  • Excellent one

  • Thank you very much for posting these lectures.

  • i think the proff fails to portray the weberian concept of sociology. the neokantian roots of it, the key concept of rationality, the mutual orientation of meaning in social acts, hasty words on typology of authority - no mention of dominance & legitimization-

Hearing only about protestant ethic you get a misconception about weber. Well to be fair 45 min its 2 little 4 the above themes nevertheless i think he could do a better job. on making an intro lecture on weber.

  • I love how soft-spoken true intellectuals often are.

  • 40797 views and I just had some juice ...

  • THANK YOU for posting these lectures. This will really give me and advantage as this is now assumed knowledge in Social Science at UWS! Thank you kindly (",)

  • Many thanks for posting these fascinating lectures. I think it is a wonderful thing that an intelligent, educated person like yourself would make his lectures and knowledge directly and readily available in this way. Bravo!

  • There are no words to express my gratitude for this video. I really like Weber and the way he thinks, in opposition to Durkheim, which I don't really enjoy.

Will you or did you already talk about Goffman, Marx & Engels, Toqueville, Wright or Simmel?

I really like Toqueville and (sometimes) Goffman, but I didn't find reliable sources on them (to be exact, I don't know who to trust for an opinion on them). As for Marx, I would really like to hear your opinion on him.

  • Thanks for posting. Thorough informative introduction.

  • I thouroughly enjoyed your comprehensive presentation of Weber's thought. It is always interesting to compare the different approaches. I study at another university in England but am on an Erasmus exchange in France at the moment and I was actually working on my presentation on Weber when I discovered your video. I must thank you for a fresh perspective which was very welcome after days of reading Julien Freund's works on him. :) Andreea, second year student.

  • Excellent video. Thank you for the upload. Who do you refer to at the 3min mark? I can't quite make out the name.

  • @richieerror

Thanks. I refer to Ernest Gellner, about whom I would lecture in the following lecture. Alan

  • are there any videos on weber's probability theory?

  • Thanks for giving us access to your lectures. I wish I had a professor like you in college.

  • very useful thanks!

  • Max Weber is incredible. It's a shame the modern sociology syllabus, at least pre-university, has become so milked down.

  • GUYS, THIS IS A REAL GOOD LECTURER. HE SUMMARIZES THE REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF. that is worth a lot. thanks for posting.

  • overrated crap, see domination 4 part weber "wey-ber"

  • Whats wrong with pygamies?

  • my only criticism, lack of emotion. Hard to hear you wise man!

  • so as where weber belived that the evoltion of capitalism was "an accident" where as Marx on the other hand had a more determisic view on the rise of the capitalistic society; he saw it as part of the inherint logic of history.

  • I wish you were my professor - CUNY, Queens College

  • thank you very very much. This has helped me alot. You are lucky to have such a good teacher ;)

  • the head of EINsTEIN ??

    XD ! !

  • immense wisdom

  • mmmnnn.....as you are well read i wonder what your opinions are on todays politics.....i understand you may not wish your thoughts be made public...so i ask you this to think on in your own time......you seem to understand western history well enough to the point where it seems you are able to predict our political future....so.........where are we going....???

  • My only criticism would be that you don't have enough lectures on youtube!

  • I must say that having seen the previous six lectures and looking at various of his videos I can only feel gratetfull to have access to such variety of subjects however complex they might be and actually enjoy his way of putting things. Thanks Alan for getting this out for us! This is a fantastic job

  • Thank you - much appreciated. As you see, 'publish (on Youtube) and be damned', but the grateful comments more than make up for this. Alan

  • @ayabaya i really enjoyed this lecture and i was following ontill the part about things happening by accident.but is it possible that its not by accident but through a structure of social contract and general will.

excuse my ignorant but i will be greatfull if u can help explain that part

  • To all who criticize this prof. in some way: Try to lecture about so complex, insightful and ambitious work as is the one of Max Weber. Than I am able to listen to your arguments :)

  • thank you so much for sharing this!

  • I agree..My prf taught weber in such a lovely way...I still rememeber the whole lecture

  • At precisely 18:01, this lecture mysteriously transforms into an awkward rant against Tony Blair.

  • I think hes right abt the charismatic giving way to bureaucracy though...

  • I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH YOU

  • Lucid and interesting - thank you for sharing this.

  • Thank you so much! I wish I could have taken this class.

  • Thanks for uploading this superbly informative lecture on the brilliant Weber.

  • That is a terrible summary of the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

  • I'm sure youve invented your own ideas and embraced them as truth, I will stick to what Weber and Calvin had to say about the subject.

  • Can't you just make it easy on us and say that, in Weber's opinion, protestant ethics necessarily gave birth to modern capitalism through embracing the value of hard labor and dedication to be preceded by heavenly reward in the afterlife.

  • why do you want it easy?

  • learn how to spell, fool

  • Thank you very much for uploading this series of lectures!
