my wifes family all come from west virginia, myself, i'm a brooklyn boy but when i'm in WV,my thinking is "THANK GOD I'M A COUNTRY BOY" GOD BLESS WEST VIRGINIA...
Politics and religion have their merits to people but when you remove them from the party, it's amazing what people worldwide find in common and much has been progressed with a little music. Catchy tune and brilliant song. Thanks for posting and sharing this gem.
Such GORGEOUS photos! One of my all time favority songs. John has been close to my heart since 1973 when I was a young girl in High School. My first TRUE love introduced me to his music.
I will be leaving Western PA which is so like WV for Florida's Space Coast. I will be leaving mountains of oaks, ash and maple for the palms of the south. Let me say its a hard thing to do when Country Roads is all one knows. Wish the Western PA country bumbkin luck the next time you hear this song as she will keep it close and dear to her heart.
I'm reminded of how much I miss the country while listening to this song. The city will never be my home. Hopefully one day...one day....I can go home.
I think a reason West Virginians have such an entrenched pride in their identity is that their state is sort of a country all to itself. Its not acepted by the southern states as one of their own nor by the northern states and certainly its not a midwestern state, as Ohio across the river claims to be. Its kind of like the rejected child without a family who grew up rugged and independent.
Thank you for this, I also have made a slide show depicting the beauty of or great state. I wrote and recorded the song that accompanies it. Please check it out.... "A Breath Of Mountain Air" (Come Home To West Virginia). I welcome your comments!
I really feel an affinity for this because I grew up constantly visiting my cousins in Cumberland, MD, that tiny neck of MD across the Potomac from WV (actually, they originally lived in WV when I was VERY little, I vaguely remember it).
Great Video. One regret is that I always wanted to see him in concert. Always been a fan....his life was just cut too short. Wonder what other places he could written and sung about.
@IVA86zz We do have some beautiful places in America. But the people are what matter, some places are welcoming, others not so...Probably the same as any country.
There's a reason they call this place Heaven. My mother was born here, well all of her family was before coming to Chicago. It is the most beautiful and calming place I've ever known in my life. I think it is possible to miss a place you've never seen. This place is in everyone's heart and soul. You always long for it
@pelvicserendipity For all we know your mom was born in New Jersey. A "calming" place? Could that just be the vodka and Zanex you've been popping? As for the state of West Virginia, after my band did an excellent cover of this song (check our new "Country Roads" video), I started reading up on the place. Apparently the water smells like tuna fish and everyone who lives there eats soup loudly.
@number1covers haha your an idiot...... With your lack luster grammar, and 3 sentence fragments in a single paragraph(how anyone could do that is beyond me) I doubt Very seriously you can read.
I'm glad, the last thing WVA needs is people like you. You spelled xanax wrong. Why am I not surprised
I am surprised that you can actually read! Instead of reading about WVA why don't you just go there have a long cool drink of water then drown in some soup
@franticcrusty Spelling is not important. Art is important. Why does my band rank so high (#1)? The answer is we work harder than everybody else. That, plus we have more raw talent than all the other bands.
@IVA86zz America, truly has some amazinglyly beautiful places. The place I long for is Ireland. I have never been to my homeland, so I understand exactly how you feel. :)
@IVA86zz Yes. But that is perhaps because the music, lyrics, or imagery either contained therein or in the video, evoke preconceived notions in our minds of what those places might be like, and it touches a part of your being that longs for a certain quality apparent in the imagined genus loci of those places. This happens to many people who are not happy. On the other hand, perhaps you have been to those places in either an out-of-body experience type dream, or past life.
I never appreciated this song until I got accepted to WVU. I'll be there next fall. I'm finally proud to be a West Virginian, take me home, country roads.
reminds me of gatlinburg tennesse in the seventies the smokie mountains were the best until commercialism took them over . the mountains are still gorgeous
love this song with a passion....we play it every week on the last day our campers are at camp and everyone ends up crying at the end because you will never know if you will ever see any of your friends from camp again like i said love this song and it will never get old
I was born at Arlington, Virginia.. I stayed for only 6 months of my age.. my parents took me back to Malaysia.. It's so sad hearing this song.. hoping one day I can come back to my birth place..
Love this song. It make me remeber my trip to a cruising when I was with my mom, step dad and the rest of the family. That cruising changed my life. I was listening to this song while we were crusiing. My mom was so happy. I have not seen my ma so happy for years. First time i got drunk :), and had a awesome time with friends and girls. Im so exited for next year.
To me, this song is not only about West Virginia, but the idea that "home" is a state of mind that brings an endless euphoria. This song is beautiful and brings tears to my eye; while my pop pop was going through chemo, I made him a John Denver mix cd. This song always stayed in my head and I have grown to love John Denver's music myself. Take me to the place that I belong ;)
this is my favorite song i grew up in huntington before moving to pa and i spent every summer with my grandma my family now lives in sc and i live in ca grandma went to heaven last saturday dec10 2011 we drove back to wv for her funeral where she now is with grandpa i havent been there in almost twenty years god bless my grandma she was ninty-five my whole life god bless her im sure john denver is singing this song in heaven god bless you agnes barker love amy
Love this song and the beautiful background voice from one of the girls (Taffy?). Been through West Virginia once with an 18 wheeler. That mountain momma was a real workout on fast, clutchless down/up shifts. Great, Great song!
I love this song I remember when I got stuck in Tenn, and when my dad finally picked me up i had to hear this song cuz all i wanted to do was go home and see the familar country roads
Every West Virginian must love this place especially those of us that no longer live there. We all miss the wonder of WV and this song allows us a visit in our minds.
When I heard John Denver died in a plane crash I was very deeply saddened. So much talent, great singing voice, songwriter, pooof all gone. He has a right to enjoy what he likes to do and its to fly. I wonder if he took a parachute with him of those scenarios when planes will crash. Or take precaution to fly high enough to bail out. But he went into a tail spin and they can't even identify his dental records cause his face is all smashed.
@kelliebooboo13 i know what you mean, i served in iraq for 2 years, whit the danish forces, i knew a american soldier i became good freinds whit, 2 months before he should have returned home he died on a patroll, this was played when he was sent home , it was hee,s fav song, and one of my old fav songs aswell, rest in peace my freind, enjoy your life freinds, stay safe,
im glad to be a West Virginian this song is the best song by John Denver its the only song that I've ever heard thats about the great state of West Virginia
Just watched the Office were Andy and Dwight were playing this song to impress the new girl in the office :P And then Toby came and interrupted them -.- I just had to listen to the whole thing :D <3
@LFH317537 I'm from Columbus Ohio, my parents grew up in wv, and I met my husband, and he's from wv. i've always wanted to live here, :) i miss my parents though. I love this song though.
My brother's boyfriend serves in the Canadian Forces... He is like family to my family, and we miss him very much! I break down when I hear this song. Come home safely Craig :)
I love this song!! It reminds me when I had to hitchhike home from the city through country roads every weekend to get home. I would sing or hum this song as I walked and hoped to get a ride.
@oddgrin Sounds suspicious. For all we know you dreamt all that up in a drug induced comma passed out behind a dumpster. You were hoping to get a ride? Probably to turn tricks to support your habit. Yeah, you were humming alright.
Quit playing this farce and check out my band's new "Country Roads" video. It'll help you remember what really went down.
I think you meant "coma" not "comma". You punctuate sentences with a comma.
Darn, I wish I had a better story to tell. Turning tricks to support a habit sounds a lot more romantic than hitchhiking to get home because you don't paid enough to afford a bus ticket.
@oddcringe You didn't have enough money for a bus ticket because you couldn't get a job after you got kicked out of college. You wanted to teach English Literature but your freshman year you got caught smoking pot. You were blowing the smoke out the window but your RA heard the bong water bubbling when you took a hit. He turned you over to the campus police and you got a write up. This came back to haunt you when you were put on academic suspension. Two strikes and they kicked you out.
@oddrinse After your less than stellar attempt at higher education, you decided to steal a car and drive to Reno to deal black jack. Somewhere in Kansas your fan belt broke. While waiting on repairs you met a girl who said she was a nun. But she took all your money when you weren't looking and headed out to L.A. to get a boob job. Since you were stuck, you got a job washing dishes and spent all your money on vodka and pain killers. That's when things really started to spiral out of control.
Damn! I forgot that part of my life. Now i remember. She was from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. I should have realized that something was wrong because I noticed she was wearing fishnet stockings, garters and crotchless panties.
@oddsinge You were arrested when you got high & broke into a shoe store. You were found the next morning passed out with a live squid in your shirt. At the jail you began to have difficulty breathing. They took you to the emergency room but there was a mistake in the paperwork & you were given a new kidney. A few months later at court ordered mehab, you met a crack dealer with Tourette's named Tram. His trailer got cold in the winter but you guys kept warm by cursing & gnawing on the furniture.
The song reminds me of my father, rest in peace dad. :/

