  • IMO,many of the traditions having to do with funerals are strange. For example, going through a red light to follow a funeral procession. The traffic is too awful around here to do that.

  • Its legal here in Nashville but only if you have a police escort.

  • i am scared of ghost*

  • Dont be scared, they cant hurt you.

  • No they can't, but they get blamed because they'll scare a person to where they freak and then end up hurting themselves. They are nothing to be afraid of, as hard as it is to not be...lol

  • I am Irish. I have just been to a Wake 3 days ago. My parents were Waked. This means...they are in the house for 3 days for us all to say our goodbyes....

  • No one does a wake better than the Irish, Im so sorry for your loss. Ideas about death rituals are fluid here in the US, Ive experienced just about everything except having the deceased actually in the home.

  • I followed POS here, and thought his commentary about Bulgarian funerals very informative. I know what you are talking about Daryl, although we didn't do it when I was growing up. Still, I was not kept from the subject of mortality in general, and I went to a lot of funerals when I was a kid. I think I was in better stead for it in the long run. That's me. I don't know. The next person might say the same thing.

  • Hey Betty! I suppose that everyone did it like the Bulgarians back in the day, it seems perfectly natural to me. All the pomp and circumstance is a bit much for me anyway.

I like to consider myself a semi-professional mourner (Ive been a pall bearer more times than I want to count) the actual ritual of it doesnt bother me anymore. My roommate has been to one funeral in her life, my fathers. I feel for her when she looses a parent, she has no idea what she is in for.

  • That was deep.

  • It was a weird day, thanks.

  • Hi Buddy I thnk with the subject of this vlog and not seeing the vlog beore i will be careful i what I say here, but about a year and a half ago I found myself in a situation and maybe I should vlog it ? and kind of like this story

    peace out POS

  • By all means, if you find any inspiriation to make a vlog from my videos please do!

  • Some people stop the clock in the room of the deceased at the time of their death.

  • I had forgotten about that, thanks.

  • man I missed alot didn't I?

roll in the floor? covered mirrors? we try to get them in the ground asap anymore around here, but i know that culture though.

so that wasn't the ghetto kroger was it now? :) do they wipe you butt as well? sorry I'm in a smartass mood today

  • Nope, it was the Kroger by Cheekwood and they would wipe my butt if I asked em too;-)

  • what is with the random kroger moment?

i've never heard those family stories. i guess its one of those things better left unsaid around here. i can honestly say the worst thing about someone dying in our family is my dad saying "its gonna be a lonnnng day". he is far too much like my grandpa lol

    -toMMy-

  • It was an inside joke! Last october, when all the youtubers came to town, I took some of them to Belle Meade to go to Cheekwood. As we drove past the Kroger I mentioned that it had valet parking. When I was there this past Saturday I saw chick with the cello and had to post it.

All that stuff, except Granny sitting up with Grandaddy, happened way before you were born. You mother did a pretty good job of making sure you guys were exempted from any of the family craziness.

  • lol she did a decent job. its still pretty crazy. i didnt konw granny did it with grandaddy. haha i still think the kroger scene is really random.

    -toMMy-

  • It IS really random, thats why I had to include it:-)

  • wow, valet parking at a krogers? what would someone need that for? oh and not sure if it was intentional on your part or not but the woman walking by with the shopping cart really bought the environment of a grocery store to life.lol

  • That Krogers is in the old money part of town, those bitches shop in floor length furs! They are used to getting out and letting someone else park the car. I was going to edit that out, but I thought it made the scene more real. You were the only one who noticed;-)

  • Oh and I wanted to tell ya that is the coolest Kroger I have ever seen to have live music!

  • Its in the old money part of town and they just opened a new Publix down the street. The manager is a smart man:-)

  • You are right he is a smart man!

  • The last true sitting up I went to was my grandfathers funeral and my grandmother had it at her home and he was there for 2 days before he was buried. I was very young but I thought it was a little different even as a child.

Now the locals around here have what they call the sitting up but it is just a viewing at the funeral home for a couple hours the night before they bury the person.

  • They searched for months till they found a funeral home that would let Mom sit up with Dad. I promised her I would do it one more time for her and thats it!

  • You really are a good son to follow your Mothers wishes. I don't think we need to do it anymore either because it only makes it much harder on the living that is already broken hearted. We all know there is no way they will bury you alive anymore because they embalm you so I am with you this tradition needs to be gone forever.

  • I think she did it partly for tradition and partly to tell him off! I heard some great one sided conversations when I was a kid sleeping in the funeral home.

  • Video response uploading.

  • I was hoping you would say that:-)

  • I've heard of that tradition of sitting up with the dead & also of having a bell inside the coffin. I don't remember it ever happening over here though.

These may be morbid vlogs, but they're interesting :)

  • Surely the tradition came from somewhere in Western Europe because thats where mothers family is from (Scottish, Irish and Dutch). Im glad you are enjoying my attempts at vlogging Andy, I feel like Im working without a net here =-)

  • I want to be roasted and sprinkled over my garden and then I want everyone to have a PARTY!!! I have been to far to many funerals and memorials, thats why I want the party. Besides, the party is for the people who are left behind.

  • I had forgotten about the guarding the spirit part, Ive heard that before. Having been a part of the ritual, I must say that its a bit cathartic for some. If my mother can work out some of her issues by talking to a dead person then Im all for it!

Morbidity is a big part of life, but I try to keep my channel a bit more upbeat. This is where I come to have fun ;-)

  • I think now they make sure you are gone. That woud be horrable waking up an you are buried.

Oh I am so not good with funerals. I think I have been to one that I remember.

  • I have been to hundreds of funerals, they seemed so normal to me until I got older.

  • weird never heard of that before!

