@itsjustmesophie I do sometimes. Not this time...I wanted a conservative roll so as not too make the loose hair on the bottom look too thin. However, for an amped up version of this roll, check my Flat Reverse Victory Rolls tutorial or my 'Classic Pin Up Gone Wrong' video...:)
this was the first hairstyle i ever taught myself to do (wen i was 14)...i actually find other rolls hard to do cos my hands keep trying to do this lol
HEE HEE....I haven't watched this video in a while. It is SO weird to see you with blonde hair again. I had forgotten that it was blonde when you first started doing these. Oh, and I miss the "ghost" (baby) opening and shutting the door all the time in the vid's. LOL
WHen you first came on the video, how'd you get that hair>? That itself was awesome. Btw does your hair have to be a certain texture to make it work well? Oh and Im tan skin. What lipstick would you say suits tan skin girls more? I dont think red will look that good. Idk. :/
@thememebuendia ...and worth every minute! :) Actually, hair was all many ladies had...clothing was rationed. This was their way of feeling beautiful in spite of the dificult times.
@thememebuendia No longer than it takes for most girls to try to straighten their hair. I don't find the styling too bad, but sleeping on rollers is a pain.
thank you so much for these videos. i've decided to stop starving myself to obtain the 12 year old boy look that is so attractive these days for women, and go to the beautiful classic 40's look that my body is meant to look like. Thank you so much for in your words, refusing to be modern. :)
Whats the best hair cut to pull off this style... for a beginner? My hair is really long right now and it seems damn near impossible to get this look.
@TheAlexandraRaven I love how people assume they know me by watching this five minute, sped up, and silent video. :) THe pouting thing is something I naturally do when I'm thinking and have done since I was about 2 years old. It isnt likely to be something I can 'fix' based on yours or anyone els's comments. I'm here to teach...my pout it just something ya'll will have to deal with. :)
@TheAlexandraRaven Oh...perhaps it was the 'Enough with the pouting!' and the subsequent sad face that threw me off...seems pretty critical to me. ;-)
i LOVE your videos...i've been attempting 40s hairstyles for years with mediocre success. i've always wanted to wear these styles as an everyday look, and i think i've finally got it this time! thanks for sharing!! =)
You are so pretty! I seriously love this style. I wish it were the 40's that era seems so much fun and people were just generally nice and ...clean lol.

