@LeBuav @olimarson1 maybe because it was a stage perfomance and they weren't as fit as 5 years ago or so. but they still did a brilliant job in Live From the Basement.
@MrLosfuegos - actually he told Johnny to speed up the tempo on the beat processor at 0:30. At first I thought you were right and Thom had given him the middle finger just to be cheeky, but I noticed Johnny nod his head yes after the signal from Thom. Then the beat sped up.
Anyways - I love Ed's contributions to the vocals on ALL tunes - he is such a critical utility man in this band.
@Unevaluated Yeah, that's definitely a big factor aswell. But still, while I think his voice is much nicer to listen to now on the records, there is no doubt it has gotten more thin and weak these last years. And that's a shame :/
@huliheaden Oh god I thought I was the only one who thought that.
I always cringe a bit when he tries to sing the older, heavier songs off of The Bends or OKC. Even on newer stuff his voice strains and breaks a lot easier than before.
But all the soft songs like Give up the Ghost or anything like that are still done perfectly.
@CaptainPengu Indeed. He has the voice. It's just not what it used to be. I think he may even have developed some vocal nodules in the Kid A period (That's when his voice started going downhill) though I'm no vocal expert. On a good day, he is still fucking amazing, just look at some of his solo performances, from after this tour.
I have seen this song peformed live 5-6 times and normally this is my fav tune but this has to be the worst peformance by Thom Yorke, listen to his voice from 2:05. Maybe his got a throat infection as its so out of tune, the rest of the band sounded great though.
@SmallFish616 the keyboard he is using doesn't produce it's own sound, it is a midi controller. I use a midi controller too, and my guess is he took the original Mild Und Leise piece and chopped it up so each chord was triggered by him hitting a key. I do this in Garageband/Logic
@jacobygreenwood HOLY FUCK THE WHOLE PROGRESSION IS SAMPLES DUDE. Jonny's modular synthesizer uses NO SAMPLES WHATSOEVER. Colin is playing on a MIDI controller, and the samples he is sampling are coming from an external source, probably a computer.
@blackbeltbrown My theory is that at the start of the song Ed creates a loop of "noise" with his pedals and guitar (hence the guitar at the start) but he mutes it so we cant hear it. Then he puts down his guitar and sings the backups for the song and plays the shaker lol
In the breakdown sort of section he finally triggers the loop he previously created and just tampers with it using his pedals untill the end of the song, creating that swoosh sound
@blackbeltbrown Johnny is taking care of the drum machine. Ed, he's doing something with the sample.. although that might be johnny too.... Idk..... Idioteque is sure confusing with roles.
@MrLosfuegos I know it looks like he's flipping Jonny off at 0:30, but if you pause the video you can see Thom's got his pointer finger up and asking to turn up the volume. You can see Jonny nod his head in acknowledgement right after.
Feel so bad for Thom, one of the best vocalists ever, by like when they toured for Kid A i think it was like he said himself. He hated touring so much cozit made his voice give out, like in this video. I think it was at Reading Fest 2009 when they do Creep, after he gives out when he screams run look how pissed off and upset he looks :/ ah well. Hope he is resting his voice and comes to Australia some time!!
@SudoPollo it's where you take a piece or 'sample' of somebody else's music. so here they have taken four chords from mild und leise by paul lansky and used them in their own song.
