A friend of Josh Homme tried to make him love death metal, and upon hearing a dm band he jokingly called them the 'eagles of death metal'. Later he thought of the idea to write music that resembled 'the Eagles crossed with death metal', and that's how they got their name. Secondly, don't get so fucking worked up about a name of a band that takes themselves less seriously than you do. And yes, they are a rock band. Call it alt rock, hard rock, whatever, but they belong in the rock genre.
