I think the best part was @ 1:20. the choir goes ham-burger! Best Gospel song on the planet. It makes my hair stand on end! You feel them from even over 50 years ago.
When I first heard this in the movie Secretariat, I knew it was the best version, even though I had never heard another. Superb song, superb singers. Whoever thought of to putting it to the winning race was inspired!
Why is this movie preview, which has absolutely nothing to do with gospel music, part of this video? What's next? A slasher movie preview, or a pornography preview before a gospel video? Youtube should do better than this. 60otaku3, I don't know how these things are decided, but maybe if you protested, youtube would have more appropriate previews for your video.
But unfortunately I who do not have the copyright of this song do not have a right to do protest to change a current movie preview into different advertising against YouTube team....
@60otaku3 Actually, You should be thankful :) I didn't know who sang it until the movie, so now I am Going to buy it on iTunes because of the movie :)
Thanks for posting this. Thanks also for the clarity & volume.
I also arrived at this clip via Secretariat, which would have been greatly diminished if not for the inclusion of this version of an inspiring piece of choral worship music.
Conversely, Secretariat, Sister Act & other movies enhance the appreciation of this faith based tune as well as bring it to the attention of many who may not have heard of it.
Great song of inspiration. I remember listening to it on AM radio when it came out in 1969. hadn't heard it in years until now. Thankyou for posting it. God Bless!
This version of "Oh Happy Day" by The Edwin Hawkins Singers from 1969 has always left me speechless--and that certainly isn't easy. Based upon the number of visits here, it would seem that many people have never heard the outstanding and amazing rendition.
Today, I had unsuccessful interview where the interviewers really underrated my knowledge and education. But, listening to this song, especially the chorus is healing me and brightening my day!
I'm not religious AT ALL, but this is incredibly uplifting. I love it. Just an amazing, fantastic sound from those singers. Makes you happy to be alive.
@SachomSings - Yes this version sounds the most "live" and "realistic," as though I am in a church myself, listening to it. "Oh Happy Day" has been covered countless times, and this version is still my favorite by far. (Although Glenn Campbell did a pretty good rendition.) When I hear it, my problems dissolve. Many thanks to 60otaku3 for posting this gift. :)
Dorothy Combs Morrison - Lead Vocal Edwin Hawkins - Choir Director, Arranger, Piano Betty Watson - Co-Director, Soprano Choir Members - Walter Hawkins, Tramaine Hawkins, Elaine Kelly, Margarette Branch, Rueben Franklin, Donald Cashmere, Ruth Lyons and 40 others. Drums, bass and percussion - unconfirmed Produced by La Mont Bench. Recorded live 1967, Ephesian Church of God in Christ, Berkeley, California.
If I owned an AM radio station, I would program the pop song greatest hits and rarities of the 40s/50s/60s. This Edwin Hawkins song would definitely be in that rotation!
This choir is so powerfully blended-you almost feel as if you can hear each individual voice yet is a seamless whole. The soloists are so wonderful....Perfect...I have loved this song since it first was heard on the radio in the 60's.
LOVE this song!!! I haven't heard it in years and for some reason, it just popped into my head today. If any song can uplift my spirit, this would be IT!!!
the whole point of the Christian Crusifixion is the atonement of mans sin by the shedding of Gods or the son of Gods blood. That is the Christian path to salvation is that you must accept that God sacrificed himself or his innocent son for reconciliation of Mans sin. This is a wholly pagan concept and not what ANY of the prophets taught. Its absurd!
Great music, reminds me of my mom before she passed. She used to sing songs of this magnitude when she washed dishes and cooked food for my family. As a matter of fact, she was a great singer!!!!!.
I am not a religious person, but I believe in God, and this song has tears streaming down my face. Saw Secretariat last night and loved the scene with this song. This song is almost overwhelming!
When they used this song and recording in the movie Secretariat, I cried. I can't stop hearing this, the best Gospel song recording ever, in my head. Reminds me of a different time when their was REAL hope. Anyone who is not affected by this song in some positive way is in denial. This is perfection. You don't have to be a believer in a God to be uplifted by this song, it just gives you some kind of uplifting hope. That young choir on this recording sounded beautiful.
@prophetchannel Spent some time with a Christian that cares more about people of any faith or persuasion than pontificating and judging, and you'll find this faith got more than just the music right. ;) The later type of Christian brings shame to our faith, and is not the way Christ intended us to be, IMO.
@MistyK74525 I got your back on that, I can dig it, as a man from a 1960's childhood.
Soldiers are coming home from a once again too long war, just like then and we need to step it up with univeral understanding and compassion. this song is the signaure song, stand on it and use it, no religion needed. But does not hurt to have faith either....
This is one of the purest, greatest recordings ever made. They did it in a Berkeley, california church on a reel-to-reel tape recorder in 1967, sold it out of their car trunks for two years before it was picked up by a major label. Sometimes the live moment matters, way more than the manufactured over-produced crap they push on us these days.
@russianhiller i remember as a kid they played it on the pop rock and country stations .. its one of those songs you know instantly what it is from the heavy bass and piano at the beginning
It certainly was! I was about 12 yrs old at the time, skinny white kid who had never heard black gospel music before. If they hadnt have played it on top 40 radio stations, I wouldn't have known about it. Wonderful wonderful song. Still gets me up on my feet, clapping with tears streaming down my face. Helps me to break thru anything that is troubling me. Happy Day, Jesus arose from the Dead!! He IS the son of God.
@mrcanadiantech you are mistaken my friend. this song was released by the Edwin Hawkins Singers in the year of our LORD 1969. the song has been done by many people. but edwin released it in 1969.
My dad used to put on this record on as one he'd listen to to test out speakers and audio stuff. Hairs on the back of your neck stand up. ...................Possibly the most heavenly thing ever to come out of Oakland and delight the rest of the world. Wish I had been there to hear it live.
I ain't much of a church goer either but you don't have to in order to understand that this music is so spiritual and helps heal us in every way! i find peace of mind when i hear this song!! and great music is great music!
i love this song:P you want to know why: i live in holland and after school were always going to the coffeeshop to smoke some weed, and the name of that coffeeshop is: HAPPY DAYS
I like your polite way of deleting comments. I've never seen such attentiveness around these parts before. Thanks for the upload, I find this version most pleasing.

