Artillery is never intended to stand up to direct fire from front line units, they're usually in the rear and escorted by a screen, which is what the video shows. Look at current artillery practice.

Johnny Ridden, for example, shot down 100 enemies in a single battle before his apparent demise, more than Amuro ever shot down in the course of the entire series. Char destroyed two warships singlehandedly at the Battle of Loum armed with just a standard Zaku.. Gato...they don't call him the Nightmare of Solomon for nothing.

You know, aside from his piloting abilities Norris is actually a pretty bland character IMHO. For as much as Ghinius is condemned for being 1-dimensional and shallow, Norris really isn't any better (especially if you factor out the Gouf Custom). I understand his appeal (stoic Zeon aces with cool custom suits have instant appeal to the UC fanbase I've seen), but take away everything related to his piloting and he'd be the most forgettable character in the show.
I do really enjoy watching this series for it's realism. I mean really, why call the gundam series the 'Real Robot Genre' when things like Innovators,SEED/Berserk mode and Newtypes exists? This is what Real Robot Genre should represent, not one Gundam unit blasting over 9000 enemies withing a few minutes. On a side note though, the reason I hate SEED and Destiny is because of how much potential it had yet Fukuda screwed it up. Really, the mecha designs are nice but character development sucks

Atleast the gundams in seed were awesome action figures. Destiny was the same lame ass characters and new charactes who sucked just as much as the one before them. Also they preach about "not Fighting" but kira was blowing up stuff up and all he ever does is fight. I understand why he is called Kira Jesus Yamato Christ now.

@Rownery heh...goth..I think you mean Gouf.. and because resources were stretched. They had cannibalized almost all other mobile suits for that monster Obsolice, or however it's spelt. The only ones that weren't cannibalized were the flying goufs and doms that would serve as it's escort. Like fighter planes escorting a bomber, that's why they only sent out Norris in his custom Gouf, corse the custom gouf is worth 3 normal goufs, but then again the bullets are only comming from one place not 3 D:

My favorite fight in all the Gundam battles I watched. Really showed how good ace pilots really are (instead of having psychic teenagers zipping around in their mobile suits like wasps)
@lightningstrife3 I thought it made the battle more intense and epic that the only ace was a enemy. That was interesting. Also I really liked how the GUNDAMS were not super weapons . And that a single gouf with a mounted gatling gun held off the whole 08th ms team, and they were unable to protect the guntanks. Even with Beam weapons it didn't make a difference.
@lightningstrife3 meh... I don't mind the Newtype plot. As a new Gundam fan, I found 08th to be outstanding and this battle certainly ranks in the top three for me in terms of all the series I've watched. However, I'm not put-off by new types or highly agile mobile suits... if there's one thing I've come to appreciate about the UC timeline, it's that every series at least retains a REAL science to its mobile suits and weaponry in general. That's all I really ask for when it comes to mecha.
Cause maybe...for once, the main characters in 8th MS team ARENT Newtypes, Coordinators, or Innovades (is that what Setsuna turns out to be, cant remember)?

Yes, if you look up amuro vs ramba ral, you can see it. Or you can torrent the series and a few others. My personal favorite are 08th MS Team, 0083, 0080, and Wing.
Seriously would not want to be them. and the second one that's Oil spurting out. There's not enough people in the cockpit to spurt that much blood out. Plus if he did impale them with his sword Blood wouldn't have came out. That's just Oil.
I love this series! Like people have said before, the realistic elements to the battles are great. The mobile suits aren't all-powerful and there is only one true "ace" in the entire mini-series. The battles weren't meant to look pretty which is what makes it a relief from the flashy, unrealistic battles of other Gundam serieses.
And also, Norris was the man! He became one of my favorite pilots in any series with these 11 minutes alone. His Gouf Custom looks cool but I would've loved to have seen him pilot a Kampfer.
I think it's better this way. No all powerful god gundams painted all the colors of the rainbow, and every other pilot is an ace.
I don't think it's feasible that one man can fend of scores of mobile suits all by himself, powerful gundam or not. The realism is what makes this particular series so intense and lifelike.
But yeah, he could, but that wouldn't make it interesting.
That's one reason why I rank 08th as one of my favorite Gundam series.
Too often, they've gone too far into the "Super Robot" model of mecha series. What originally made Gundam different was that they were intended to be mass produced for warfare, not Marty Stu fantasies.