  • Yep, it is weird!

  • i've never heard of sitting up with the dead. the only thing i can think of is some sort of eating event after the funeral service.

  • We eat at the drop of a hat! With my family food is never too far away! Tomorrow is my nephews fourth birthday and we are celebrating with about 30 people at a covered dish dinner.

  • I've never heard of the sitting up with the dead thing before. We have the funeral home viewing thing (depending on the person, this could be 1 to 3 days) then the funeral at the church, then the ceremony at the graveside.

In Quebec City if the funeral home is close enough to the graveyard, the family walks behind the hearse like a parade when the deceased is moved.

It is common for French Canadians to take photos of dead people in coffins, I find that creepy.

  • Moms family took pictures, I think its creepy too!

  • For our family it stopped when everyone was embalmed....No one can come back after that...But, yes, before that we "sat with the dead" in shifts...I think that is kind of having a resurgence because people are given more options...You don't have to have them embalmed...and there is always creamation...Which I plan to sit for...weird yes, I'm guessing part of your family is Scott or Irish as mine is....or maybe it's just a southern thing? Love ya, Ang

  • BTW...What's up with the Cellist in the grocery store? That is so amazingly cool!! Thanks, Grams

  • I drive past 3 Krogers to get to that one! Its only 10 or 12 miles from the house and they have better meat, veggies and fish for the same price as the other stores. Their staff is nicer and there is the valet parking and they have free food out for us to munch on too!

  • Holy crap! How cool is that?!! Wish we had something like that here! I'd absolutely drive a little further for all that fun stuff!! Thanks, Grams

  • It really is a great shopping experience Angela. I should call the corporate headquarters and give the manager an "attaboy".

  • I think it continued for our family out of tradition but now all the old timers are gone and none of the young folks have any interest. Everyone besides mom plans to be cremated, the cost of a traditional funeral is just a crazy waste of money! Moms side of the family is Scottish, Irish and Dutch but I think most Southern families did it at one time.

  • Thankfully I have not had to attend the funeral of a close family member, only cousins or aunts or uncles. So we have gone to the funeral and leave afterwards. Food is always served either at the hall or afterwards at a "party".

Oh so the snappy non-ghetto Kroger has a cellist too! Da-yum!

  • Oh we have food, and its usually the best kind! Prepared by little old ladies from the church and either fried or dripping with Velveeta:-)

Today was the first time I have ever seen her and I almost fell over myself getting the camera out and hiding it in the cart. I KNEW you would appreciate it!

  • hahaa Yeah I did!! I wondered how you had set up so you could catch her unawares ;)

  • I had my shopping bags in the baby seat and just nestled the camera amongst them. I got some looks from the deli guy but screw him! He wears a hairnet .

  • I don't really know. I've only one funeral that I remember but it was for my best friends father. My father died when I was 2 and I have no memory of him or the funeral. There have been others that I probably should have gone to but I just can't bring myself to. It's more like I refuse to acknowledge their death. I'd rather just think of them being away and I will run into them again someday.

  • My roommate has only ever been to one funeral also and it was my dads, thats just so alien to me. I think I can honestly say that I have been to a couple hundred funerals over my lifetime. I should be a professional mourner.

  • It's not a morbid subject, it's life. A sad part of life. Goodness Daryl, I've been to funerals where the deceased's life was celebrated with a fairly calm atmosphere and then I've been to some funerals where there was wailing and falling out in the floors and fingers being pried off coffins and well you know. You're from the south. Is that a southern thing? LOL I attend a pentacostal church so I've seen lots! Hugs!

  • The whole topic of death is a little more morbid than I want to be covering here, this is my fun place :-)

Melissa, I have been to some funerals that were doozies (thats the other possible video)! It is a Southern thing and dadgummit we are gonna do it up right!

  • The tradition stopped in my family when we stopped having the body actually in the home. I think that my dad was the last person that I remember being brought home for the viewing, and of course there were a lot of family members and friends who "sat up" with him. I don't really know of anybody who did that at a funeral home.

  • Here if the body is at the church all night, people still sit up. It's been a long time since I heard of a body being brought home. Hey there Lemonette! hehe

  • I dont remember ever having anyone at home, it was always at the funeral home. Mama is so set in her ways, they searched all over Nashville to find a place that would let her sit up when dad died. Thats one family tradition that will be gone when she is. It sure is nice to see you are still around, I hope the video fairy visits you soon :-)

  • Back in the day our family did the death watch as we called Daryl. It was last practiced when I was about 6 when my great grandmother passed. I do not find talking about death and death itself to be morbid or bad. It is simply the completion of the circle of life. We are all born with the knowledge that we will someday die. I have never understood why people find it so gross when it is the natural process in life. That doesnt mean its a happy time to lose loved ones but it isnt BAD. HUGS

  • We stopped doing it for the most part when my grandmother died in '86. My mom had to make special arrangements to be able to do it when my dad died. I will do it for her when she dies and then that tradition will go to the grave with her.

I dont think its all that morbid, but I like to keep my videos more on the fun side. This is how I relax and have fun:-)

  • this sounds very interesting.. a very interesting tradition.. something I had never heard of .. thx for sharing this

  • We dont do it anymore, thank goodness. It was normal to me until I got older and realised that I was the only one of my friends that had ever slept in a funeral home.

  • Oh...and how crazy is it that there is a musician in your grocery store!? Wow! :~)

  • Its crazy GOOD! I drive past 3 other Krogers to get to that one. They have better produce, seafood and meat at the same price as the others.

  • Interesting tradition. I have heard of it, but never known anyone's family that did it.

Do you mind if I put this in the magic cup as a SpookyUniversity topic?

    :~)

  • Sure, I will attach this as a response video.
