  • If I was Goodson, I would've been there that day and Ira would've been out of his MG job.

  • 3:00 from Richard HAS to be on purpose

  • The judge needs to go to "judge school.

  • I believe there was another Gaff by judge Ira over somethin match with clean are wash in a Game on show....I may be wrong but i believe was another miss

  • Comment removed

  • The general rule, as I understood it, is that you can't match a general "school" with a specific, "Finishing School" and "Night School". They should NOT have accepted "Scuba Diving School". "College" on the other hand, being a general answer in itself, is an acceptable answer. The judges fouled up. I'm glad to hear they invited him back for another shot.

  • Charles was onto something with "Scuba diving school," if you recall the cultured pearls in the question.

  • If I'm not mistaken, they invited the guy back on a later show, and admitted that it was a gaf not giving him credit for the three other points eh should have had

  • I think the judge did that on purpose just to see how everyone reacts to that.

    Because it was damn funny.

    Best moment ever.

  • Debralee is HOT

  • FIX!

  • Note how Richard points out "school" with his middle finger. 3:00

  • @AnnacondaVice LOL!!!! I caught that!!!! That was funny! I don't blame him though, that wasn't a fair call

  • He should have gotten all six matches!

  • I'm sure Charles LIKED him!

  • 2:21 What does S-C-H-O-O-L spell? lol and a HUGE LOL at

    4:25 Richard: School! I CAN'T believe THAT!

  • lol

  • Gene Rayburn was cool, but he never seemed to support the contestants very much. He took the "corporate" viewpoint more often when it came to matching.

  • @maynardsmoreland: That's the purpose of a host; to uphold the rules.

  • remember Hairy vs Harry on Password

    and Marcia Wallace.

Must have been the same judges!

  • Come to think of it, how do the answers given relate to the mention of cultured pearls in the question? I guess "scuba diving school" (or "lessons") is the best answer.

  • Expert, no expert, favoritism...who cares. This was hilarious. No game show like it!!!

  • How does college match but not school when the guy said school

  • Match Game was notorious for being one of the most fixed shows since the late-50's scandals. This shouldn't surprise anyone.

  • @Gnillob802 just curious do you have any proof to back up this statement?

  • @Kinoakim Yes. I watched a lot of TV game shows back in the day. That makes me an expert. And this show did this type of thing ALL the time. That's my analysis. Live with it.....or die!

  • @Gnillob802 thanks so you actually have no proof. :)

  • @Kinoakim So if listening from an expert isn't considered proof, then no one can give you proof except making something up to match your opinion. How sad for you.

  • @Gnillob802 I am sorry but just because you watched a lot of game shows does not make you an expert. A lot of people can claim such a thing. Proof would be quotes from people in the industry or old articles that talked about the show being fixed. If Match Game was so notorious for being "fixed" I am sure there would be something out there talking about this. This has nothing to do with opinion. It's either true or it's not.

  • @Kinoakim You're wrong. I am an expert. And Match Game was fixed. That's why they had to change the way they judged answers half way through its run.

  • @Gnillob802 What are you talking about?

  • @hallpriest9 Sometimes the answers had to be exact & sometimes they could be very broad. This caused some contestants to protest that the judges would require more exact answers from contestants they deemed less attractive as a contestant & were offered to appear again on the PM version or another of the producer's shows. Eventually Match Game became more broad as far as excepting answers. Short answer for limited space.

  • @Gnillob802 Agree. I remember reading about Match Game favoring certain contestants and the producers making sure certain contestants would get certain questions based on if they were male or female, young or old, etc. Since there were no right answers it was a situation where one could expect most answers to be the same and how they were judged seem to vary. I think they were trying to make the game more entertaining not necessarily favoring a particular contestant. But it was unfair.

  • All six answers should have matched. This was not the prototypical MG situation of not allowing a general-to-specific. The key element here is that the celebs were just trying to color their answers up to be clever...I mean seriously, did Charles really think the contestant was going to say "scuba diving school?" The judge was just dead wrong here.

  • The judging was really FUBAR on this show, wasn't it?