Again, there the Gundam's arent God, as you you recall, Heero went toe to toe with Wufie while he was piloting a Leo, in GW, the pilots are just horribly plot armored is all. And yes, the bright colors could be perceived as a way to taunt or attract the enemy.

Colorful gundams aren't conducive to military strategy. You have to put camouflage into consideration, but it's a bit more understandable in Gundam Wing, being that they're vigilantes and all.

One of the Gundams can, the Wing Gundam, not all of them. Don't talk to me about military stragety, it would also be strategic to draw your enemies toward something that can hold it's own, and let the weaker units pick off the enemy while the stronger one keeps them at bay, or they could just be that confident in the RX-78-2 to begin with. If you're looking to lecture someone on strategy, go find someone else, I'm already sound in the subject. You don't have to always put camo into consideration

If u are talking about the original gundam that amuro piloted, then the color do present a tactical disadvantaged. Tomino orignially wanted the gundam to be greyish white to represent a color of a 8 ft 80 ton war machine, but Sunrise insisted the gundam to be painted in a vivid color, since the Super Giant Robot theme rule the 70s , while Tomino wanted to break away from that trend. The gundam patriot color could be use a signal to rise moral like the Hyushki gold paint job in zeta.
Ez8 has to be one of my favorite gundam types ever, it just looks cool to me, not the best looking, but it gets the job done. 08th MS team is my favorite series

Norris = Teh Shit, and it's not even ruined by him being a newtype or anything like that, he's just a superb soldier. No overpowered teenagers, no wierd magical SeeD powers, just VonRichtofen level piloting skills.
This pwns Seed easily, no question. Let's see Kira Yamato do what Norris did, low on ammo, outnumbered, the works. He'd probably whine about the war being wrong, and how everybody should be friends, and... Boom!
Wrong is a good story the character drive the plot....in gundam seed kira's personality/skills/and primary motive would change wildly depending on what the story needed at the time
Examples:Kira had killed at least 20 pilots before he killed nicol.....but only then did he cry about killing an enemy pilot also keep in mind how godly kira was before he was suddenly defeated by shinn, Shinn should have been invincible but then he was easily dispatched by athrun who in turn was no match for kira
Kira had never met Nicol....he was crying over killing an enemy pilot at this point he had allready killed Athrun's friend Miguel and I believe he killed that desert tiger guy (my favorite character in the serries) who he only shouted once for (even though the freakin guy fed him and protected him) Shinn beating Kira wasnt so bad becasue he was berserking and using Kira's weaknesses the problem was that shinn became a push over with no story afterwards
(continued) the problem in Seed is inconsistancy. The scenes werent bad when viewed sperately but made no sense when you looked at a character history. Kira cant cry over Nicol when he hasnt blinked about killing before. And shinn shouldnt have been brushed aside aftterwards if he had skill I dont hate the C.E. they both have their moments. It just feels like the writers didnt focus on character who do things according to their own personality/backstory and instead changed them for the plot
That's an opinion then, so I won't argue it. However, calling a character out for being driven by the plot is a bit silly. There are characters where it's a bit much, but Kira isn't one of them
It doesn't matter if Kira never met Nicol. He saw how much his death affected Athrun, which prompted his emotional response.

In this series, it's more, MORE realistic than all the others, where beating 3 Guntanks is nothing to other pilots like Amuro and Kira. 8th MS Team was the most realistic Gundam series ever, I mean they had trouble taking out normal Zakus. But that's also the same reason why it's the best series, because it took a more realistic approach.

