Actually it does, it is on the end of the lens. You actually focus by twisting the end of the lens.

I'm grossly disappointed with my 400d. Paid for it 2 months ago... but it's been off for warranty twice because Canon never fixed it the first time. It shipped with a dead pixel in the LCD AND a dead pixel in the sensor unit. Will be almost three months by the time I get it back. I REALLY wish I bought the Nikon now. My 400D is a piece of junk. :(

Well, i'd say the Canon. It clearly has most value for money.

Since the D40x has no focus motor, you can only use little lenses, whereas the Canon is compatible with over 60 lenses - not couting the 3rd party makes!

Also, it has a self-cleaning sensor unit. A really good feature.

Go to your dealer, try both of them out, and buy the one that fits you best. Good luck with your new camera.

The 400d is bigger than the D40 and D40x. The D60 which Nikon is releasing end of February/Beginning od March is going to be even smaller. The reason for the smaller body size is the lack of an auto-focus motor, which in turn limits the amount of lenses you have to choose from.

You're right, the sensor cleaning system does just about nothing. Buddy of mine who has the Rebel XTi had the exact same mentality as the guy before. "The integrated sensor cleaner will keep it safe. Hahaha, look how cool the sensor looks!"

He ended up paying Canon to clean it because the automatic cleaning didn't do anything.
