The narrator sounds like the man from classic WCVB-TV Channel 5. You would see him in the Sunday Matinee on Channel 5 back in the 70's. I wish I knew his name.
I remember this from when I was a kid and we left Massachusetts in 1981. Based on the accent, it appears the Mars is somewhere in the Boston Metro area. It sounds kinda MetroWest, but I may be wrong.
@tanrat7 You guys mean nothing like growing up in New England in the 70's- 80's. WLVI 56 and Ch25 Boston, was holding it down when it came to our old school goodness. I love the Snipets and Mr. Big Toyland commercials. So friggin CLASSIC. :)
I can't believe that I remembered the words to this commercial almost verbatim when I haven't seen it since I was about 6! Some 28 years ago! I thought it was Balthazar from Maahz eating all kinds of candy bahhs! Oh well!
I loved these simpler times when someone could throw on a goofy Martian outfit and do a PSA and use real cheesy props!
Anyone know if the school lunch one with the guy in the lion suit (or some other creature) is around? Pizza! Burgers! Deezert!!!! That one.
This guy also did an ad as Roger the Carrot that is way more goofy. I used to see it on CH.25 in Boston back in the late 70s and early 80s. You could even send away for the Roger the Carrot poster.
You just gave me back a chunk of my childhood! I remember this being aired on WCVB (Channel 5) during commercial breaks in the equally-odd (and low-budget)kids' TV show "Jabberwocky"...anyone remember THAT show? Filmed locally, just like this commercial, I think! Thanks again for posting this, I'm fav'ing it!
I remember this. Thanks, I've been looking for it. I forgot how lame "Mars" looked (what, Mars is just a dark room with burlap sacks on the ground?)
I love how he screws up his line, saying "It's good -- It's better than good, it's yummy and not bad!" You can imagine the director either letting it slide because he was either fed up with this clown getting it wrong like 50 times in a row or because he just didn't care. Priceless! - Ron ^*^
I definately remember this on Channel 56 with the cartoon host Uncle Dale who also did the voice overs with oscilattor effects for the Creature Double Feature and Creature Feature on Saturdays. Damn, TV was so much better back then
does anyone have these commercials? i am looking for the charleston chew commercial with the three kings.its so chewy louie.or a tv program called drawing from nature with captain bob cottle.thanks!!
I can only reiterate what everyone else has been saying about this classic memory of my Massachusetts childhood. Thank you! Thank you so much! I have been looking for this forever!
Thank you so much for that. Those words have been burned in my memory for 25 years and it was great to see the video once again. I *think* it might have been on 56 (WLVI), since I watched lots of "Creature Double Feature" and it seems like this might have been one of the spots.
I grew up in the Boston area in the early 80s. This is to me the crown jewel of old school TV fodder. He's got a great Boston accent "Candy Bahs". Let's find the Sha-Na-Na sewing spot.

The irony of a flaming gay Martian saying "by only eating candy bars we don't know what we miss" is staggering
Angryjolly 3 years ago
I love how he says "Maahs" and "Candy Baahs" I used to think this was a woman when I was a kid. I guess I didn't know what gay was yet.
fuzzyspaniel 3 years ago
That's not gay, it's just a raging Boston accent. Not that he doesn't have that lispy gay quality on top of it all...

And yeah, that ad is definitely from WCVB...that's their old announcer at the end.

These spots were on WLVI channel 56, Modern day UPN 38. If it's even UPN anymore, I don't think so.
ryguy270 3 years ago
No, they were on WCVB channel 5 early on Saturday mornings during Jabberwocky, Barbapapa, Super Friends, etc.
Also, WSBK 38 became UPN-38. WLVI 56 became WB-56
