You need to be certified.- A+ My arse! Wouldn't let you touch a screwdriver let alone a laptop. Nice fail with the keyboard connector by the way Sausage Fingers.
Thanks... but a word of caution to prevent damage. There were quite a few more screws at every step (three more screws under battery casing before the top plastic comes off).. Quite a few more screws before the circuit board lifts out !!
.. but was getting nowhere till I viewed the video.
Thanks for the Memory (memories?) - Used your video to install a 1gb stick. My unit was slightly different, The hard drive was attached to the underside of the mother board hence there was no hdd ribbon cable to detach. it all came out together -. Also there was already .5 gb stick in the slot - so I pulled it and inserted the 1gb - - the memory was a VERY tight fit - Kingston. But The time and effort paid me back in spades! - my most complex app was locking up all the time - no more!
Acer wins the award for the worst ever design of a netbook. Seriously, that is the single most ridiculous place I've ever seen someone put a RAM slot.
My aspire one also had the HD as stated in other comments.
I ran into the problem of finding out the power connector supply thingy ma bob wire and broken off the solder. Which was causing my intermittent charging.
Alas, thanks for the tutorial. I found it very useful. I did have my computer back together to find my total memory to be 1532mb. But it's in pieces again waiting to be soldered. Hence why I'm replying on an iPod touch( and the sloppy punctuation)
It would be easier if the engineer used their head and put in the quick access door from the bottom of the Aspire One with the 2 crew. Think about it. Which is the most likely component user would want to install on the laptop? Hard Drive? Screen? Keyboard? or Just the RAM!
The video shows a netbook with the solid state 'hard drive' - mine has the real hard drive which is much bigger, and to lift up the motherboard I also had to remove the green pcb seen on the left edge. There are 3 screws, one of which is *very* tight and people must be careful not to strip the head. It always helps when using a screwdriver of the correct size.
How are you supposed to re-connect the keyboard ribbon? Mine came off the black clip just like yours....how do i do it in reverse order? Does Acer really make these things this cheap?!
@crunchgear, can you just get it to the store, where you buyed it from and let them do it? I'm 14 years old, and I am really scared for breaking my Acer Aspire One. =(
@mapleleaf11 So agree. I have an Asus and all I had to do was open up one tiny little hatch in the back right where the card was....it popped right out and the new one went right in...this looks like doing surgery....too easy to fuck up
I have not opened up the Aspire One. The chipset supports 2x1GB of 667MHz RAM. The other non-upgradeable RAM is soldered in. This RAM is 512MB at 533MHz limiting the Total RAM to 1024MB+512MB RAM at 533MHz.
Is it possible to desolder the RAM and insert the upgrade? Is there a slot for the RAM, or is it only soldered? If anyone has a closeup picture of the soldered RAM, I would like to see it. Is this too difficult to attempt, or is it possible?
The funny thing is, I was in the middle of doing this to my laptop, and then when you got to the part where you said "Uh-Oh!"....You scared me so bad!
Thanks mate. Just did 512 RAM and 120 G hard disk model 60 minutes ago (NOT an SSD model). A few extra moves and precautions for this one:
- also need 2 remove the wifi module from its socket.
- need to unscrew the smaller board housing the mic and the phone sockets from the box as well, in order to be able to safely lift up the motherboard together with the hard drive.
PS. the memory i used was a 4200 (533). :) good luck! it's easier than it looks:)
What is the max ram I can fit in, namely would a 2Gb module work?
btw thanks for the info - after I lost my warranty card (shitty stuff, vehicle hijack included) I decided to disassemble the thing just to see what interesting things can I find inside, I made it almost to the point but lol, I didn't pull the mobo that time and thus never seen the RAM slot lol :D
wait thats wat i was thinkin i wanna get one of these, and theres a tab at the bottom cant u add ram from there instead completely opening it and potentionally trashing it?
Nope, wrong. It will only read as 1.5 GBs. The mobo on the AA1 is limited to 1.5 GBs due to the 512 MB DIMM soldered directly to the PCB. The DIMM slot itself supports up to a 1 GB module.
Worst case scenario is your AA1 fails to boot due to a larger than support DIMM size in its socket.
what ever i know im right cause i have plus i sold it fro 400 i have sold the only aa1 in the world able to run 3gb so with my skill i can probley make one run 64 bit if i tweek it a bit but belive what you want i have the facts
sorry bud, but tinkering like that and making the laptop read that much as far as i know its impossible, you have the facts but no proof of the facts,
Then it wasn't a first-generation AA1. You probably had one of the newer ones out (like one of the 11.6" ones). I still have my old AA1, so I know for a fact (as do others) that it will only recognize up to 1.5 GBs of RAM.
haha, ya imma buy one of these computers, and i want to add memory to the ram, so thanks for this easy step by step guide, and a laugh! your funny without trying.kudos.

I would suggest removing any upgrades before sending it in for a warranty claim though ^^

No, it was fine. It didn't break. It was just the plastic part holding the cable down. I pulled it outward when I should have pulled it upward instead. It snapped right back on, though.
