this wasn't an ND it was an example of someone not calculating the total travel velocity of the projectile and making sure that it has enough room to come to a complete stop without hitting anything of value. a byproduct of homemade explosives, where the velocity of the explosive is unknown. to minimise the possibility of this happening again, the mythbusters should aim away from settlements.

this isnt the first time they've had an accident. when they were first testing the 'knock your socks off myth', the explosion they caused sent out a shockwave that damaged a nearby town, then the newspapers all around reported that they had LEVELED the city. the producer took kari byron around to apologize to everyone affected, bc 'no one can be mad at a pregnant woman'. they're not testing at that specific bomb range anymore btw. just wanted to get that out there.