  • sometimes the judge could be a real douche bag

  • I love it when Richard Dawson 4:16 basically flips the bird by refusing to take his card down.

  • I think the judge accepted Charles' answer "scuba diving school" and not "finishing school" or "night school" because the word "School" was boxed on the card indicating it was the real answer and "scuba diving" was an added joke. The real error was appearing to be biased when the judge accepted the first finishing school answer and then reversed it.

  • Two things about this whole incident:

    1) After the show was taped the contestant was given $10,000 after threatening legal action claiming the show was fixed. Not the nicest way to do it but he won out in the end. Just thought I'd share that with anyone pissed about this vid ^^"

    2) 3:00.... classic Richard XD

  • Holy crap O.O

thank u for sharing that nifty info^^

  • @PsychoB32 yeah i caught that the first time around i was like no u didnt give them the bird!!!

  • This was unfair. Nobody said the contestant had to be specific! They should have given him all of the points, just because of that inconsistancy.

  • The fix was in XD

  • They accepted College...they even accepted scuba diving school...but they would not take finishing or night school??? I call bullshit!

  • big time bull shit

  • @GreenDeathFlavor Well, the reason for accepting "College" could stem from the use of "school" to sometimes mean "college".

  • Actually, there was ONE judge on "Match Game" - producer Ira Skutch, and this was probably the BIGGEST mistake during his time on the show!

  • Notice that they still counted Charles's SCUBA DIVING School answer. The judges were not consistent.

  • frickin judges

  • "I think you gotta take the 'College' from 'em as well, then we'll REALLY have a riot!"

  • Well, since it was the 70's, the judge might have been high when this was taped. I mean seriously, he accepts college and scuba diving school, but not finishing school? It has school in the title, what more do you need for a match?

  • It was nice to see this clip in its entirety as opposed to bits and pieces that was shown on a game show special a few years back. This was classic, and Match Game is FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!

    Thank you!!!

  • What's funny about that too was that the contestant's triangle was lit up after Debralee gave her answer and stayed lit until Richard gave the same answer and then it was taken back. When Patty was denied with "Night School", thats when the audience should have forcibly removed the judge from the studio.

  • The 700th Level has arrived at "Match Game '7x."

  • So what happened? Did they eventually give him all 6? All the answers were schools. That was not fair at all.

  • In the immortal words of Vicki Lawrence, "the judge is an asshole..."

    Judge = EPIC fail...

  • Yes, Richard is giving them the finger.

  • "First victim of school riot. Man with shirt inside out. Found on school steps"

  • "No general to specific rule" maybe, but anyone that watches Match Game knows that Brett's answers sometimes got really crazy and long and would still match.

The judge was being a prick here.

  • This contestant was ripped off.

School is school...no matter what type of school it is

  • I'm with Richard and the other 2! They should have given it to him!!!

  • I love how Richard gives the finger at 3:02,

  • @stargate121 Very subtle when doing so, don't you think? No one else caught it apparently.

  • well, heres my two cents:

he said SCHOOL which can apply to ANY variety of school, which can serve as function to ANY typre of school: college, scuba, night, or finishing.

and i dont get how he was too specific.

if they allowed scuba diving school, they SHOULD allow finishing.

(frankly, i thought charles's answer was the better on and made more sense. its VERY original)

  • They all should of counted. The panel were trying to be funny with their specific types of schools. that is their job.

  • Unfortunately, not they should not have. The rule was used multiple times throughout the series. No general to specific matches - so CNR's answer should have been disallowed as well, despite the stress on the term itself. College is a synonym of school, and is therefore acceptable. Rough, but it is consistent.

  • That's the problem. College is a specific term too, it does not mean any school.

On these game shows, the cast would tape 3 shows then break for dinner and get smashed, Then go back and tape the Thursday and Friday shows

  • Plus MG PM

  • What was the final decision.

  • Yeah, really. They don't give the conclusion. From what I read, Dawson walked off the show because of this incident.

  • They asked him back a few weeks later. He lost that time too.

