Saxondale is a work of Genius - The DVD set has commentaries by Coogan and the some of the detail that you could watch 10 times and not even see is amazing.

Eg. The women behind Vikki in the office never ever moved. - you always saw the back of her stationary head in every scene. She left the show but Coogan just put Get Well soon cards on her desk for the rest of the series

maybe if your history was better feller and no it wasn't meant as an insult, America won the war in the Pacific, and the manhattan project had U.K scientists involved also, we made no diff to european campaign, it merely sped things up by a couple of months, the Russians would have steam rolled it anyway, and one of the big pushes to get the atom bomb ready was to get in there before the Russian go in, and finish japan, it just wasn't about saving more live earlier.

I reckon that this isn't the world's greatest ever comedy and really doesn't match up to the Partridge radio series from the early 90s or KMKYWAP on the TV. However I think that Saxondale is worth watching and it's much better than the rest of the dross that pollutes TV these days. What else would Coogan fans watch currently (Sept 2007)? I'm not sure what folks who like Coogan's work are expecting if they don't find Saxondale funny - it's clearly Coogan doing what he does.

I'm no expert in comedy / drama production; what makes you say that? It strikes me that none of the characters say anything superfluous and I think that the pseudo 'right-on' neighbour and the Morwena Banks character deliver great lines.

Saxondale whilst being Partridge's third cousin, he's no where near as subtle. He pushes phrases too far as though Coogan as a writer is attempting to create a catchphrase. Partridge had catchphrases; "Jurassic Park" "Back of the net", but they never seemed forced, the felt true to the world of Partridge. Saxondale just doesn't feel true, and so not funny.

I'm not sure I've detected a catchphrase at this point. I guess that if, like me, your were very taken with AP from 1992(?) onwards, anything that Coogan does subsequently seems pale in comparison (Tony Ferrino is the prime example). That said though I still think that Saxondale's worth watching. It's not 'fan of Samurai swords' or 'grotto for the video recorder' quality but it's still pretty good.

balls! checkout ricky gervais's character in extras whose sit com creation is denegrated with inane catchphrases. saxondale is infinitely more subtle and human than the cartoonesque alan partridge. saxondale is mature, at ease withitself humour that doesnt have to try hard to prove itself. All the truly great comedy, steptoe, laurel and hardy, the marx bros, curb, the office, hancock, spike, python, pete and dud had a depth of material and character that transcended one dimensional catchphrases.