My wife and I just purchased the movie Secretariat on DVD and were watching it last night. This song came on at the conclusion of the movie. It is such an uplifting song and was a great finishing song to the movie. I was just listening to it again here. Thank you for having posted it here. It too brings a certain peace, reassurance and serenity when you listen to it!
This song brings me back to 1971, riding along 125th Street in my dad's station wagon with this on the radio, looking out the window at early Sunday morning sunlight hitting the masonry of brownstone stoops on the north side of the Street, watching people in their Sunday best walking to church.
Anyone from Atlanta ? ......Remember when Mike Roberts in the morning on V -103 used to play this every Friday moring! This woke me up for school! Thank you Mike Roberts for introducing me to great gospel!
Try to imagine that everyone in the world committed to this song....not only in words but believing in the lord Jesus Christ.....and what a real revival it would be..
Watch and pray. He's coming very, very, very soon! If you dont know Him, ask Jesus into your heart and ask forgivness of your sins. Live for Him and be ready. Oh happy day when Jesus washed my sins away!
We love this song and it was perfect for the movie Secretaire. What a great story. And it remind us how Uncle Sam has become so powerful. GET RID OFF THE DAMN DEATH TAX!
This song just makes me want to just start singing as loud as I can; dance, clap my hands and just feel the power of the music [for me is the language of the soul]. What I believe to be so powerful about it is that it affects so many people of all different religions and beliefs with the same feeling that there is something greater then ourselves; it unites us all for 5 powerful minutes - -which, is a really good start!
"Ode to Joy" sung by Miquel Rios is also very powerful in the same way.
This is one of those songs that transcends the lyrics sung. They could be humming this song and it would still be bad-ass. Music is just that good, it doesn't need you to follow a faith, just shake your ass from time to time!
I simply got blown away at the age of 12 when I heard this song for the very first time, whilst living in the South of England. And still today this song just knocks me of my feet!!
Originally written in the 18th century Edwin Hawkins has the definitive version of this song recorded in 1969 and won Best Soul Gospel Performance Grammy 1970. It is the only Gospel song to crossover and become a Pop hit causing an uproar in the church community who tried to get secular radio to stop playing it despite the message just because they didn't like the funky rhythm. Dorothy Morrison was the lead singer here and it still sounds great in 2011 well done Mr. Hawkins. God is love
When I was a little girl, my grandmother would sing this song all the time. Thanks for sharing. :)

I used to sing this walking home from school when I was a kid. This song always brings a smile to my face.

Que maravillosa canción, The Edwin Hawkins Singers la mejor versión para mi.
A mis 15 años la escuchaba un y otra vez y siempre sentia una gran emoción, ahora a mis 56 sigo sintiendo lo mismo. Gracias.

Hawkins. God is love
