  • is the person at 1:50 real or a robot or 3d CGI?

  • Thumbs Up if I Feel Fantastic By CreepyBlog brought you here

  • I think the reason why the far side of the Uncanny Valley is so disturbing is that we must assign the object to either "HUMAN" or "ROBOT." A being like C3PO is still a robot but he's cute because he ACTS like a human. He does not look like one. The very-close-to-human androids and gynoids are assigned subconsciously to "HUMAN" but seem defective in some way and we are repulsed. They're like disfigured humans not robots. We look for flaws in them but not C3PO because he doesn't even come close.

  • I don't think it's just about death and dying. Children have a wider and deeper uncanny valley, some just can't stand puppets, clowns or santa. Those don't resemble death, but children get even more horrified specially when such characters look at them with a smile without blinking for too long. Oh yeah, without blinking for too long = death. Interesting.

  • seriously was te girl on 1:53 a robot?!

  • @beertjeslisser Actually she was just a cgi animation.

  • @beertjeslisser No, at the beginning shes is normal then some 2D motion tracked masks kick in, nothing special.

  • Don't watch this stoned.

  • I think the uncanny valley is COOL. The more human they are the better. I think it'd be cool to one day see how far a humanoid robot can go. I know there's the fear of robots taking over or people being robots but if you can distinguish the two I think it's fine and actually really exciting. :)

  • FUCK ME as soon as the Halloween music started I got the chills, that fucking face... No sleep tonight

  • @Pontus900

I don't understand however how well sculpted and animated 3D can be considered creepy.

Dolls where you clearly can see they aren't alive but they try to mimic humans are scary, not in the same league.

It's a bit like bad special effects from the 80's I always thought those were scary as shit when I was a kid, mostly because of how horrid they looked, guly faces etc, just like the first android in this movie.

  • i react this way when i look at a alien picture

  • I can't stand Wall-E....Mostly because of their voices.

  • I am one of the few people who was never frightened by the Polar Express, more proof that I am clearly from another planet. So what if it's pretty deep in the uncanny valley? I still enjoy it and it really touches my heart. I can't help but LAUGH however at all the truly creepy things that are deep in the UV. For some reason, it's so "creepy" it's FUNNY.

  • Oh shizz. Just saw the 1970 thing. Ignore the previous comment.

  • Did this theory exist before Emily was created? All the videos on the uncanny valley talk about her. Or is it just that Emily sparked public interest?

  • Lars and the Real Girl

  • I didn't notice/feel it with the Polar Express, although I know a lot of people do. But that thing at 0:38 was the creepiest thing ever...

  • The pausing then the music is just friggin' amazing

  • I actually loved The Polar Express

  • @GoblinXXX --> This is, for sure, a better explanation of the uncanny valley than the fear-of-death hypothesis. Nevertheless I'm tempted to point out, that the controversy as to whether we are hardwired to see faces or not is far from resolved. We may be hard-wired to pay more attention to social environment or top-heavy patterns and the experience will do the rest - we will specialize in processing faces. Just like birdwatchers specialize in bird recognition.

  • Reminds me of that youtube video of how they kept a severed dog's head alive.

  • i think this is amazing..not weird..wtf is wrong with people..put creepy music behind anything and of course itll be creepy.

  • down very down lays .... Japanese Crazy Dog waiting to rape youre children

  • "Eh? Eh?"

  • Throughout this video, I thought "Oh, that's not too uncann--OH MY GOD! KILL IT WITH FIRE"

  • The end is the scariest part. I have to go to sleep now too... D:

  • Comment removed

  • @GameBuilder15 well, me too. But if I dream, I think I would just @#%* her.

  • Very interesting phenomenon.

  • I'm scared.

  • NIGHTMARE FUEL

    NIGHTMARE FUEL EVERYWHERE!

  • I dunno what this uncanny valley is all about, I like robots in pretty much any form. They're all fascinating. I'm just as scared of a big raging bear as I would be a militaristic looking robot.

  • 1:05 - 1:12 I got a boner from that robot.

Maybe for the voice. I'm not joking.

  • Not scared

  • @deyan777 It's not about being scarred, it's basic bodily function.