@Rtfn88 If you were born in the 40's you wouldnt have been able to enjoy these styles! haha...no I understand what you mean. I wear my hair/makeup in vintage style every day and I don't care if it's in 'fashion' or not. :)
@LisaFreemontStreet That's cool though! Different. I don't like the modern styles so much. The only look I really like that is used today is Pompadours, I think that's so sexy but it's not a new style :-)
im waiting for this 40's look to come back in fashion, the 60's look has come back so hopefully this will! i would LOVE to have my hair done like a classic 40's style and every morning do my makeup like the 40's. PLEASE come back!
@BeccaLovesLahmas Um, I wear my makeup and hair in 40's style every day...so do many of my friends. If you love it, do it...it doesnt matter if it's in fashion or not. Incidentally, I don't know a female who doesnt look beautiful in styles of the 40's and 50's. I think that is enough to wear it, regardless of the trends. :)
hi!! i love ur vids!! ^_^ since tomorrow is Halloween ima b a pin up girl and im goin to attempt this hairdo. my hair is stubborn and frizzy , do u have any tips for me so i can get smooth curls ? ^_^ should i curl my hair tonight?
@BrittanyRose1991 Keep practicing! It took me a couple trial runs on pin up makeup and hair. Don't get frustrated...whenever I had free time (say a Thursday night), I would bust out the pin up tutorials, and work on it. Thanks to Lisa and others, I can do full pin up makeup and hair in about 45 minutes! You can do it, doll face! <3
Im fascinated with the 1940's style....from the hair to the clothes. And I wanted to get into it and stuff but I cant pull it off cause I'm tanned. Soo since my sister's in to it too....and since she's fair....Ima do it for her. :))
So how'd u get your fringe to curl? Like that?? I mean....its awesome!!
Hi there! Love your video and would love to do this hairstyle for my Halloween costume. I have lots of layers on the ends of my hair- any advice for keeping those layers from sticking out while doing the Victory Roll? I've tried and tried again, but those pesky layers like to poke out!
@ninveleth Mine is actually heavily layered as well (and must be, to accomplish retro styles). If you roll it, the ends will stay tamed and uniform, for the most part. Hairspray also helps. If you still can't do this easily, try sponge rollers (which create a sturdier curl) and coating your hands w/ pomade as you roll.
@Zelda199 yes, as long as you pull the sides up tightly instead of letting them sag...if they sag it will accentuate the roundness of your face. So make sure to keep them tight to elongate the face.
@LisaFreemontStreet I'm a guy, and I think that hair style looks pretty sweet. I like the vintage look on women. Glad to see it never really went out of style. Some women dress so provocative, you can't help but look. But, I would rather look at a classy lady look like that, than some women wearing a "barely there" outfit, lol. Kudos to you on your creativity :D
I started trying to do your rolls with my normal hair, which was long, not layered. After being too frustrated with that, I had it cut in layers, like you said would be better. It's not easier. In fact, it's harder now because it's layered .. and the pieces fall out every time I start to roll. I tried again. And again. And again. I know u said be patient but, I'm so tired. My arms are shaking because they're in so much pain from holding them up. WHAT am I doing wrong?
@ManiacalAsh It is harder initially but absolutely will provide a better looking roll. Spray the sections you're rolling w/ a high hold hairspray until they are basically a cement chunk in order to get the rolling part down...then you can cut back on the hairspray. Also try pomade.
Great!! I love it! butttttt, i have a problem. i have pretty long hair, so after i do the rolls, what can i do with left over hair? its really hard to make a roll in the back :| thank you!
@xxPOISONEDcupcakeXX I know you didn't ask me, but I have really long hair as well like to the middle of my back and when i do rolls i usually curl my hair with hot rollers, or if i do a pin curl set it's already curled or i do a super easy roll in the back [ i'll try to make a video] i hope that helped! but Lisa's gibson tutorial is waayyyy awesome as well!
You should use the Louis Prima version of that old black magic next time. It sounds really similar but I think keely smith has one of the classiest voices of all time. And thanks for the video I always have a hard time with victory rolls.
When ever i use sponge rollers, and i sleep with them in my hair, When i wake up they are half ways out, ill roll it to the top of my head and when i wake up they are half ways off, is that normal?
@redmicmuf Chances are, they didnt slide down until the curl was already set. So no biggie. And also, try sleeping w/ a light chiffon scarf over the top of the set...this will prevent the slipping somewhat as well. :) Today's video uses sponge rollers from an overnight set, actually.