  • As I recall this was the BIGGEST bone of contention between the judges, the panelists and the contests-trying to match a general answer with one that wasmore specific.

  • S C H O O L spells College?

  • no but they are the same things

  • The dude playing said SCHOOL! NOT COLLEGE, Okay I'll contend that college is like School but every answer with the word SCHOOL SHOULD'VE been accepted!

  • agreed.

  • HERE`S my summary on it he (the contestant) said school, school could mean any type of school doesn`t matter thus he should of got all 6. Maybe the judge should go to judge school LOL

  • All the school awnsers where GOOD the judge was a prick, the girl before richard was MATCHED then richard was not but BOTH said the same thing.

  • All of the 'school' answers should've been allowed! March Game is classic. Thx!

  • That should say "Match"

  • What the hell was that judge smoking?

  • When Debra gave her answer everyone heard the ding but not the buzzer afterwards.

Love how Richard gave the judge the bird by doing it sideways!

Should have been 6 out 6!

  • I saw it, but I don't think he was doing it intentionally.

Though it'd be funny if he was.

  • Love this show

Richard, Bret, Charles = CLASSIC TV

  • According to Webster's Dictionary, "finishing school

    Function: noun

    Date: 1832

: a private school for girls that emphasizes cultural studies and prepares students especially for social activities" He should have got all 6. Night school is classes at night.

  • Haha I love how Richard gives the finger at 3:00

  • Sweet :) I don't think he did that deliberately, some people point with the middle finger. Nice job noticing

  • <3richard dawson!

btw this was added on my birthday! hooray :D

  • mine too

  • I think the judge just wanted one word for the blank. He accepted scuba diving school b/c Charles put a box around the word.

  • guy got robbed. Hopefully it didn't affect the result of the game.

  • Match Game is more than just a game show. That's truth.

  • The judge probably did it that way because Charles added on Scuba as a joke while thinking of the answer school. Thusly the reason school is boxed in. Where as the other three were meant to be a bit more specific. But yes that DEFINATELY should have been 6/6.

  • I think it's because in the question Dumb Dora send her Cultured Pearls... Pearls are found in the ocean so SCUBA Diving School, follows the question, but they should of also counted the other three becasuse they said "School".

  • The judge buzzed Charles and then called it a match. They matched Debra Lee then buzzed it but no one heard it.

I do believe Richard is flipping off the judge if you notice how he switches fingers.

The judge should have also matched Patti's answer too. Should have gotten all 6 out of 6.

I think the judge was on something that day.

  • Richard Dawson's got your back.

  • Richard was flipping him off!! Flipping off the Judge when he wouldn't take his answer! look at 2:58 to 3:02!

  • I loved it when gene said shut up and i loved it when patti was so afraid but her answer should have been taking but charles shoulded have been but i don't know what finishing school is

  • What an amazing clip. That show was completely out of control and insane and amazing. I really like Richard Dawson. He seemed like he would get seriously angry at the judge when he thought something was unfair. He also made the best point--how can college be better than school? It is insane that they matched Charles's. However, in one of these other clips, the judge explains the rule that you can't match a general with a specific. The celebs should have all just said school.

  • Charles's sailor shirt is incredibly gay. :)

  • WTF?! How could they accept SCUBA Diving school, but not finishing school or night school? That's favoritism towards Charles Nelson Reilly...

  • Gene: Patti will you show us your answer?

    Patti: I'm afraid!

LOL, this is probably the funniest thing ever. Debralee and Richard made me laugh so hard, as did Charles. LOVE THEM ALL!!!!

  • Doug! Doug! Doug! Doug! Doug! Doug! Doug! Doug! Doug! Doug! ;D This is fun... Doug! Doug! Doug! Dou.....

  • So did they ever give him the points for the answers? He should have gotten a match for all of the stars. Heck...at least NIGHT School should have answered. That's not near as specific as FINISHING school. But I still say they should have all matched since "Scuba Diving School" was given the match...

  • Seems to me the last four answers all contained the word school. So he should have ended up with 4 correct. (Buzzing the college answers). Interestingly, the next contestant answered lady of the night and was matched with "party girl"...