I love this song!! It reminds me when I had to hitchhike home from the city through country roads every weekend to get home. I would sing or hum this song as I walked and hoped to get a ride.
odinrc 2 months ago
@oddgrin Sounds suspicious. For all we know you dreamt all that up in a drug induced comma passed out behind a dumpster. You were hoping to get a ride? Probably to turn tricks to support your habit. Yeah, you were humming alright.
Quit playing this farce and check out my band's new "Country Roads" video. It'll help you remember what really went down.

@number1covers
I think you meant "coma" not "comma". You punctuate sentences with a comma.
Darn, I wish I had a better story to tell. Turning tricks to support a habit sounds a lot more romantic than hitchhiking to get home because you don't paid enough to afford a bus ticket.
odinrc 2 months ago
@oddcringe You didn't have enough money for a bus ticket because you couldn't get a job after you got kicked out of college. You wanted to teach English Literature but your freshman year you got caught smoking pot. You were blowing the smoke out the window but your RA heard the bong water bubbling when you took a hit. He turned you over to the campus police and you got a write up. This came back to haunt you when you were put on academic suspension. Two strikes and they kicked you out.

@lonelywan
I love this. You guys make my college life more interesting than I remember. I'll use your recollections from now on.
1) I turned tricks by the dumpster to support a habit.
2) I got kicked our of college for smoking pot.
3) I studied English Literature.
4) I was on academic suspension and after two strikes I was booted out.
Now all I have to do sew the main points into an interesting narrative. It makes for much better dinner table stories than the ones I tell.
Thanks.

I should have realized that something was wrong because I noticed she was wearing fishnet stockings, garters and crotchless panties.
odinrc 2 months ago
@oddsinge You were arrested when you got high & broke into a shoe store. You were found the next morning passed out with a live squid in your shirt. At the jail you began to have difficulty breathing. They took you to the emergency room but there was a mistake in the paperwork & you were given a new kidney. A few months later at court ordered mehab, you met a crack dealer with Tourette's named Tram. His trailer got cold in the winter but you guys kept warm by cursing & gnawing on the furniture.

One of the greatest - if simplest - tunes ever. All hail John Denver, may he spend his afterlife jamming with the greats who went before him.
Some of those pictures are quite spectacular. Are they your own?
