further to people's comments on ringo being ignored, this was a cultural thing: he was a drummer.

drummers - with the possible exception of gene krupa - were considered weirdos who lurked in the background, never spoke except thru their instruments, and had nothing to say. in part the prominence given ringo in their two movies reshaped the perception of drummers, which you see in the treatment of those who followed.

the beatles' cultural impact has not yet been completely understood.

this is 1964, north end of maple leaf gardens, after the end of the first show. i was there.

what you have to understand about reporters of the time - and i was the youngest there - is that they had no understanding of what had just hit and absolutely no understanding of scouse humour. under the circumstances the interview is quite sane and focused. soon interviews with the boys would descend into insanity. you all see this in retrospect, coloured by the effects the beatles had on culture.

Most Interviewers back in those days were such douche bags to them! And this guy is no exception, completely ignored George (gasp!) And basically called Ringo ugly, right to his face! WHAT THE FUCK?! If I were interviewing them I wouldn't ignore a single one of them! And I wouldn't waste my time asking about their goddamn hair or how great the fans are there, because what can they say?! "Your fans suck!"

I love you Ringo, and you are definitely NOT ugly! And George, I would NEVER ignore you!

I know, the guy is pretty inept :) But you have to admire the way Paul just sort of plays it off. From what I've seen (on tv and youtube) he can really work an interview to look good in the end :)
