I love this entire album. This and "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" were turning points in her musical style - less folk and traditional writing forms, more jazz and developing her unique style of playing, both on guitar and the piano.
4:08 ... that verse is was perfect for that moment of the Conspiracy Of Hope Tour; "in the church they light the CANDLE's... there's your HOPE!!!... there's you're hopelessness I've seen it all these years..."
Joni really throw it back at their faces, the audience and possibly the organizers by pointing out who've they placed hope in - each so "deep" and superficial. There's you're hope... that audience... at least thats how interpret it.
It seems as though she isn't quite finding the 'recipe' with Pastorius' replacement here. HER performance is, as always, very heartfelt... but the bass antics don't feel comfortable with her edgy vibe on THIS show. Undoubtedly one of the GREAT songs of our times...I'd say...
Yes, yes yes! I think she was apprehensive of the crowd, but she did her thing nonetheless. There was an edge of anger in this performance. It was wonderful! You go, Joni!
One of Joni's best songs. Just don't ask me which is my favorite. I couldn't answer that because I love them all. NOBODY matches her artistry, creativity or heart and mind for reaching your soul--the DEEPEST part of your soul. Isn't that what we call genius?
i remember her with her husband(bass) at some televised charity benefit from this period in england really disappointed with the rude rowdy loud ignorant (of her music) young crowd. "OI! NEVER MOIND THE JAZZY FOLKSY BULLOCKS! WHERE S THE FUKKIN CLASH?!" hard moment for a bloody genius. glad they were listening somewhat here. well, maybe not , she looks really pissed off here too. "DUDE! WHEN'S SPRINGSTEEN COMIN ON! WHO S THIS CHICK?"

Pity so many today are forced to listen to what goes for "music", in equal breath "talent".
How denied and wholly ignorant sheeple they are. Then again, look who is "president" of the (once) United States of America. The lying, fraudulent Marxist Kenyan megalomania................ Says so much.
Be glad Mitchell - amongst others - is at least viscerally known by you.
@equinoxranch Are you slightly bad-tempered, or were you when you wrote this ? A "fraudulent Marxist Kenyan magalomania" ???? Please, learn what these words actually mean before using them, because you appear to be a little stupid, to think in such a way. Don't be like that, buy yourself a dictionary, think, do something, because you cannot love Joni M. and be an idiot, that's a total contradiction. Bisou, baby.

@andreaprodan I know you hear it instantly. But christ how do you fill Jaco's shoes?
Brilliant musician, whacked on heroin, and a dude who doesn't strum his guitar but paints a masterpiece on the fretboard of his guitar. RIP JP.

Great rendition! Way over the heads of her audience, but that takes nothing away from Joni.