I have a problem of whenever I curl my hair, when I take out the hair curler, the curls simply fall straight down, with maybe a little curve at the bottom. Do you have any idea how to fix this??
@rasputin63 lol funniest comment ever! Actually, lots of us DO dress up like this regularly. The rockabilly scene is full of lovely vintage styled ladies. But I wouldnt try to sway you one way or another. :)
@NightmareBarbieDoll I love that the ladies of the 40's and 50's dressed like ladies and always took pride in their appearance. They always set the hair, wore makeup, and would never wear pj's or sweatpants to the grocery store. ;-)
@tclemente2010 I would go to a stylist and see about having it cut into layers that will help it fall properly to begin with...then styles will be more likely to hold. Brushing is very important for vintage techniques as well. Keep practicing.
Is this the same technique used for the Andrews sisters hairstyles of the 1940s. I would love to try that hairstyle but I cannot find a hair tutorial on that particular hairstyle for the life of me.
THANK YOU for taking the time to post all these. What about a close-up how-to-section your hair tutorial for codl set or pincurls?? My sections are always too big..I want perfect, Ava Gardner hair! I have to fuss too much with the curls to hide my crappy sectioning...Also- I have naturally wavy hair- should I let it dry with the wave in it, or blow it straight??Thanks to your hair instruction, I was the hit of my daughter's 1950's night dance..LOL.
@debbiechickie5 use smaller sections. haha. I do not pay much attention to sectioning on my own hair. And I still get good results. I just sort of eyeball it.
Lisa: we need more up-close tutoorials on sectioning..I cannot figure out hwo to sectin my hair, especially in the back. My hairs naturally curly: do I blow it out straight or dry it with the wave it it?? Because of natural curl, it hides my poor sets, which would look perfect if I could section it better..RSVP. Love your videos. :)
@markjroberts43 sectioning is not something I typically pay much attention to, when I am styling my own hair. When I am styling someone else, I can be much more detailed. But it is difficult for me to block and section my own hair. Therefore I just gage it by sight and experience. If you are not getting good results from your current method, just make alterations.
@LisaFreemontStreet i love them too, can you explain a bit more please! i feel like i've mastered pin curls and victory rolls but i just can't get my fringe right!
i love ur hair color! I want to go that blonde, what did they do at the salon to get your hair that light? im scared of my hair going orange since my hair is dark brown(not my natural color though!) also I find when I try to do curls and things with my hair the curl just falls because my hair is soo thick ahh frustrating what do you suggest? ^.^
@danaapple1200 This was well over a year ago and I did not keep my hair this light for long. I had to go back to red because the upkeep was very expensive. I did not want any root showing so I had to get them done every 30 days and that was about 50.00 per visit....so keep that in mind,
@danaapple1200 An experienced colorist can get your hair this light w/out turning it orange. It turns orange if they don't left the color out completely and tone it. My hair was dyed red when I colored it and that is far more difficult to lift than brown.
@LisaFreemontStreet thats what I thought I thnk they didn't tone it enough but I think the lady was scared of frying my hair! where can you buy those hotsticks that you use?
I'm just wondering, would it be easy to go from pin curls to this style? Also, what size barrel do your curlers have? The ringlets look pretty tight from here :) (before you brush them out of course!)
@Mercofjoy My curlers are an old Clairol set I got at Wal Mart. Pincurls actually work better for these Victory Rolls since the curl itself is sturdier.
i love this song who singa it anh oh and good hair style lmao it looks freakn good my mom is trying to copy it comment me back so we can talk about hair styles
@CJo582 This is actually called a 'reverse roll'...it became the 'Victory Roll' during the mid 1940's...since some people still call them reverse rolls, I included that in the title.
If only my hair could obey me like that! Thank you for the tips! My hair is right below my breasts. What would I do with the bottom section of my hair? Would it still look good with tousled ringlets?
@ashlee22559 thanks...either put it in a snood, a low side ponytail, or yes, the ringlets will look fine too. :) You could also do a gibson roll...lots of options!
thank you for this video. i am getting married this coming fall and the wedding will be 50's inspired thyme. this is the perfect hair style ive been looking for

