hyper threading was a very smart yet simple idea. all they did was put an extra set of decoding and fetching units on each core and while the core is not being used by one decode/fetch unit it is used by the other unit. in reality the actual processing components of a cpu are only used about 30% so we could actually have a single or dual core with multiple(say 4) fetch/decode units per core and just have the core actually running instead of using precious power and just sit there.
