  • Guys, lots of laptos have this problem, something just got stuck into the fan, or the fa is slightly out of place. Once your warranty runs out (or even before if Apple refuses to fix it), open the macbook and clean the fans!

  • My 13' mid 2010 model was making the same noise!

  • Apple: We make sure our stuff breaks fast and still looks pretty.

  • simply open it and clean it....freaking easy...takes 5min

  • you used smcFanControl????????

  • that sounds more like the hard drive, not the fan

  • Yup I had to same problem. You have a defective fan. It took 6 Weeks till they shipped me a new one =.="

  • same problem here.. ARGG!!!

  • If you ever have fan noise make sure you are not running processes you don't need. I had an issue where BBedit would run the processor at full speed, causing the fans to run, but it's software and not hardware.

  • RESET THE PRAM

Turn the computer off, locate the command+option+P+R keys

when you turn the computer on, press these four keys simultaneously before the grey screen appears.

Hold these keys down till the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound again.

    VOILA

  • hey dude you should get that fixed, because on everybody's here no one has that problem.

  • Go To Aple They will fix it if you had it for less then a year or have a warnti

  • ughh.. i had this exact problem with my unibody macbook then i shot compressed air into the vents and now i'm afraid my fans dont work at all. -____-"

  • same problem with my 13 inch can anybody help?!

  • I'm having this exact same problem with a regular 13" MacBook. It's barely 9 months old...

  • if ugot a cd in there the cd could be off balance happended to me

  • i noticed that my MBP 13 in gets kind of loud when i'm playing video specially on youtube and the webhost plugin make the cpu to really work and gets hot therefore the fans get loud, anyine is getting the same problem? is it a problem?

  • My 13" MBP isn't even a month old and the fans are getting louder... I don't like it, but I don't want to be without my computer for two weeks so I'll wait until a bigger problem develops. Hopefully Apple have noticed this problem and have bought some better fans...

  • The problem with the 13" is that we only have 1 fan in the unit... I've noticed that the computer gets extremely hot and the fans go wild when it's charging and being used.

  • Arhh samee :(

  • Oh and to warn you in advance... Avoid Windows on bootcamp, You'll end up with a fan that barely spins and A VERY hot computer. Xp is that way at least.

  • i have my MBP fans set to 3200rpm and i cant hear a thing...

  • same here. no prob at all

  • If you're trying to stress the mac just use the comand "yes" on the terminal, a couple of those should do the work...it to much hazzle if you do the video converting and such

  • i had this same problem. the apple store told me they fixed it, but they didnt. so i took it back and replicated the problem by converting a bunch of videos and unzipping a bunch of files at once while my macbook was in a sleep to try to get the fans roaring. they could barely hear it, but it was noticeable.

its just a bad fan, they will get it fixed for you in a week.

  • the same problem here :'(

  • I'm having the same problem. I got a program called smcFanControll and it can control fan speed. I've tried it with mine and it works pretty well I just run my fans faster since mine gets really noisy around 3000 rpms. Just find the range and take it in. I know I will.

  • FUCKING SAME PROBLEM :(

  • @RationalTheism you used smcFanControl?????????

  • ooooo. well all of the unibodies are still in warranty because they only came out 2 months ago.... GO TO THE APPLE STORE AND SEND IT AWAY TO APPLE.... they will fix it even if you dont have apple care because it comes with a 3 month warranty

  • Already tried that. They denied doing anything about it, due to the fact I couldn't replicate the problem in-store.

  • correction. it comes with a year long warranty..

  • o.o

    good call

its 90 days of phone support that i was thinking of

  • I had the same problem with my 1st gen macbook when i received it back from apple for a logic board replacement. They must of replaced the fan as well because it would at random make the same grinding noise. I too was denied a replacement because it wouldn't replicate the noise at the store. But since mine was close to the end of warranty, arguing with apple accomplished nothing for me. If i were you, just hang out there w/ your machine on till it acts up!

  • Another shining example of how apple products "just work" xD

  • Well, it won't be repaired as the problem didn't replicate itself in store! So it's a mystery. I just hope it doesn't crop up again =[

  • Ah yeah, that sucks. Unfortunately mine is out of the 14 day return policy, so I've gotta suck it up and have it repaired :(

  • Ouch.... I had some problems with the new macbooks too. When I first powered my macbook 13.3 on, there was a green line running down the center of the display, that wouldn't go away. turns out it was a failure of the Nvidia inter graded graphics... exchanged it the next day for another new one.
