what is the name of the music to this excellent video i am english but am fascinated by your civil war and what would be the best book to read on the subject
@ge123off "The American Heritage New History of the Civil War" by Bruce Catton and James M. McPherson. Its full of actual photographs and has pictorial dioramas of all the major battles and the tactics that were employed by both sides. Also articles about the causes and the effects on politics and the general populations. Good book.
@ge123off The music is from the soundtrack to the movie, "Gettysburg". Best book to read is: "The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War" by Thomas J. DiLorenzo. An expose of 'honest Abe's' agenda.
The South, or Confederate States fought mainly for States' Rights to have slaves. With that said, did that mean all those who fought in the CSA were in favor of slavery? God forbid, Gen. Robert E. Lee was against slavery, he fought to defend his home in Arlington,Va which was; just over the Potomac river from Washington City (as it was known back then, or Wash. D.C.) Both sides had leaders that were Christians, who prayed for victory over then opposing side, just the those on the Union.
@RevRabbiJCG Lee and many Generals fought the overreach of the Federal govt, whether they were in favor of slavery or not, we should let history and the just Judge of the Universe make the decision. However, unlike the 1840s' and 1850s,. Which were the watershed years that lead to secession of the Southern states. We should as Americans fight the ever encroaching Fed. govt by campaigning for those who desire a smaller govt and not a bigger one [that is costly and takes from you in more then one.
@rgray331975 I like how today we hear the Republicans were always for the rich and the democracts where always for the poor. Heck the Democratic Party position was if they want to breakaway so do it and goodbye, The parties ideals that is spread got changed by a constant pounding to the point that today we believe it.
The South fought for States Rights not slavery. Only between 4% - 6% of the population owned slaves. Do you really think that between 94 & 96% of the people would fight for an institution that they received no benefit from? Slavery was not the issue. It was the belief that the people of the state should decide how they should be governed, not dictated to by a federal government that was hostile to them.
Hey Kentucky, there was over 500 years of slavery in this country but for some reason people like to blame the four years of the Confederacy for the whole thing. The Civil War goes deeper than slavery, even though slavery was a major issue.
I believe most southerners back then didn't like slavery, they just didn't know what to do about it.
I hate the idea of slavery! It was wrong and in no way do I support it. However, your comment on if you fought for the South or the North is totally wrong. I can tell you don't know much about this time in history, but I do! I'm not trying to make you mad, but that statement was historically wrong.
Don't be sorry about all your comments. Your welcome to comment on my anytime friend!
@kentuckybasketball09 you need to study your history a little further...making a statement like this makes you look foolish...if you are of the opinion that the north was the " good guys " and south were " bad guys " who were only fighting for slavery then you shouldnt even be on here.
What are you talking about? The Confederacy was making millions of dollars in the soft goods industry without any labor costs due to slavery. It had a lot to do with money and slavery.
but it was not the institution of slavery that was the issue, it was how much power that institution gave to the south and to its STATES. Most causes of the war come back to the great power play between the state, and their rights, versus the federal government and what they believed they were ordained to do. Then many people had a great allegiance to their state, a term almost interchangable with family, and home, a concept many now find difficult to grasp. it is a great injustice
to the men who fought and died in this war, to modernize the issues, or to make them easier for others in our contempary time to grasp. this war, is an incredible and horrible time in American history, one that CANT be played with. THAT is the reason films that do great justice to those men like "gettysburg" make me cry for them every time. Cry for the men who explified something greater than themselves, that i can respect.
Awesome...awesome...awesome...when I was a child in the 50's ...I walked through the battlefield at Shiloh...walked down the Sunken Road, where thousand had died...at my age (9)...it really left an impression on me.
We went to the 145th Gettysburg and toured that battlefield as well as Shiloh, Sharpsburg and Carnton. Also saw Washington and Lee College and VMI. The whole trip was amazing and a very emotional experience for me, as well as my first time in the South.(We spent a lot of time in Arkansas.)
WOW....currently, my husband is painting the 15mm miniatures and hes recreating the battle scene of Antietam. Hes my educator...lol. I learned so much abt the battle of gettysburg and now Im always learning more about it by going thru the internet. Someday in the near future....I want to gather up my family and take a tour of the battlefield. I bought some relics for my husband for christmas....bullets thats like 140+ yr old! He loved it!
the best thing about Gettysburg other than the battlefield itself is that Antietam, Washington D.C.,Bull Run battlefield and Hershey are all about an hour away and the Hershey chocolate plant has Hershey park. The park has over 60 rides. Good way to get the kids to Gettysburg!!

Excellent video.
Although time marches on, the battlefields of the Civil War still makes us pause and think about what went on in those fields many years ago.
The guns are silent, but the echo of it all can still be heard.
