hi there, i started crafting armor, given that i have a working knowledge of auto body repair functional metal shaping it seems like a good time to ask seeing as i am getting into manufacturing basic plates already, what steel types and gauges would you recommend for armor shards and just basic partial plating, i am not worried too much it taking damage because i have a few tricks up my sleeve on that one, just simply asking so that i can make my work better and more practical.
From scrap yards, hardware store like Lowes, machine shops sometimes, online. Cheapest route is a local scrap/surplus yard. That's where I get my metal from. Paid 13 bucks the other day for about 12 sqft of 16g mild steel.
From looking at the video where he is photographing the armor, it looks like this piece is one that hangs off the bottom of the breast plate that protects the upper thigh and articulates.
this is eric dube's work... it's sort of porn for reenactors. these are the sort of people who are there drooling and going "phwoar, look at the sabatons on that!"
(And if you get a half-naked woman in armour, these are the sort of people who point out the inaccuracies of the unprotected areas of skin, before noticing they're half-naked.)
A true Inspiration I started making armor and weapons about 3 years ago and have made 2 swords 2 helmets and a front muscle cuirass with plain back you inspire me to take my skill to the next hight P.S I have pics of the things I have made if you would like to see them
i don't see how... i play runescape and i know it only takes 3 seconds to make 1 body plate, and they are pretty standard... this is art at its most solid form.
He must have many years of experiance to be so accurate with his hammers; I saw no mistakes made. The amount of dies was very impressive, also. I would like very much so to know the exact percentage of carbon in that steel, please.
@SgtViktor As far as I understood, in the Medieval times they also worked mostly on the cold Metal, only using heat in some very complex parts and for heat-treatment...is this somehoe correct?
what I wanna know is how that plate was being made!!!

Your work is incredible. My favorites so far are the breast plate with the braiding and the armet.

If this guy tries to pick up a girl, and she asks what he does for living, he can say: "I make suits of armor".
Hehe...

Are you doing this totally cold? Or was the preliminary shape heated?
nice job!

I use 16g cold rolled steel, for this operation it was all done cold it not that hard too do whit the right tool.

@SgtViktor Wouldn't the fact that its so easy to cold hammer mean it wouldn't stand up well in combat?
insolvancy 5 months ago
armour is always done completly cold, it hardens it much better by compressing the metal.
spleegulence 3 years ago
looks to me like 16 gauge steel, probably cut from sheet metal. that and an amazing amount of hammer accuracy.
Sparticus1368 4 years ago
What kind of steel do you use on this, without having to heat on fire the metal?
