Thats not why cats play with their prey. They do it to exhaust it, because its important that the cat itself doesnt get bit by the mouse. They have dangerous bacteries in their mouth, and the cat will suffer from severe infectious wounds if not careful and exhaust the prey.

Cats like to play with their prey to train. If the mouse doesn't move, the cat will leave it alone. When the mouse runs, the cat will chase it. They do it just to practice. It's not like it actually needs food.

The reason cats bat and nip at a prey animal before killing it is because they don't want to go in for a killing blow if the animal has too much fight left in it. They are avoiding any potential injury. Yes, cats probably enjoy it- but there's an actual reason to their madness.

Calling an act of nature that has gone on for generations animal cruelty is just down right ridiculous. I've seen stray cats do that to mice before killing, it just depends on the animals temperament. My house cat kills mice pretty damn quick so I know its not based on how they are raised.

I am personally thankful that cats play hunters against mice because I know how dangerous a mouse infestation can be to humans, animals, and food sources. This is a way of balancing out the numbers. =__=
