  • Damn - I never heard all this fucked-up music when it came out - because I was 2 years old at the time. Had to discover it in the 1980s - since music sucked at that time in college. A good lesson in how to stretch a riff for 17 minutes. Just like the best Acid tunes from Hendrix, Beatles etc... it makes today's 42-track pop music sound like thick wallpaper in comparison.

  • well I am from later age,,,but this megasong in Mexico was a superhit....hey you remember that years!!!!

  • I dont know what sort of magic you worked on youtube to get it to go for the full 17 mins but. I like your style :)

  • *throws beachball*

  • its a trip, for all the whole universe on the back of a purple dragon!!

  • Supernatural!

  • To those who question how anyone can like this song, remember this: it's only one-third of the total equation that made this song what it is.

The other two parts of the equation I'll let you figure out.

  • it sounds like in the garden of eden. i guess thats why it was so hard to find lol

  • this is a classic. Great song. Seen them play this live

  • On my third attempt at listening to this I finally made it all the way through the song!

  • Hippie Rock ROCKS!!!!

  • the 1% dislike this song.

  • 11:30 also sounds like tubular bells from the movie The Exorcist???

  • this guy was so high at that moment instead of write "in the garden of eden" he wrote in a gadda da vida

  • @babyblack98 Y'know back in those Hallucinogenic daze of Enlightenment, m8, it oft times paid to have a good buzz on when one wrote those marathon length epic masterpieces...

  • @babyblack98 actually, he was drunk and was sluring his words. the singer liked how it sounded better slurred, so it stuck.

  • Hola es una excelente cancion, el solo de guitarra esta super, por cierto alguien tendra la tablatura de esta cancion, con el solo de guitarra?

  • MUY BUENA CANCIÓN

  • Oh en both of the top comments are a simpson's joke ...

    okay

  • My favorite "vintage" song! HYEAHHHH!

  • Gotta love iron butterfly, just the name sent shock through the "teens" in our "hood". Did they make anything else? Help me here, I am elderly....53 1/2.?

  • @2857amy Well there was the first album called "Heavy" which came out right in Jan. of 1968. That album had a few different band members though. Then there was THIS album in mid 1968. In early 1969, they released the "Ball" album (the all yellow cover with "Butterfly" spelled out by butterflies all crammed together).

  • OMG, my sister and neighbor girl used to dance to this.....in a mirror, no doubt....we were seven or eight...got a hold of it from older siblings.....in the rare moment our stay at home Christian Mom was busy doing laundry or something. Thanks so much for this. It is making me smile after a very sad two weeks.!!!!! A sister in Christ. amy

  • No description available.

    Nuff said

  • Is that "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" around 11:30?

  • @didderjade OMG it does sound like it !

  • @didderjade @@ cool!

  • Oh, like wow man. It looks like seven people were on the same stuff Doug Ingle was when they recorded this. Far out. =P

  • My family has owned this album on 8-track cassette and CD and it never get's old. I relocated my CD(my dad owns the 8-track and someone stole our cassette copy) dropped it in. I ran all my errands on this song before it was 2/3rds over. I remember borrowing my dad's cassette in 1996 back during highschool and the astonishment on my friend's faces on how heavy it was for when it was made and for it's lenght which was the entire bus-ride.

  • This is proof that the 70's were Long and Stoned.

  • pretty fractal

  • rock turned rap song that is great on both sides

  • "Hey, Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn ?"

  • @LyndaHudson "ehehe! shhh!"

  • instructions: Become stoned or acutely drunk, lie back with eyes closed, and relax mind. Enjoy the results.

Note: Any and all distractions must not be allowed to occur

  • I love any song that's over 8 minutes! I didn't think anything was longer than Green Day's Jesus of Suburbia! This is epic!!

  • @SpongebobsABoss I think you'll like Thick As a Brick ;)

  • why cant they have song like this any more justed rockin out and havin fun 4 like ever they dont have ne song now adays that songs go more then 3 or 4 mins long maybe they had better drugs in the 60s and 70s i dont no but this shit is bad ass

  • @JENICH0143 Because nobody has good tastes in music, so nobody wants to hear stuff like this. There's stuff similar to this now, it just doesn't get produced, and nobody hears it. Which sucks...

  • i love this song and only iron butterfly could make a 17 minute song that doesnt get boring

  • @mrtimj94 amen to that

  • @mrtimj94 there are a few more

  • There's only one word to describe this: POWER!

  • The most played song of 1969 , the young Cops would play this over there load speakers to warn us the Pigs were on there way to raid us .

  • I've not heard of this song, but I have to say it's not half bad. It is not the finest song ever performed, but it is still good.

  • love to play it loud in my truck at night....

  • TRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP

  • This is a true clasic!

  • In the garden of Eden by I am Butterfly ;)

  • Hey Marge, remember when we used to make out this hymn?

  • at 5:45 is that a c3po butterfly?

  • @kinggarus lol I just saw it! LOL

  • i like it when the two top comments are the sameeeeee

  • i like it when the two top comments are the same

  • in a garden of eden

  • Heavy psych fans might like "Rosetta West - Low."

  • sorry dude thick as a brick is not better

  • Someone should do a cover with an organ and a chorus.

  • Shape shifter!!!

  • I dont know why people get impresssed by a 17 minutes song. Thick as a Brick is 43 minutes long and is a lot better. this not impress me.