  • When there isn't many human like features in a robot, we focus on those few and we like it.

When there are many human like features, we focus on the exceptions and we get freaked out.

That's my basic understanding of uncanny valley, anyway.

  • I cracked up at :38 ... omfg ahhahahah

  • what's the one at 1:06? that one was actually pretty fucking cool

  • @ishouldplayzelda no thats scary oh god oh god OH FUCKING GOD!

  • I feel fantastic

  • the recent movie "mars needs moms" fell into the uncanny valley and as a result the movie bombed in the box office. Kids who went to go see mars needs moms felt uncomfortable and creeped out during the movie because of the facial animations, so no one wanted to bring their kids to see it.

  • What is that robot's name at 1:12 ?

  • 0:37 Ahh. Don't worry. That's just Britney Spears...

  • @vastspace91 thats what i thought XD

  • Humans are hard wired to see faces, even when they aren't there. We see Jesus on tortillas. And we are thus hard wired to know a FAKE facial expression, and why most of these androids aren't so bad until they give one of those horrible SMILES. We'll anthropomorphize a robot that acts human in our heads, without it having to look at all human-- WALL-E and Johnny 5 are great examples of this, so stop wasting silicone on fake skin and make me a robot who can do my damn laundry.

  • @GoblinXXX Have you read the research Mori published about the uncanny valley in 1970? What you've said about the disparity between a real person's expressions and a humanoid robot's expressions is basically what his research was trying to prove. You should look into it, it's really quite an interesting paper.

  • @52hello25 I haven't read the paper, but I've read ABOUT it, and the conclusions-- I knew it was Japanese research, which is why it amazes me that the JAPANESE persist in creating these horrible, blank-eyed monstrosities. My guess is that their ultimate goal are sex robots, having recently created the artificial vagina to go in them. They should really look to the artwork of Hajime Sorayama and forget fake skin, and work on ways to keep chrome polished! ;)

  • @GoblinXXX I agree with you about sex robots being the goal - I'm guessing RealDolls aren't real enough for them. Although I understand where they are going with their thought processes, I can't understand WHY they are thinking/doing this at all. What is the point of having robot sex when you can have real, human sex? Have people become so greedy and antisocial that they'd rather have sex with something they can abuse and throw away, rather than an actual, feeling person? Can someone explain?

  • @52hello25 Frankly, I think RealDolls are for necrophiles too lazy to dig up an actual corpse, but in answer to your (probably rhetorical) question, I'd point out that the same culture invented virtual pets and robot puppies, too.

  • @GoblinXXX

Unless your autistic, then it makes no difference.

  • @TotallyGeekage

    Do your research.

  • @MrOpenGamer

Why do research? I am autistic. Autistic people can't read emotions on peoples faces, so it's hard to tell the difference between a fake smile or a genuine smile. Thus, the uncanny valley doesn't really make autistic people feel uncomfortable and if it does, then it's not until the very very bottom of the valley.

  • It's funny that a Japanese scientist came up with this theory, since the Japanese are the ones that DON'T SEEM TO GET IT, and keep inventing all these damn creepy ass replicants.

  • It was interesting to note my physical reaction to each clip. I got a weird feeling in my stomach when we started going lower into the valley. Instinct is interesting.

  • HELLO DAAAAAVE

  • Holy Shit, the music at the end of the video (starts at 2:22) seems so familiar, any ideas where it is from?

  • @HoctorDouse It's the theme from Halloween.

  • Comment removed

  • @HoctorDouse Halloween series, michael myer's theme song.

  • @HoctorDouse Halloween.

  • What about Avatar? did that perfected mocap?

  • @Johnlindsey289

In avatar, the people are blue. If they were flesh colored I think I would be creeped out.

  • The uncanny valley isn't necessarily a bad thing. The whole concept of horror movies and especially zombies depends on it.

  • O_o

  • ...and they have a plan.

  • In robotics we are currently in the uncanny valley, it will just be a few more years until we are there.

  • lol @ ending :D

  • What's the robot at 1:09?

  • I actually think all of these are amazing.

  • whats the one with angelina jolie?

  • @TheAsianOptimist its from beowulf. they animated her but it looks amazingly real. it seems like half-real and halff-animated but im not sure.

