@Timzack Elasticity, while a microeconomic subject, is taught as a basic building block in both economics classes in a community college, kinda like how you can't talk about either Micro/Macro without going into supply/demand first (and we both know elasticity is deeply tied to the demand curve).
I'm British and he sounds pretty American in this scene to me. ;) Maybe it's some sort of blend of both?
For me Stringer/Idris is the Brit who has the most convincing American accent in the whole of The Wire, whereas McNulty makes a mess of his from time to time and Carcetti's is well... the less said about that the better haha.
As a commerce student I fucking loved this mini plot arc. My crowning moment I think was when Stringer asked his professor what to do and before the professor even opened his mouth I said the exact same answer in similar words out loud.
My understanding was that macro-economics was the study of the economy as a whole (Keynes, Friedman et al on money supply, government, growth, unemployment etc), not of how individual markets function. What's your's?
If he had a code & honor, stringer bell would have been the ultimate gangster.. too bad he didn't had the chance to use his smartness in a real business

I loved this scene too. It was such a surprise to find out that Stringer took business classes and tried to implement the things he learned in his day job.
That scene just goes to show you how seriously Stringer Bell took the drug game, because you can bet he took what he learned here and tried to apply it to the drug game
This shows how seriously he values education, not the drug game. It should be apparent that Stringer Bell is not serious about "drugs" as a way of life. He is ambitious. Drugs are a means to an end for Bell. A product if you will. Drugs are a commodity. Fungible by their very nature. Bell sees this. This becomes evident later on in the show, as he branches off into real estate. If he could achieve similar returns selling oranges or air conditioners he would.
I abhor internet shorthand (ttyl, lmao, etc), but this would be a definite lol.
For while I would consider myself autodidactic, I do not study economics, per se, in my spare time. Apparently you are unaware that many women prefer intelligent men, often to the exclusion of others. Add to that the fact that I earn a not insignificant living and am but of 24 years and I cannot understand why you would think that I have trouble with women.

I did not claim any insight into the drug game. I am an investment banker focusing on all aspects of the real estate market. I have a thorough background in finance and economics. This experience is what I brought to bear in my earlier comment.
@ChadMedellin yeah you sound real smart??? never sold a bag of nouthing........dont give a danm where you at, aint no money like dope money, string tried to change, occupation, but he was what he was,a dope boy, try to tell BUSH family they dont need to be over ther in the desert, and see if they dont smack yo ass
@ChadMedellin I gotta disagree with you, but only slightly. He values education, but I don't think he's very cognizant of economics even though he is certainly interested in it. Notice how in every episode that shows him in class, after he learns a new econ term (e.g. market saturation) he goes immediately to his soldiers and uses the word. Almost like he's showing off his 'smarts'. Not unlike a 5 year old who heard a new curse word and is showing it off to his friends to make him seem tougher.
@SclafaniBagni I think he already understood the CONCEPTS of economics from the streets, hence, in class it shows him answering the question using basic street terminology, to me it shows he is VERY cognizant of the key components of economics. What I think the class is doing for him is giving him the "language" of the business and providing him the terminology for concepts that he understood but never had a name for. You don't build a successful drug empire without economic skills. Truth.
ROFL, you gotta be kidding me.... I love the wire, seen the whole series almost twice now, and i never for a second thought he was British, this is the first time I hear this :D You probably knew beforehand, which was why it was so apparent to you... or I'm just a really lame observer :)
lmao, i wonder if the students next to him realize their sitting beside a murderous drug kingpin. Imagine getting paired up with him for a paper... scary.
Not to nitpick, but elasticity is more relevant to microeconomics, and not macro, which deals with economics on a larger scale. In terms of Stringer's locally run business, we're talking microeconomics=)
It's pretty embarassing how he just blatantly regurgitates it during the community meeting. None of them are going to understand and it's all so elementary to begin with.

The reason he sounds british is cause he's talking with a ghetto accent.
How do the two correlate?
British people also don't fully prenounce the 'r' in desire. They kind of say it like "dee-si-yuh'.
Ghetto accent kind of has the same thing going on, too, alhough the r is a little bit more prominent.
Anyway, it's funny to see how people more accustomed to British accent hear british, while people who are used to ghetto accent think it's just fine.