  • @Akron162 I don't get why people are so impressed by a 43 minute song. Dopesmoker by Sleep is 63 minutes long and is both amazing and awful in equal measures (the entire concept is genius, and the song inspires awe, but it is composed primarily of one chord and the lyrics are incredibly bad...)

  • @Whorules17 this is a good song to listen to while ur tripping balls!!

  • @Akron162 I like both and hear them together.

  • @Akron162 longer songs dont mean better and also its there opinion

  • @vetrix after pondering your comment and looking for varification of your point of view I can only conclude you're an asshole so fuck you!

  • @navretvet my point of view is not biased its simply ive heard both songs and like them equally im not playing fave.my point is long songs are epic but once again longer dosent mean its better (because) its an opinion you said it dosent impress you all am sayin is just enjoy the song

  • Wait a minute.. this sounds like the two top comments are both equals!

  • @Vassy97 no, they are not...one of them has a comma, lol...

  • Greatest. Song. Ever! The swirling organ beginning the song segueing into the popping bass, the crunching guitar, and powerful drums... That, my friends, is rock at its absolute best!

  • GRREEEEEAT! I'm trippin'.

  • I love it.'but mum was stoned

  • OOPS i'am stoned again

  • Comment removed

  • @TheDTH224 I understand the sebtiment I really do but be thankfull also that you didnt have to discover this music in some place like saigon, Quang Tri or the A Shau. please understand that I dont know if your dad served or not and I dont know if you have or are serving so please forgive me if you think I'm talking out my ass. • @m1kewithaone It is beleived that the guy who wrote this was trying to write "In the Garden of Eden", but he was so high when he wrote it it came out as “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”.

  • @m1kewithaone In the garden of eden.

Story behind it is that the lead singer was so high when i wrote it down, that he thought it sounded like in a gadda da vida. so they went with that.

  • @ThereByTheTrees ....and we're glad he did!!!

  • hey marge, remember, we used to make out to this song

  • a song that lasts 17 minutes...thats wicked :)

  • This and friends of mine by the guess who are two of the best stoner songs of all time

Mixo di Radio Capital ...ciao a tutti

  • In the Garden of Eden, by I-Ron Butterfly.

  • Once America the beautiful, Americans all. Now America eats it's own.

  • America the beautiful, Americans all.

  • Wait a minute this sounds like rock and or roll

  • @Jezeus11 simpsons!

  • @a1rsoft4ev3r Hell Yes! :3

  • Believe it or not but they played this entire song on the radio yesterday.

  • One of the best rock-titles ever! Thank you so much.

  • As far as I know, this is the first song by a rock band that took up the whole side of an album.

  • Doug Ingle (voce, piano)

    Erik Brann (chitarra, violino)

    Lee Dorman (basso)

    Ron Bushy (batteria)

  • I just bought this record yesterday for $3!

  • I Ron Butterfly. Rock and or roll.

  • Nice story. Told in a calm setting about a man who liked his underwear pretty

  • wicked drum solo!

  • @SithLord2012 : I wasn't either.. I was a sheltered, suburban lad of only 8 years old when I looked at the LP..at a cousin's place..and asked myself what could you do on one side of an album for 17 minutes? IHitherto, I only saw LPs with 6-7 songs on each side (UK & US pressings) & never before encountered this; I aasked Mum could I listen to this , she said yeah, I sat enraptured betweenst the speakers like some kinda Buddhist Idol for the full 17 minutes...and I was HOOKED!

  • the rumor was that he was stoned that it orginally was in the garden of eden but it came out as in a gadda da vida

  • DUH-DUH-DUHDUHDUHDUH-DUH-DUH-DUH-DUHDUH

  • The story when I was 12 & this song came out was this. Since John Lennon had made his comment that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus and been rewarded with a huge backlash of record-burnings, Doug Ingle wasn't allowed to say "in the garden of Eden" right out. Whatever the case, I think it was a bigger hit becauase of the change. Just one of those things I guess.

  • Das gewaltigste Drummersolo der Rock-Geschichte! Iron Butterflys Ron Bustry trommelt seinen Pulsschlag, das Highligth im Bezug auf alle Drummer!

  • this song is mad short, think like a brick by Jethro Tull is 42 minutes

  • Wait a minute this sounds like rock and or roll.

  • I listened to the whole thing... twice! I'm not high, but I would like to point out I've been awake since 6am and it's 5am the next day now. You don't have to be high to enjoy it... just really f*cking tired.

  • Rev. Lovejoy doesn't like this!

  • @SithLord2012 high or not, this is great

  • This song changed a lot of things in the music world. Smashed barriers! An all time classic!!!!

  • number 17170 :)

  • Anyone else learn about this song from The Simpsons?

  • @1010Kissfan And for the longest time thought it was called 'In the Garden of Eden'.

  • @moltenamber85 Well that's a common mistake, it was supposed to be called that, but they were too stoned out of their minds to say it. I sometimes wish I could be that high.

  • @1010Kissfan Not me...I'm enough of a geezer to remember when it came out...argh...

  • Sleep: Dopesmoker

Dopesmoker is a REALLY long song. It's over 1 hour!!!

  • Whoever disliked this needs to be dragged out into the street and shot.

  • I play the CD in my pickup

  • acid is the shit!

  • The performance version ran around 45:00. It was wonderful; 40 years later I'd still love to find a live video of them. The VHS version, alas, was one of the worst rock videos ever...which may be in keeping with the original intent.