  • 1:13 KILL IT WITH FIRE!!

  • The uncanny valley is a hypothesis that has never been proven or disproven. It is an appealing concept but there is nothing supporting it.

Personally I don't find any of these machines particularly scary, they are simply bad attempts at realism: If they were people, they would be ugly, so we find them ugly - there is no "theory" needed as to why that is, it's obvious.

Play video games like Heavy Rain or Crysis 2, the characters there are very realistic, yet not creepy at all.

  • @SuckItLily

We actually had a lecture about this in my 3D modeling class for the video games program. L.A. NOIRE was an example, but it was noted that it isn't quite as creepy as these robots since video games have yet to reach a point of realism where it's disturbing quite yet, Crysis 2 included. They aren't anatomically correct, though the texturing is very detailed, I find some of the mouthing they do somewhat unnatural. They didn't reach the perfect realism at the end of the chart.

  • The same reason people fear these robots is actually the same reason why people fear cripples and retarded.

  • remember Terrahawk? that puppet dolls creep me out..

  • The first statement is false. He did not say that it's "creepy" when they look and act "too much" like humans, but rather when they ALMOST do, a.k.a. not quite there, thus falling in this in-between gap which is the uncanny valley...

    Fix this shit, it's misinformative.

  • wtf

  • 0.:38 - 0:45 is too far in that valley...

  • @mjgc8755 i agree lol

  • @mjgc8755 Its one of the scarier things i've ever seen...

  • This is why puppet Aliens look so much more creepy than CG aliens.

  • @StAnger220 The animatronic aliens (let's just pretend we don't care about the fantasy of them being real things) are actually more true to life in terms of visuality and movement... which in turn makes you go "shit that's real."

  • I love robots. I can't wait until they are a regular part of life. However I prefer androids which are humanoid but are not indistinguishable from humans. When you can't tell a robot from a human I think "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Terminator". However I can see from the Asian androids that such robots are coming soon.

  • I dont get it.

  • 0:58 yay so cool :D

  • 0:58 yay so cool :D

  • Read The Sandman (not the graphic novel), then Freud's article about the Uncanny Valley. That'll set ya straight.

  • Comment removed

  • Aww, it would be nice if humanity would never manage to pass the uncanny valley....

  • 1:13

dont look at me, dont you DARE FUCKING LOOK AT ME OR I WILL BURN YOU ALI-

oh shit, he looked at me!

    AAAAHHHHHHH

  • It doesn't seem right in our human brains, because we're so intricately programmed to regonize the most subtle of facial expressions. Robotics can't yet replicate the speed and presicion of human expression, so looking at something that apears human yet has that "dead eye" look about it makes us feel uncomfortable. Human body language expresses itself all the way down to the diameter of our pupils, something you'd be hard pressed to replicate.

  • I still can't tell if that woman answering the interview questions was/is a real person or not. :'O

  • I'm apparently not affected by the Uncanny Valley Affect. (In fact, sometimes the opposite happens.) The more realistic a robot is, the more I like it. The only time I experience this sort of uncanny valley is when I see myself in a mirror or a picture. Sometimes I see myself as more of a crude imitation of a human, not a real person. Of course, most of the time this doesn't happen, and my reflection doesn't creep me out.

  • @LWillRuleTheWorld Ok my reflection used to creep me out too, but I experimented with my looks until I found one that "reflected" my real self. I am affected by the Uncanny Valley though... When everything becomes the same, how do you tell apart what is real and what is not?

  • The head of the japanese girl robot next to a glass of water was the most creepy imo. Because is looked almost like a living head chopped off.

  • Things are weird when they look different than how we expect them to look.

That's all there is to it. People are throwing around the 'uncanny valley' as if it's some secret and mysterious realm.

You'll get the same effect looking at a human missing a limb, or is mentally and physically handicapped, or just anyone who is different from expectations. Even if someone has a different skin color than you, though obviously most robots are further removed from your expectations than these examples.

  • the end was creepy as fuck

  • A'la CGI Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy.

  • Polar Express? UNCANNY? What is wrong with you guys? Not uncanny at all! I am easily able to distinguish that dude from a real human. Not creepy at all.

