  • If we in the US truly believes in our foundational belief that, "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," I believe we should ask ourself a question: do we truly believe that these rights also belong to mothers, fathers, sons and daughters of different countries as well?

    If so, we have an obligation--or else we shall deservingly be called the biggest hypocrites of our time

  • Fix the world, ok! Save people, NO! Because people cause the problems of the world and there are too much people on the planet: 7 bil. they'll ruin the planet, so I wouldn't mind if some 2 billion left our planet

  • @raisinsunn Yes, and the best way currently known to decrease birth rates is to eradicate extreme poverty. There is a strong and well established correlation between poverty and birth rate. As people's standard of living rises the amount of children they have decreases. This is why 200 years ago the average Westerner was having 7+ children whereas today it is less than 2. And this is why if we eradicate extreme poverty today the world birth rate will drop significantly.

  • @Guaguanco11 I'm not sure about that theory. First it's illogical. When you're poor, don't have a job, no incomes, you don't have babies because you won't be able to sustain them.

    For instance, I'm Armenian, Armenia is a poor country, yet the population decreases.

    Back in the days 6milion Armos in Armenia, nowdays barely 2.5mil.

    There are other factors like culture, religion..

  • @raisinsunn It is not a theory but a fact. I suggest you go read the academic literature on this. But then, perhaps you are one of those people who decides what you want to be true and then tries to make the evidence fit it.

    I think it has more to do with culture. You may other arguments, I didn't see em.

  • @raisinsunn Nice quote. Ive worked in several cultures dealing with this and have learned most of the factors as to why birth rates soar in some places. In most places, those in poverty have more children because more children die early due to early childhood diseases. The fear of losing all their children is something (understandably) they cant live with.People can ask well why have kids (or more kids) if they are at risk of premature death. These people have nothing else, family is everything.

  • Most poor countries won't turn around until their governments adopt both economic and political reforms that will allow their people and countries to prosper. Sachs is causing these poor countries to become over dependent on rich nations.

  • The US is unable to save itself financially. Forget organizing that sort of care package. That's what happens when you have a country full of Willy Lomans.
