Troupe. We're based in SAN FRANCISCO!!!
It would be great if you guys dropped in some time. We'll be glad to exchange ideas, share some pointers, and get to know each other!
We mainly practice hok san style, but we do a little bit of traditional style as well. Perhaps you can show us a little something!

Lookin' good around 4:50 =]
The greatest thing you can improve on is keeping your back bent over and your butt sticking out, at all times (even when shooting the head out).