  • 1:13 I was like FFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

  • I never got the Uncanny Valley while watching the Polar Express.

  • @CupboardNinja well everyone has a different opinon

some of the stuff in there didn't give me that vibe either

  • For me, tis the baby looking robots that scare me the most.

  • THIS! This is why i enjoy cartoons so much... why when i play world of warcraft or other video games i NEVER have or will ask for (more realistic) stuff in my games... i dont WANT the creepy fuckin uncanny valley lol

  • Robert Zemeckis, that is all.

  • Madre de dios! :D

  • We find them creepy because the facial animations are not close to perfect yet and they're really unexpected looking. If you look at things that are motion captured such as LA Noir (the new video game) and compare them to games which don't use it but still look realistic such as Mass Effect 2, the difference is clear.

  • i think we find them creepy cuz they look so human that we expect human qualities from them. so when they let us down, we shun them. They also do not die, so thats why they evoke fears of mortality. you can never get the eyes right. there the gateway to the soul. the eyes are never right.....

  • The woman talking near the end looks like a robot herself.

  • @RCBChurch She's actually CG. Here's the rest of that video: /watch?v=bLiX5d3rC6o

  • This has always been quite interesting to me. i always wonder how we subconsciously dip into the uncanny valley.

  • @Jsh3281 Yeah like, I wonder what the exact point is where we start to realize something's "wrong." The scariest things to me are things that can be perceived as normal but your instinct tells you it's not.

  • DAMN!

  • They should exploit the uncanny valley for a horror movie. How creepy would it be if one of these realistic human but not quite human robotic or CGI humanoids were going around murdering real people?

  • @jhhwild dude... you may be on to something... but I have a feeling its been done before. If not, you should claim rights ASAP

  • @jhhwild if it was all done well, id go see that.

  • This wouldn't be a problem if we'd just stop trying to make robots look human.

  • Maybe if they could close their mouths, they'd looked less creepy...

Also: Go Keepon! Woo! Dance your li'l heart out.

  • they're scary because they look like reanimated corpses.

  • emilly is still the best cg ive ever seen

  • could someone tell me the name of the third robot on Mori's graph?? I'd like to research about it. Thank youu,

  • ... eh eh.

  • At the bottom of the valley lies something so creepy that you have to like it. It's like disturbing things in the middle of non-horror games. Giygas, although overstated, is like that to me. >:)

  • The last still image was funny. Epic music.

  • 1:47 CGI

  • Wait, that chick at 1:46 wasn't a robot, was she?

BTW where can I find the robot at 1:07 ?

  • @BarfFromSpaceballs She was an very high quality model, like the ones you see in lastest videogames cutscenes.

  • Sorry, but the image metrics clip should be representative of the bottom of the valley, certainly not at a spot almost at the top on the other side. It's close to coming back up, and maybe as far as starting the climb, but it's down there pretty far as to most eyes it's not that obviously CG, but there an obvious creepy aspect about it. Polar express belongs on the stylized side of the valley, pretty far up as it is still obviously CG, but also very pleasing to the eye.

  • ImageMetrics?

CaptiveMotion is a much higher quality animation studio for high fidelity facial motion capture

  • "A robot stuck inside the uncanny valley is no longer being judged by the standards of a robot doing a passable job at pretending to be human, but is instead being judged by the standards of a human doing a terrible job at acting like a normal person."

  • @Flup2 Haha, yeah, I love that line from Wikipedia.

  • @Flup2 This is the right answer.

What was all that bullshit about being afraid of dying? What the hell does that have to do with robots?

  • @egdeltur666 A crazy robot revolt?

  • @Flup2 who said that? that's brilliant

  • oh hey, mass effect soundtrack! :D

  • Getting out of the valley is just a matter of solving problems until you're out (which is why trying has, so far, sucked up as much money as anyone's been willing to put into it). The consistent problem with all the speaking Japanese robots shown here is that their mouths don't more anything like correctly for the speech sounds, which is why they look so much worse than, for instance, the characters in the Final Fantasy movie.

  • 1:16 LOL

    Eh eh

  • KILL IT!KILL IT WITH FIRE! NOW~THEY ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD YIAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

  • What's the robot at 1:14?