  • He should have matched all 6. This was in 78 and one of the reasons Richard left the show not too long afterwards and with them having the star wheel too plus he was I think tired of the show too. They reversed buzzing Charles answer and then made it a match they should have done the same with Richard, Debra Lee and Patti's answer too. The judge did not a vacation like Gene said earlier.

  • Did Richard start hosting "Family Feud" after that?

  • Family Feud started in '76 two years before he left Match Game

  • Was the contestant brought back because of this?

  • I think Richard was getting genuinely pissed off at the judge there. It certainly seemed like it.

  • HOW DUMB IS SHE!?!?!

  • The judges were VERY unfair

  • I think the problem resulted from the judge allowing such a general answer from the contestant. The question should have been "sent to BLANK school" instead of "sent to BLANK". If the contestant said something really general such as "someplace" then just about every response would have matched. It was a bad question.

  • I love how the player was waving his hands to get the audience to start booing (around 3:41, 3:49, 4:33). I just LOLed there.

And then Patti saying "I'm afraid" (to show her answer)...

Seriously-- you can't write this stuff.

  • Finishing school is the same thing as college, and scuba diving + night school are both types of school. School is very general so every varient should be there.

  • Richard is flipping off the judge at 2:59. Whether it was intentional or not, it fit the situation. It's obvious that they said "scuba diving" "finishing" and "night" just to be silly, not to be specific.

  • Don't know what the judge was thinking. The bottom three all had school. I wonder if this is what caused Richard to leave the show. This was in 78 the same year he left. I also like how he switches fingers from the 1st to the middle "bad" finger. It looks like he is flipping off the judge with a sideways bad finger. Hee hee.

  • Actually, Richard left Match Game to pursue hosting Family Feud full-time. Good catch with the middle finger, though. It definetely looks deliberate...and the censors missed it.

  • "First victim of the Match Game School Riot" LOL!

And to my knowledge, the contestant involved was brought back to compensate for this question.

  • To see how inconsistent the judging was, do a youtube search on match game fairy

In that clip, the contestant says fairy and that is judged to be a match for strange

  • college and school are synonymous, so the first two were correct as the judge found, scuba diving school fit the implied them of the question about PEARLS, the night school was too specific and not related to the question. Finishing was specific and not related to pearls. What the judge did was probably the best decision.

  • also, the one specific school answer by Charles.. he put a rectangle to specify school. What is strange is that he did put a rectangle around it. He didn't have a habit of doing that.

  • It was warranted. They said various forms of school, and yet, they marked a lot of those answers as wrong. That player should have swept the board.

  • But, playing devil's advocate - "cultured" would be misunderstood by Dumb Dora, so would send them to a finishing school. That's a school for debutants. It teaches young ladies to be cultured. Ergo, finishing school fits, too.

But, it doesn't matter...30 years later, and we still debate it. How surreal is that?

  • The other factor that Ira forgot is that some of the panel use the play on words in the question, considering if you listen to the clip that Gene emphasized "Cultured pearls" hence Finishing School, Scuba Diving school, College which are play on words and fits his answer for Dumb Dora.

  • I would have liked to known what happened during that commercial break.

  • there was no need for patti to show her answer, (if she was afraid then i think we all had a feeling as to what she said.:)

  • "QUIET!" LOL!

  • I wish we had more gameshows like this. They should consider revitalizing the Match Game, maybe put people like Regis Philbin, Bob Saget, all I can think of right now.

  • @captpan6 with all the rules and regulations and PC police a show like Match Game wouldn't work these days...it would be way too watered down.

  • Classic hilarity on Match Game! The famous (or infamous) Match Game 77 School Riot!

  • These guys are great, thanks for sharing so many great moments and memories.

  • WoW. I'm with Richard when he said he couldn't believe it! If they allowed Scuba diving school, they should of allowed any kind of school. finishing school, night school, dance school, art school, charm school, the list could go on forever!! either the judges were idiots, or they really didnt want that guy to win!!

