Wonderful performance....one of my favorite Tavener pieces. I am sorry for the circumstances in which this was performed. I am sure he treasured listening to it in the choirs of angels.
With such a rich choral tradition at Luther, it's no wonder the Cathedral Choir can sound like this. Plus, I have worked with Dr. Peter and know she can get a good sound out of a choral ensemble. Excellent job, everyone!
This song was sung at Princess Diana's funeral by the Westminster Abbey Choir. The pipe organ joined in during the last few measures of the song to give it a powerful ending. The Luther College choir did an amazing job.
To the doubters, I can vouch that the sound you're hearing is quite real, I was one of the tall basses in the back who sang the same sustained note the whole song! Matt stood next to me, he was a huge tall guy with amazing resonance and power to his voice, best volleyball player I've ever seen, and he was a good friend. We were all hit pretty hard when he died. We doing this before he died but it became his memorial song and we continued to sing it in honor of him all year at all our concerts.
The most amazing thing I have ever heard. It truly send goosbumps and shocks of electricity though my entire body. "Come Enjoy" sent tears to my eyes, I celebrate my time at Luther and truly know lucky a person must feel to be apart of such a musical masterpiece and experience the music so close. Luther never seizes to amaze me.
@CelebrateAdoption This is so moving especially when you know the reason why it was sung. As a young Airman on guard outside Westminster Abbey for Princess Diana's Funeral, I'll never forget it !!!!
Wow... the reason behind this performance is so moving! It is indeed fitting. My high school choir is currently singing it and I adore this piece. So much depth and range to each emotion.
A very haunting performance and even more haunting reason for it. The choir does a very good job with it. I hear some vibrato or other disturbance that prevents the pitch from being pure but I enjoyed the performance very much. The Mansfield University Concert Choir just did this for our holiday concert not too long ago and their version is amazing.
Oh it's real. I sang in that choir my sophomore year too. Sandra is an amazing director. I can tell just by listening when she has directed a choir. I always liked it when she'd sub for Tim. Plus, I'd recognize the acoustics of the CFL in any recording.
Yeah!!! Luther College!!! But you have to admit, the acoustics aren't really conducive to speaking, haha. But our college is pretty sweet, especially our music ensembles.
Thanks Vinola. It is even more impressive that this is not Luther's top choir (That would be Nordic Choir), it is the Luther College Cathedral Choir, composed entirely of sophomores (and the choir in which Matt sang before he died and in which many of his friends were members).
Excellant rendition of Tavener Athene Song. Congrats Luther College Choir. But the person in charge of recording the song should be in jail for malpractice.
guys, it was beautiful. my prayers to matt's family as life continues. and to you all who knew him. just wanted to note that the poster should edit the composer name to tavener (taverner is the 16th century composer, who is, funnily enough, in the family line of this composer!). and it's 'sir john tavener' now.
this piece is so beautiful and it gives me goosebumps every time. the verse with "come enjoy" made me realize that although this death is so tragic, we can rejoice in the fact that he is in God's Eternal Kingdom and that those who miss him will see him again, forever! =) nicely sung also!=)
beautiful guys, this is a beautiful tribute, this was also sang at the funeral for Princess Diana as her coffin was being bourne out of Westminster Abbey
A wonderful affirmation for troubled hearts to hold on to... may Matt's memory be as source of comfort and strength to you all... *great* singing, by the way.
Wow. That was amazing. The verse with "Come enjoy.." gave me goosebumps. I am so lucky to be a part of this choir, and to have gone to school with such an amazing group of people. Matthew will be missed...and he is, indeed, enjoying the rewards and crowns.

This was such an incredible service. Such a sad and sudden loss for Luther and this service was a great way to remember his presence.

Whoops, pardon my grammar there... ran out of room and shorted my comment and made myself sound stupid...

Can I make a suggestion? There is kind of a "hiss" noise through the movie. You can get rid of most of it with Audacity noise removal tool.