@kitsuneateagreeley this was one of my first videos and I did not know how to stretch out the text using Windows Moviemaker, as of yet...I would pull the video but it seems to be popular so hopefully you can utilize the 'pause' option for this one...;-) My recent videos are much easier to follow...
I used this valuable tutorial when I did the hair for the 1940s heroine of 'American Smile', and I found it really works and gives a lovely authentic look. The hairstyle looks lovely from all angles - perfect for filming. Thanks so much for posting.
Thank you SO much for this tutorial! I used some of it to get the old hairs looking mighty fine when the hubs took me out to dinner last weekend! I loved the style so much! I feel I should share, I got a lovely random comment on my hair in the restaurant, and part of that compliment should really go to you! Thanks again so much!
I LOVE your tutorials! I've been a cosmetologist for 6 years now and unfortunately I haven't had a lot of opportunities to much vintage hair. It's to bad ladies aren't still wearing these styles. I'd love to see you do "finger waves" created by pin curls. =) Thanks for teaching me so many great techniques!
Thanks!! I'm going to try this hair for my friend's 40's-50's party! :)

@xxPOISONEDcupcakeXX I know you didn't ask me, but I have really long hair as well like to the middle of my back and when i do rolls i usually curl my hair with hot rollers, or if i do a pin curl set it's already curled or i do a super easy roll in the back [ i'll try to make a video] i hope that helped! but Lisa's gibson tutorial is waayyyy awesome as well!
yocorrocontrajeras 1 year ago
You should use the Louis Prima version of that old black magic next time. It sounds really similar but I think keely smith has one of the classiest voices of all time. And thanks for the video I always have a hard time with victory rolls.
RANAE30 1 year ago
@RANAE30 I've used a lot of Louis Prima on this channel...I just like this modern version of Black Magic...:)

When ever i use sponge rollers, and i sleep with them in my hair, When i wake up they are half ways out, ill roll it to the top of my head and when i wake up they are half ways off, is that normal?
redmicmuf 1 year ago
@redmicmuf Chances are, they didnt slide down until the curl was already set. So no biggie. And also, try sleeping w/ a light chiffon scarf over the top of the set...this will prevent the slipping somewhat as well. :) Today's video uses sponge rollers from an overnight set, actually.
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
@LisaFreemontStreet okay, thanks!!! i will try the scarf!!
Love your videos!

Thanks to your tutorial I finally was able to do this hairstyle!

I have a problem of whenever I curl my hair, when I take out the hair curler, the curls simply fall straight down, with maybe a little curve at the bottom. Do you have any idea how to fix this??
Kittypoof12 1 year ago
@Kittypoof12 try spraying your hair damp and using sponge rollers instead. The curls will take alot better than hot rollers.
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
@LisaFreemontStreet Thanks!! I'll definitely try it!! :)

Why don't young women coiff and makeup like that anymore? I'd go straight if they did.
rasputin63 1 year ago 43
@rasputin63 lol funniest comment ever! Actually, lots of us DO dress up like this regularly. The rockabilly scene is full of lovely vintage styled ladies. But I wouldnt try to sway you one way or another. :)
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
@rasputin63 haha what don't u like about most modern women that dress in whatever contemporary style they do? ^.^
NightmareBarbieDoll 1 year ago
@NightmareBarbieDoll I love that the ladies of the 40's and 50's dressed like ladies and always took pride in their appearance. They always set the hair, wore makeup, and would never wear pj's or sweatpants to the grocery store. ;-)

Mk I have really thick and frizzy, wavey, terrible stubborn hair...How can I get it like this?
I have tried so many ways and the curls fall out..pinned,,,ironed..etc. They just go limp and nappy looking..
tclemente2010 1 year ago
@tclemente2010 I would go to a stylist and see about having it cut into layers that will help it fall properly to begin with...then styles will be more likely to hold. Brushing is very important for vintage techniques as well. Keep practicing.
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
The only video the actually got the point! Thanks!:)
vivalabri17 1 year ago
Is this the same technique used for the Andrews sisters hairstyles of the 1940s. I would love to try that hairstyle but I cannot find a hair tutorial on that particular hairstyle for the life of me.
LovedbyKenubus 1 year ago
@LovedbyKenubus if I remember correctly, they had really big hair in the 40's. :) But I'll be happy to try somethingif you should be a photo.

