i think the proff fails to portray the weberian concept of sociology. the neokantian roots of it, the key concept of rationality, the mutual orientation of meaning in social acts, hasty words on typology of authority - no mention of dominance & legitimization-
Hearing only about protestant ethic you get a misconception about weber. Well to be fair 45 min its 2 little 4 the above themes nevertheless i think he could do a better job. on making an intro lecture on weber.
THANK YOU for posting these lectures. This will really give me and advantage as this is now assumed knowledge in Social Science at UWS! Thank you kindly (",)
Many thanks for posting these fascinating lectures. I think it is a wonderful thing that an intelligent, educated person like yourself would make his lectures and knowledge directly and readily available in this way. Bravo!
There are no words to express my gratitude for this video. I really like Weber and the way he thinks, in opposition to Durkheim, which I don't really enjoy.
Will you or did you already talk about Goffman, Marx & Engels, Toqueville, Wright or Simmel?
I really like Toqueville and (sometimes) Goffman, but I didn't find reliable sources on them (to be exact, I don't know who to trust for an opinion on them). As for Marx, I would really like to hear your opinion on him.
I thouroughly enjoyed your comprehensive presentation of Weber's thought. It is always interesting to compare the different approaches. I study at another university in England but am on an Erasmus exchange in France at the moment and I was actually working on my presentation on Weber when I discovered your video. I must thank you for a fresh perspective which was very welcome after days of reading Julien Freund's works on him. :) Andreea, second year student.
so as where weber belived that the evoltion of capitalism was "an accident" where as Marx on the other hand had a more determisic view on the rise of the capitalistic society; he saw it as part of the inherint logic of history.
That's what is being told in introductory classes. It is not the correct interpretation of the writings of Marx. A reading of the Grundrisse and chapter 15 of capital volume 1 would prove a deterministic reading of Marx wrong.

mmmnnn.....as you are well read i wonder what your opinions are on todays politics.....i understand you may not wish your thoughts be made public...so i ask you this to think on in your own time......you seem to understand western history well enough to the point where it seems you are able to predict our political future....so.........where are we going....???
I must say that having seen the previous six lectures and looking at various of his videos I can only feel gratetfull to have access to such variety of subjects however complex they might be and actually enjoy his way of putting things. Thanks Alan for getting this out for us! This is a fantastic job
@ayabaya i really enjoyed this lecture and i was following ontill the part about things happening by accident.but is it possible that its not by accident but through a structure of social contract and general will.
excuse my ignorant but i will be greatfull if u can help explain that part
To all who criticize this prof. in some way: Try to lecture about so complex, insightful and ambitious work as is the one of Max Weber. Than I am able to listen to your arguments :)

Read weber for yourself. Weber mantined that the "Protestant ethic" and its capitalist modality was the aceticism of the monastary being lived out in the world by the individual through the investment and reinvestment into ones own work as a demonstration of ones worship of Jesus and YAHWH along the fact that Christianity ultimatley always leads to freedom. Along with Weber read "A Life of John Calvin: A Study in the Shaping of Western Culture, " by Alister E. McGrath,
Can't you just make it easy on us and say that, in Weber's opinion, protestant ethics necessarily gave birth to modern capitalism through embracing the value of hard labor and dedication to be preceded by heavenly reward in the afterlife.

You lost me at your last lecture when you tried to blame the deeds of people like Pol Pot and Mao on Marx. That's like blaming the crusades on Jesus.

Max Weber is incredible. It's a shame the modern sociology syllabus, at least pre-university, has become so milked down.

That is a terrible summary of the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

I'm sure youve invented your own ideas and embraced them as truth, I will stick to what Weber and Calvin had to say about the subject.
