It was on the right setting, but it was on mute for some reason. Whatever it was, I was able to take care of it on that utility screen, so I'm thankful.

thats awesome. but in my settings or whatever you were doesn't even have the options of built in microphone. it had the USB cord mic. i have been trying to use but that still doesn't work for Skype. do you know what to do?

You need USB microphone or USB Headset for Skype and other recording aplications. Mini jack headphones are not supported on your Mac Mini. I think e.g. the Logitech 250 USB Headset solves your problem. Ps. sorry for my english.
