If you fancy seeing some music inspired by Fred McDowell this March, Alabama 3 are performing acoustic and unplugged!
They are performing in this stripped down acoustic way to show the songs in a format reminiscent of the people that have been their inspiration, chiefly the old Delta Blues players like Fred McDowell and Bukka White.
I am looking for a specific Fred McDowell video. It starts out with some dialog where he tells about "My name is Mississippi Fred McDowell, I ain't form Mississippi that's just what they call me." He goes on to say "I don't play no rock and roll I play the straight up blues". The lyrics to the song are "I used to have everything, then I had something, now I got noting at all". All quotes may be off a bit. Anyone know what video it is?
@ImLysdexic Hi I have that record, it's the album " I do not play no rock and roll", the song is 'Baby pleas don't go', I'm pretty sure I uploaded it a while ago.
@ImLysdexic Here are some you can buy via AMAZON THAT ARE GREAT: 1.) "BOTTLENECK BLUES" ON VESTAPOL
2.) ON YAZOO label, Fredf McDowell and Big Williams, lastly, not as good, American Blues Festival in UK, an fake backdrop, sterile setting, still worth it, other two far better...
I have heard the humble harmonica a mouth harp before. Where I live in Tennessee it's called simply a harp when you're playing blues with it. Just like a violin is called a fiddle when you're going to play bluegrass with it.
Other names for the harp are: Mississippi Sax, mouth organ, and gob iron(my fave)
i dont care about tecnical definitions, its a colloquial expression for harmonica where i live, people call them harps, mouth organ or mouth harps, just because youve never heard it before doesnt mean its not true, ive ran into people over the years who ive said the word "acoustic guitar" to and they looked at me like i was nuts and said "do you mean a flat top guitar??" they never heard it called by any other name.
man im from argentina...and we dont have this kind of music...well we have the biggest blues player maybe you know napolitano...or pappo's blues...well im just trying to explain that its incredible fred mcdowell only a few minutes ago i start listening to this ...becouse i never try it before....i must say that im happy i found this well good luck and keep puting vids becouse this is great...well bye
to be honest calaberico the only place in the world to have proper blues is the south in the usa. im from the uk & every country has people that TRY to do blues music but for some reason it only seems to sound proper when it comes from places like the delta. you wont find anyone else who sounds like sonhouse, fred mcdowell etc, i dont know why but after hearing blues from all over the world there was some magic in the air in the 1930/40's in mississippi
@calaberico dude, with all due respect, pappo was an OUTSTANDING guitar player, probably the best rock (or hard rock, or metal for whatever matter) guitarist latin america has ever had, but he was not by any margin the best bluesman. he played too much, too many notes, too clean for the blues. so what if bb king championed him as one of the greatest? bb king hasnt put out proper blues since he started making money of it (circa the 50s)
no offense, but it seems you dont know your blues right
possibly one of the most underated blues musicians ever. ive never heard of him til today when i was told to check him out, im glad i did this is great!
One has to wonder where you've been. I've had Fred McDowell albums for over 25 years. The Stones recorded his version of 'You Got To Move' on their Sticky Fingers album, and mistakenly credited him with having written the song.
Definition: harmonica, mouth organ, harp, mouth harp a small rectangular free-reed instrument having a row of free reeds set back in air holes and played by blowing into the desired hole
i'm telling you people, EVERYBOBY calls the harmonica a mouth harp where im from, just cause you never heard it dont mean it aint true, every country, town, city, state, province, neighbourhood and family got different ways of saying the same damn thing
haha settle down man i aint lookin to fight was just trying to explain what you said so well in the second reply. aint it a bitch tryin to get your point across in text. thanks for the post by the way. i love good blues

@Farmaz The "magic" was racism and depression.