That may be so but you gotta consider this man isnt exactly using a light suit plus hes carring a heavy gat, so hes gotta do it right the 1st time or hes shot and when you think about the fact that hes got 3 tanks & 3 human types with a command truck so their not in the dark, plus he's the only 1 on the feild so they wont be distrated by other enemies in turn thats alot of fire power pointed at you. This man has his hands full.
The Gouf is not a heavy-class Mobile suit. The portable minigun might make it a bit heavier but other then that it's a fast-attack one designed for close combat warfare due to it's lack of long range weaponry.
The Gouf, without the gatling arm weighs around 77 tons loaded. In contrast the Guntank fully loaded weighs around 80 tons and Shiro's Ground Combat Gundam Ez8 weighs around 71-72 tons fully loaded.
The Gouf may not be a heavy class mobile suite, however, it isn't any lighter than those he is fighting.
In many ways his mobile suit is inferior. The catch is that it is a close combat MS and the combat is in urban warfare. Plus, Norris is a better pilot than those on the 08th MS Team.
Seed wasn't so bad until they smashed in so many dialogs, repeated battles and put up a crappy ending. Damn philosophies got overboard but I still like it, haha.
This is how an epic battle should be. A true work of art on how they managed to create an absolutely perfect action packed battle. It really shows how an MS ace is skilled but not to the point of being a one maned army.
I based my judgment on the original Japanese version as well. A predictable plot, one and two dimensional characters, and the mecha... WAY too shiny. Digital imaging is not the way to go for Gundam. Does anyone else think the series should've ended with Turn A?
I love Turn-A, and I'd have liked it followed by something not like SEED. But for all that it's not my cup of tea, SEED was at least a commercial success. Gundam needs one of those now and then.
Norris is my favorite Gundam pilot. He sacrifices his life in an attempt to save all of his friends.

I love this series! Like people have said before, the realistic elements to the battles are great. The mobile suits aren't all-powerful and there is only one true "ace" in the entire mini-series. The battles weren't meant to look pretty which is what makes it a relief from the flashy, unrealistic battles of other Gundam serieses.

I think it's better this way. No all powerful god gundams painted all the colors of the rainbow, and every other pilot is an ace.
I don't think it's feasible that one man can fend of scores of mobile suits all by himself, powerful gundam or not. The realism is what makes this particular series so intense and lifelike.
But yeah, he could, but that wouldn't make it interesting.

That's one reason why I rank 08th as one of my favorite Gundam series.
Too often, they've gone too far into the "Super Robot" model of mecha series. What originally made Gundam different was that they were intended to be mass produced for warfare, not Marty Stu fantasies.

Again, there the Gundam's arent God, as you you recall, Heero went toe to toe with Wufie while he was piloting a Leo, in GW, the pilots are just horribly plot armored is all. And yes, the bright colors could be perceived as a way to taunt or attract the enemy.

Colorful gundams aren't conducive to military strategy. You have to put camouflage into consideration, but it's a bit more understandable in Gundam Wing, being that they're vigilantes and all.

One of the Gundams can, the Wing Gundam, not all of them. Don't talk to me about military stragety, it would also be strategic to draw your enemies toward something that can hold it's own, and let the weaker units pick off the enemy while the stronger one keeps them at bay, or they could just be that confident in the RX-78-2 to begin with. If you're looking to lecture someone on strategy, go find someone else, I'm already sound in the subject. You don't have to always put camo into consideration

If u are talking about the original gundam that amuro piloted, then the color do present a tactical disadvantaged. Tomino orignially wanted the gundam to be greyish white to represent a color of a 8 ft 80 ton war machine, but Sunrise insisted the gundam to be painted in a vivid color, since the Super Giant Robot theme rule the 70s , while Tomino wanted to break away from that trend. The gundam patriot color could be use a signal to rise moral like the Hyushki gold paint job in zeta.