THANK YOU for taking the time to post all these. What about a close-up how-to-section your hair tutorial for codl set or pincurls?? My sections are always too big..I want perfect, Ava Gardner hair! I have to fuss too much with the curls to hide my crappy sectioning...Also- I have naturally wavy hair- should I let it dry with the wave in it, or blow it straight??Thanks to your hair instruction, I was the hit of my daughter's 1950's night dance..LOL.
debbiechickie5 1 year ago
@debbiechickie5 use smaller sections. haha. I do not pay much attention to sectioning on my own hair. And I still get good results. I just sort of eyeball it.
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
Lisa: we need more up-close tutoorials on sectioning..I cannot figure out hwo to sectin my hair, especially in the back. My hairs naturally curly: do I blow it out straight or dry it with the wave it it?? Because of natural curl, it hides my poor sets, which would look perfect if I could section it better..RSVP. Love your videos. :)
markjroberts43 1 year ago
@markjroberts43 sectioning is not something I typically pay much attention to, when I am styling my own hair. When I am styling someone else, I can be much more detailed. But it is difficult for me to block and section my own hair. Therefore I just gage it by sight and experience. If you are not getting good results from your current method, just make alterations.

How do you get your bangs like that?
5909now 1 year ago
@5909now just curl, lift and spray. Easy peasy. :)
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
@LisaFreemontStreet i love them too, can you explain a bit more please! i feel like i've mastered pin curls and victory rolls but i just can't get my fringe right!
ifellinlovewithadead 1 year ago
i love ur hair color! I want to go that blonde, what did they do at the salon to get your hair that light? im scared of my hair going orange since my hair is dark brown(not my natural color though!) also I find when I try to do curls and things with my hair the curl just falls because my hair is soo thick ahh frustrating what do you suggest? ^.^
danaapple1200 1 year ago
@danaapple1200 This was well over a year ago and I did not keep my hair this light for long. I had to go back to red because the upkeep was very expensive. I did not want any root showing so I had to get them done every 30 days and that was about 50.00 per visit....so keep that in mind,
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
@danaapple1200 An experienced colorist can get your hair this light w/out turning it orange. It turns orange if they don't left the color out completely and tone it. My hair was dyed red when I colored it and that is far more difficult to lift than brown.
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
@LisaFreemontStreet thats what I thought I thnk they didn't tone it enough but I think the lady was scared of frying my hair! where can you buy those hotsticks that you use?
danaapple1200 1 year ago
I love south pacific. I am super horrible at victory rolls. This is a really cute style.
mfrazer334 1 year ago
This looks amazing!
I'm just wondering, would it be easy to go from pin curls to this style? Also, what size barrel do your curlers have? The ringlets look pretty tight from here :) (before you brush them out of course!)
Mercofjoy 1 year ago
@Mercofjoy My curlers are an old Clairol set I got at Wal Mart. Pincurls actually work better for these Victory Rolls since the curl itself is sturdier.

Hi! Why are these "reverse" victory roles? I'm confused, and trying to get this look rather than go to a stylist and pay more money for the look. ty!
CJo582 1 year ago
@CJo582 This is actually called a 'reverse roll'...it became the 'Victory Roll' during the mid 1940's...since some people still call them reverse rolls, I included that in the title.
LisaFreemontStreet 1 year ago
@LisaFreemontStreet Beauty & Brains, awesome! Thanks for hte info!

If only my hair could obey me like that! Thank you for the tips! My hair is right below my breasts. What would I do with the bottom section of my hair? Would it still look good with tousled ringlets?
ashlee22559 1 year ago
@ashlee22559 thanks...either put it in a snood, a low side ponytail, or yes, the ringlets will look fine too. :) You could also do a gibson roll...lots of options!

I LOVE your tutorials! I've been a cosmetologist for 6 years now and unfortunately I haven't had a lot of opportunities to much vintage hair. It's to bad ladies aren't still wearing these styles. I'd love to see you do "finger waves" created by pin curls. =) Thanks for teaching me so many great techniques!
shawnisparis 1 year ago
That is on my 'to do' list actually. I love that look so much! Much better than a traditional fingerwave.