  • they allowed one "school" answer, why didn't they allow the other 4? So how is scuba diving school like college??? which is what?????????? If the judges wanted to be picky, then they should have demanded a precise answer

  • If the judge gave him Scuba Diving School he should have gave him both finishing and night school as well. Either that or take away the colleges.

  • newman20072008 (1 week ago)

its a DAMM school it could be f***ing school its aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa (schoooooooooooool)

Keep the language clean here folks.

  • i missed the old game schools..the new one's are more improved but somewhat not as interesting as teh old ones.

  • now that i've stopped rolling on the floor in laughter and nearly peed my pants i can say...."holy mistake batman!" Ira blew that call big time! all stars (in my opinion) matched the poor contestant. All those answers were "school" in one form or another!

  • Did anyone notice when Richard Dawson was reveling his answers to the judges, he was giving them the bird (flippin em off??)

    So hillarious!

  • You're right. I wonder if that's on purpose. My pastor points with his middle finger. My dad does, too.

  • I luve this one too, the lower teir should have gotten the matches. Ole Principal Ira Skucth didn't care. Gene, Brett, and Charles RIP along with Debralee. :(

  • This is the greatest injustice in the history of the world.

  • I Love this show. Never would you ever see anything this funny. God bless them all. Gene, Brett, Charles. Ed Asner was great.

  • Gene, Brett, Charles, and Debaralee RIP :(

  • I can NEVER get tired of watching this show over and over. Never seen this one. He should have got ALL 6!

  • Finishing School, "match".

    Finishing School, "not a match".

    Say what?

  • I love this clip! Charles and Brett were sooo awesome! I love the last 30 seconds or so. This video made my day!

  • For those who don't know, I have found out that one of the panelists in this, Brett Somers, has passed away just recently. She was 83. RIP, Brett.

  • That damned Ira Skutch, he could haven given the lower teirs answers to Craig or either took it ALL away and did another question. And Prinipal Rayburn didn't make it no better! (I can tell he was trying to rush a tad bit.)

  • I think the guy should have gotten all 6 matches. How the judge could decide "college" is the same as "school" but "school" is not, is beyond me.

  • Folks remember people mess up he was allowed on show later in season it happens

  • Wild clip! And that guy should've gotten 6 for 6!

  • love the glasses.

  • the judge had a 'bad day'.

  • Hey! Teacher, leave those kids alone!

  • Deboralee Scott! rip

  • That guy should have been 6 for 6!

  • I envy Richard. Those girls on the second row were HOT!!!!!!

  • And I envy the girls... RICHARD is HOT!!! :P

  • One of the most wildest reactions to wrong answers. Loved it!

  • The only Match Game regulars that are still alive are Brett and Richard. Charles has died.

  • Yes, the news of Charles just came out. So sad.

  • Dont forget Betty White, she was an original.

  • I was talking about the regulars (Gene, Richard before he left to host Family Feud, Brett, and Charles). Betty wasn't a regular, but she showed up a lot of times.

  • Betty was a semi-regular, along with the late Debralee Scott and Patti Deutsch on this clip.

  • Not anymore. Now that Brett is gone (God rest her soul!), Richard is the only one alive!

  • Sadly, Brett passed away in Sept. of 2007 - only Richard is now left.

  • TV Guide and TV Land ranked this particular episode among its Top 100 Unexpected TV Moments, at #82. (Just got back from Wikipedia to verify that for ya.)

  • I'm amazed at how they accepted some but rejected others which weren't really all that different. How weird. Anyway, I had loved the show as a kid but forgotten how it worked. I think it was pretty tough!

  • after that, I would have invited that guy back.

  • The judge on the show was a complete idiot and total moron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think college was an appropriate answer but scuba diving school was too specific and should have been rejected, but had the word school in it and was a type of school. Finishing and Night school should have also been accepted. I've never seen a judge on a game show screw up that bad

  • ok, that was a bad day at the office. College should have NOT been a match.

  • It's a type of school. The judge was being too anal about it.

  • They should have at least brought him back for another chance. That would have been the fair thing to do.