Wrong is a good story the character drive the plot....in gundam seed kira's personality/skills/and primary motive would change wildly depending on what the story needed at the time
Examples:Kira had killed at least 20 pilots before he killed nicol.....but only then did he cry about killing an enemy pilot also keep in mind how godly kira was before he was suddenly defeated by shinn, Shinn should have been invincible but then he was easily dispatched by athrun who in turn was no match for kira

Nicol was a close ally of Athrun, Kira's best friend. Of course he was going to be more upset.
Shinn had the drop on Kira and was at his best at the time. Kira was also holding back.

Kira had never met Nicol....he was crying over killing an enemy pilot at this point he had allready killed Athrun's friend Miguel and I believe he killed that desert tiger guy (my favorite character in the serries) who he only shouted once for (even though the freakin guy fed him and protected him) Shinn beating Kira wasnt so bad becasue he was berserking and using Kira's weaknesses the problem was that shinn became a push over with no story afterwards

(continued) the problem in Seed is inconsistancy. The scenes werent bad when viewed sperately but made no sense when you looked at a character history. Kira cant cry over Nicol when he hasnt blinked about killing before. And shinn shouldnt have been brushed aside aftterwards if he had skill I dont hate the C.E. they both have their moments. It just feels like the writers didnt focus on character who do things according to their own personality/backstory and instead changed them for the plot

That's an opinion then, so I won't argue it. However, calling a character out for being driven by the plot is a bit silly. There are characters where it's a bit much, but Kira isn't one of them
It doesn't matter if Kira never met Nicol. He saw how much his death affected Athrun, which prompted his emotional response.
Every Gundam series has inconstancies. Some are bigger than others, but they're still there.

Seed wasnt my favorite cause Kira would change depending on what the story needed He would randomly switch from Berserker, to Emo, To Pacifest Like i said i liked parts of seed but never liked kira much and it was the nail of doom when suddenly all the plots converged and Rau said that kira was the ultimate being not my cup of tea but still Seed wasnt horrible its way better than most serries I just thought it wasnt the best gundam

The scriptwriters wouldn't have had Karen say "He's goin' right for the crew!" if they wanted oil sprayed all over the place.
08th MS Team is the most realistic when it comes to war and death, they wouldn't skimp out on it.
And if you really want to get technical compare the colors of the civilian's blood in the Reunion and the colors here. they're the same.

In this series, it's more, MORE realistic than all the others, where beating 3 Guntanks is nothing to other pilots like Amuro and Kira. 8th MS Team was the most realistic Gundam series ever, I mean they had trouble taking out normal Zakus. But that's also the same reason why it's the best series, because it took a more realistic approach.

That may be so but you gotta consider this man isnt exactly using a light suit plus hes carring a heavy gat, so hes gotta do it right the 1st time or hes shot and when you think about the fact that hes got 3 tanks & 3 human types with a command truck so their not in the dark, plus he's the only 1 on the feild so they wont be distrated by other enemies in turn thats alot of fire power pointed at you. This man has his hands full.

The Gouf is not a heavy-class Mobile suit. The portable minigun might make it a bit heavier but other then that it's a fast-attack one designed for close combat warfare due to it's lack of long range weaponry.

The Gouf, without the gatling arm weighs around 77 tons loaded. In contrast the Guntank fully loaded weighs around 80 tons and Shiro's Ground Combat Gundam Ez8 weighs around 71-72 tons fully loaded.
The Gouf may not be a heavy class mobile suite, however, it isn't any lighter than those he is fighting.
In many ways his mobile suit is inferior. The catch is that it is a close combat MS and the combat is in urban warfare. Plus, Norris is a better pilot than those on the 08th MS Team.

This is how an epic battle should be. A true work of art on how they managed to create an absolutely perfect action packed battle. It really shows how an MS ace is skilled but not to the point of being a one maned army.

I based my judgment on the original Japanese version as well. A predictable plot, one and two dimensional characters, and the mecha... WAY too shiny. Digital imaging is not the way to go for Gundam. Does anyone else think the series should've ended with Turn A?

I love Turn-A, and I'd have liked it followed by something not like SEED. But for all that it's not my cup of tea, SEED was at least a commercial success. Gundam needs one of those now and then.
