I think a reason West Virginians have such an entrenched pride in their identity is that their state is sort of a country all to itself. Its not acepted by the southern states as one of their own nor by the northern states and certainly its not a midwestern state, as Ohio across the river claims to be. Its kind of like the rejected child without a family who grew up rugged and independent.

To me, this song is not only about West Virginia, but the idea that "home" is a state of mind that brings an endless euphoria. When I heard John Denver died in a plane crash I was very deeply saddened. So much talent, great singing voice, songwriter, pooof all gone. He has a right to enjoy what he likes to do and its to fly. I wonder if he took a parachute with him of those scenarios when planes will crash. Or take precaution to fly high enough to bail out. But he went into a tail spin and they can't even identify his dental records cause his face is all smashed.