    It's AWESOME!

    EH EH.

  • They look like moving corpses.

  • the Michael Myers theme song adds to the creepyness =]

  • 0:46 (insert Britney Spears joke here)

  • The new standard in sex dolls

  • :42 is my ringtone, I thought my phone was ringing, haha.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!!! Now with the movie AVATAR, i learned a lot, of how the did it, to ge out of the uncanny valley.

  • Great vid, and idea for a series/channel. But I wanted it to be longer!

  • god that's creepy.

  • The new roller skating babies animation is getting pretty close to the good side of the valley. Even as perfect as it is, surprises me just how many people get creeped out by it.

  • @ameridat That's the point: it falls into Uncanny Valley for so many people, including me. Of course watching it a million times I may get used to it... But the point is the first 999,999 times I see it, with my unavoidable Uncanny Valley reaction.

  • Comment removed

  • CGI doesn't irk me at all, really, but when I see those robots that have just a slight something wrong with them, the "yuck" comes in to play. When I see or hear that something is slightly off in movement or animation for example, it seems so wrong. Stop motion animation, if it's shot at enough frames per minute to look almost right, can be super freaky, because there's still that little something wrong. Anyone ever seen the video for the Rain (Supa Dupa Fly), by Missy Elliot? It's like that.

  • We will never be able to create a truly human like robot. The reason why most "humanoid" robots look like theyre dead is simple because they are not alive. We should stop focusing on give them skin and muscles and rather spend the time money and effort on developing better artificial intelligence instead of making them look like mentally retarded cockroaches.

  • @p99fanatic That's so true! Physical appearance and features (it's not just seeing it, it is also feeling it, touching it, sensing its movement etc.) will always have a very high risk to fall into the Uncanny Valley.

  • I think I'm gonna have nightmares tonight............

  • I cant wait to fuck an android!

  • i tell you im gonner have nightmares about that baby for a long time to come...that is simply too creepy

  • 1:08 that's actually kinda cute... it's not as disturbing as the baby, that's for sure.

  • :39 scared the sh*t out of me.

  • I think at some point our subconscious stops seeing "human simulation" and starts seeing "diseased human." At that point our instincts to get away from the plague carrier / crazy person kick in.

  • What's the name of the clip at 1:09.

  • @Xaxton2 I'd like to know, too. It's kind of cute and I haven't seen it before.

  • @Xaxton2 Okay, I found it. It's a Nexi MDS robot.

  • Can't just stop when it's starting to get interesting!!

  • I too learned about this on NPR and now I understand why that dancing baby screensaver that was so popular in the early 90's so creped me out! I hated that baby but was fascinated by it too. Machines can be cute but robots that look too human, to me, seem like animated corpses. I haven't seen anything that I've found frightening yet but there is definitely a yuck factor.

  • @Khdre i fucking hate that baby!

  • I always noticed this effect but never had a term to frame it in. Then I heard about the "Uncanny Valley" on NPR today and said ah-ha!

To a lesser degree, I think the uncanny valley theory applies to CG animation as a whole, not just w/anthropomorphism. Ive always felt a visceral "yucky" feeling whenever Ive seen cg movies b/c the physics aren't quite right. I 1st noticed it in the 80s as a kid when cg animation started to appear. Only when cg is deliberately cartoonish is the effect mitigated.

  • None of the examples here really freaked me out honestly. It just doesn't really get to me if it's puppets/robots or CGI.

Stop-motion claymation however? FUCK that. God damn, that part at the end of Evil Dead 1 gave me nightmares.

  • Same here

I tend to find popular conceptions of space aliens very frightening, which I guess is how other people feel about the uncanny valley, and if these particular images disturbed me at all it's 'cause they were Japanese

  • So do the aliens that scare you have to be humanoid? Or is it scarier if they're total starfish aliens and don't look anything like us?

  • Yeah, humanoids. The cliché kind with spindly bodies and huge eyes. I don't believe the Earth is being visited by extraterrestrials but idk this kind of image really gives me the creeps.

  • rofl

  • This is rather interesting... I'll have to do more research on the uncanny valley.
