She might have been a little precocious when she was younger, that was because she was a talented young kid and she was one of the first real young actresses. It's probably because animals have a certain built in innocence to them. For instance, they know something is wrong, but they really don't know they are going to actually die.

Also animals are many times dependent on humans for survival, this brings out a particular caring for them, that is touched when they are in a dire situation.

Then there is the individuality of animals that simply sets them apart from the more common likes of us.
