  • im thinking of buying this one to watch 1080p movies from my external hard drive,

    should i buy it?

or can my PS3 do the job?

  • this player is shit

  • Very good. I have a PS3 and simply hook up my Western Digital Passport HardDrive, to the usb port on the console. Then I go to videos and watch content from my external WD HardDrive. You can also browse through photos and music on the hardrive. So the PS3 kind of acts like the WD media player. The only reason I might consider purchasing one though is because you can view HD content from the passport harddrive on this media player. Still, good video.

  • This could play 1080p full hd mvk's, its amazing :D

  • im thinkn of gettin this. does anyone know where i can download mkv movies?

  • You should of used your xbox 360 to stream your media and saved the money :/

  • @andyroo89 the xbox can only support a few formats, the WD media player supports dozens.

  • @VasiliyVorobets911 I am using tversity with xbox 360 and it plays all formats well the ones I am using does. I have no problems atm.

  • I have heard that this machine struggles with DTS audio, either convert the audio to AAC or run the sound through external speakers... i dont own one, just thought it might be helpful to pass on what i've just read.

would love to know if you can crop the images without having to re-encode though...

  • its not struggle, it's not supported.

It's a reason why it is so cheap. They can put support for that in though, then the price will go up for using licenses.

The good part is DTS can be enabled by using optical port.

  • It is not the reason, stop believing in everything you read on internet, and you'll be fine (some of the reviews state that the reason is no int.HDD lol) DTS is passed through the optical out and should be enough, because, let's face it, if you own a hdd tv/projector and a hd player - you WILL have a DD/DTS receiver 5.1/6.1/7.1 or whatever. I feel sorry for those who will output the sound through WD TVs analog stereo outs :(

  • Ha, that's good to know.

And now you can feel sorry for me!

*Even use Scart-Tulp Adapter to watch it on our TV's, But soon an HD one will come, just wait and see!*

  • PS3 would handle the DTS alot better than this thing anyway, wouldn't it?

  • what the point of demoing hd player with a dvd-ripped content, you genius?

  • Calm down. Its not as if this was recorded in HD anyway, so it doesnt matter.

  • Picture quality is as good as the file itself Downloaded a hd video and watched at 1080 looked fantastic

  • please, someone tell me: is picture quality same as .mkv from PC?

  • is this good for anime ? .mkv and ogm or mp4 files like mkv or ogm have multiple audio tracks japanese/english can you switch it with this?

    or .sub subtitles?

planning on buying one so need to know

  • can you zoom/crop the videos?

  • This thing does not produce 1080p, it just will reproduce what it's on the USB Device connected to it. Doesn't it?

  • it outputs 1080p video files...such as MKV files...so yes..1080P through HDMI to your tv.

  • damn

i need the sun glasses watching this VID

  • This player accepts USB devices, will it accept a USB DVD drive?

  • Unfortunately is does not, yet. Look out for the firmware update this week. WD will be providing a total of 40 improvements and fixes and new features.

  • So I bought this and unfortunately, I'm returning it back. I have quite a few .ts files and mkv's that either did not play or did play but poorly. Word of caution to the anime folks, those normal and high-res mkv's will play but with no subtitles. I know it's been mentioned before but what's the point of buying this if I still have to re-convert the files to either burn the subs (Making it a hardsub) or changing it to a .srt file? Blu-ray files suffered from artifacts making it unwatchable.

  • Thanks for the note on anime.

  • That shows you don't seem to know about the basics on the HD playback devices. If you're interested in HD and its playback you would have kept yourself well informed prior bursting out with a unqulified comment such as this. The fact some MKVs play back poorly is based on the fact that they are encoded poorly by the people who created them. And there is a freware app that does fix almost all of the issues. Google for MKV2VOB, also useful to convert MKVs for PS3. Firmware update coming this week.

  • Not sure if this comment is aimed at me but if I'm to pay $100 for a device to watch media files, why should I sit there and do work?? I ended up buying a Popcorn Hour and guess what? It played everything I threw at it? I don't need to play guesses with other people's encoding. Let the device I pay for do the work for me, not the other way around.

  • looks pretty good quality for "dvdrip"

  • Can you give those video files an icon or picture? So that it looks stylish when you browse your collection.

  • I hear it will also play video_ts folders too. Puts it over the top for me.

  • It absolutely plays movies with subtitles, you just have to convert your current subtitles into .SRT (UTF-8). You can download "jubler" for free and it does the job beautifully. the name of the subtitle and the video file must match.

  • can you make it play movies with .sub .srt and etc ?

    need external hard drive right?

  • can you make it play movies with .sub files? please that question its so important for me.. trying to watch a mkv. movie with subtitles..

  • Can you recommend a WD TV HD? Im interested in buying one, instead of an expensive Popcorn Hour.

Have you tested it with any 1080P material with DD 5.1 surround?

  • is it the Western Digital - WD TV HD Media Player?

if so, can you make it play movies with .sub files? And does it play .mkv movies?

  • Yes it is the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player .. I haven't got any movies with .sub files to test for you, though it doesn't expressly say it supports them.

    Yes it supports .MKV
